Pretty cool of Riley to throw Armstrong under the bus.

What the heck does it really matter? It doesn't matter what a coach says after a loss like this-they get accused of "throwing the players under the bus" no matter what they say. I get so sick of this "coach X threw the players under the bus" stuff. I'd rather they be honest and really say what happened.

TA threw himself under the bus when he decided to throw the ball when a running play was called ...

All the bitching was about how a running play should have been been called on 3rd down and a running play was called on third down .. TA decided he didn't want to hurt his yards per carry average and threw it away

If it's the truth, then what's the problem. If you call a run and the QB throws it, there isn't a hell of a lot you can do about it. Everyone is complaining about "why didn't they run it" -- we'll they called a run and the supposed best QB in the west, threw it instead --- get it?

Simple hand off game over...save your breathe.

Secondly. .you're a garbage coach if you throw your kids under Bus for a game you mismanaged.
.What you don't understand is the game should have never come to that.

Should he have said the play was supposed to be a pass if in fact itwas supposed to be a run? Obviously Tommy thought he could check to a pass. Should we also blame Riley for 10-31 and 105 yards? Tmmy laid an egg, not the first time and surely not the last, but we are stuck with him for the next year and a half.

Agree completely...It should have been a simple hand off... Coaches got cute and it cost you guys the game as I see it and you never ever throw players under the bus... Throwing players under the bus could split the team and unity of your team. Then its a downward spiral IMO.. Dumb move of many dumb moves by your coach!

So

no. It was a run pass option, get it? You either kneel the ball and win, or hand off to a rb/Fb and win. There should never have even been the slightest temptation of a pass.

Woe to Rile
I think riley calls it how it is, if someone is under the bus, riley didn't put them there.
Woe to Riley if that is going to be the way we operate. People have been especially kind to Riley but if the standard is call it as you see it that will change and not to his benefit.

Sorry...I don't believe that play is not a run/pass option play. Our back goes out in the flat and looks for the ball. Now his intention was probably to have Tommy run the ball...he may have even said something to that effect. But that play is not a quarterback bootleg "run."

They ran up the gut twice and got stuffed. I don't mind trying to catch the D pinching in with a designed QB roll out but he should have been told clearly, if it blows up, fall down. There is no glory in picking up the first down if it requires a pass.

The running back, Ozigbo, said he was looking for a pass. "I thought it was going to be thrown."

It didn't matter if we got the first down, scored a TD, or took a 25 yd loss. The ONLY thing that mattered was keeping the clock running. Why in the funk would you do anything other than run the ball up the middle?

Saying like it is is not throwing anybody under the bus.
What is wrong with some of you?

I am more dissapointed by this board than the game.

F all of you who come out the woodwork like cockroaches when the lights go off.
This board is filled with cockroaches.

What he needs to do is sit his ass on the bench. POB can't get here soon enough.

Did some of you even watch the game? That 3rd down play looked like a pass play all the way. Even if it were a run/pass option, it was still a terrible call. There's no excuse for not running a simple run-only play. NONE!

There's no excuse for a junior quarterback to not be able to take simple instructions and follow them. Guess he's more about me than team.

How could anyone, under any circumstances, even entertain the idea of throwing a pass on that play? The lack of football IQ on that play is mind-boggling.

The play-calling all day was mind-boggling. How often did Nebraska chuck the ball 30 yards down field on 3rd and 3-4? Are there no 5 yard patterns in the play-book? Hell - run the God-forsaken screen play Riley loves. That thing is good for 3 yards every time. But NU was chucking the ball down deep down field all day. It worked one time, when Carter wrestled the ball away from a defender on one of TA's ducks.

People ask me all the time what I think of Riley. I was non-committal. Until today. I think he is in over his head. This team has played a lot of really lousy football the first 5 weeks. And they aren't done losing.

Dude could end up being Andrew Luck too. I can guarantee you he's miles better than Armstrong though. TA is not a quarterback...

I like your optimism...however TA has made leaps and bounds this year and actually is a huge reason we cane back against Miami...he made a bonehead play tonight, but I like his leadership and if anything he is a playmaker.

If you watch tape you will see guys running wide open in every game this year and we don't have a guy that can get them the ball. A real qb would be scary in this offense. TA isn't that guy.

Before todays game TA was 58% completion and a 140 something qbr (I believe it was the best or second best big ten qbs) he hasnt played bad at all...the Miami game we had a TON of drops.

The sad part is you and many others on this board actually think TA is a good qb.

I dont tgink hes a good qb i think hes a great athlete that is developing into a decent qb...one game he reverts back to his old mechanics IN BAD WEATHER and everyone is ready to torch him

TA will never be more than what you saw today. Servicable at best with lousy decision making skills late when it matters. This isn't "one game", he was never any good. He is a stat monster from all the screens he throws and weak opponents we play. 3 games into his "career" it was painfully obvious what he was, yet people hated TM so much they were seeing things in Tommy that weren't really there. This is who he is.

If Riley was the coach this team needs he would have said something like. It was my job to make sure that we ran the clock out. This is on me. I didn't instill in this team and staff the discipline necessary to seal the victory. (And then spend the next week pulling DL's head out of his ass and getting a running game that utilizes TA's talents and wears opponents down installed.)

You say, "He wasn't supposed to throw the ball but it was my fault for putting him in that situation." You tell the truth but take the blame. The reason you get paid 3 million dollars a year is to figure this stuff out. It's really not that difficult.

Langdorf & MR both said it was a bootleg all the way. TA wasn't supposed to throw it. Tommy really messed up. For a junior with his experience why he threw it was beyond stupid. He could have stayed in bounds and ran another 40 seconds off the clock.

I've been posting the last few weeks that Tommy has a poor football IQ. That was in display again on that play.

I can think of dozens of stupid offensive calls.

The coaching is pretty smart however. Freaking geniuses. They made TO look dumb! 3rd and 3. Let's throw a low percentage fade. Tommy is having an off day. Let's keep chucking it. Ground game if applied consistently would have controlled the ball and wore Illinois down. To hell with that, lets throw across the middle into zone coverage. Oops another 3 and out. We have a collective 150 years of coaching experience on the field and have yet to show we understand clock management or game situation management. Ya, it's all on TA.
