response to cavelot

I moved to the Inland Empire (Riverside/San Bernardino) in 1982 from Lincoln. Wasn't a whole lot not to like. There was always something to do, big name concerts, two pro football teams, Lakers, Clippers, Kings, Hollywood Bowl, clubs on HW Blvd, Sunset and Melrose. And yes, it was possible to go to the beach in the morning and drive up and night-ski in the evening. People were almost as nice as the Midwest because a lot of us were in fact from the Midwest. I learned how to surf, sort of :) and became a very good snow skier. Waterskied a lot at Lake Havasu and Lake Mead. One thing was I missed the Nebraska seasons, especially fall.

Flash forward 36 years. Driving around had become really hard because the freeways were always clogged. Three times as many people as 1982, but only one new Freeway (210). So going to sporting events and other things was a lot less fun because it took two hours each way to get there. Everything got really expensive (gasoline, utilities, insurance). One good economic thing was property insurance could go up only very little as long as you continued to own a home. Homelessness was really getting bad, my wife hated men using women's rest rooms and stores were just starting to lock everything up due to legalized shoplifting. The streets, bridges, sidewalks were deteriorating in some areas and it started to feel real crowded all the time.

So we moved back to the Omaha Metro in January 2020 right before California was locked down for 18 months. I loved my time there, wouldn't have traded it for anything else, but it got too crazy there and I'm very happy I'm here.

And BTW, there are seasons here, which I love.
