Funny how a QB who can throw accurately, a line that can block, receivers who can get open, and multiple players who don't turn the ball over can make a perceived marginal OC look like a good OC. I wasn't too keen on the wide passes to Fidone, but I'm sitting here racking my brain about calls I didn't like and I can't really think of any. It is possible they put the TE passes on film to set Colorado up for faking the throw to the TE and having the wideouts hold a block for a couple counts and race down the field. When HH got in I wished they would have run an option and let him keep, but they probably don't want him to get banged up unnecessarily. I was hard on Satt sometimes last year starting in the Minnesota game (not running when it was working), so I have to give credit where credit is due and say he called a good game.

I was thinking the same thing for the Fidone screens. Gotta be setting something up.

I'm sure they have something built off that. But in truth, those quick outs to him weren't blocked very well. He never really had a chance to get going after the catch. I thought he did a pretty good job getting what he did. Especially on the one he took down inside the 5 yardline. He finished through the defender and got some extra yards.

1 yard on 3 receptions?

He’s such a big target. His strength is finding an opening 5-15 yards out. I’m not on a fidone hate train but asking him to catch a bubble screen when we have guys like Barney to do that seems like a square peg and round hole situation.

Ya- that was one of the few issues I noticed. He needs north/south routes not this east/west screen game. I think he can still have a big year but his blocking also must really improve.

Again, Armstrong said that UTEP was keying on Fidone and IF the WRs had made their blocks the play was there. He added that he believes they were putting something on film for CU and that we’ll see some different plays for him based on those looks. No doubt the bubble screens to Nelson worked better but it wasn’t all about the result against UTEP.

They were 100% just putting it on film. The effort in a few plays vs most plays made that clear. The flats to Fidone were one. There was an RPO that had a guy wide open for 6. There was also a flat throw where guy could have turned it up but just didn't, not surn it was Fidone. There will be BIG plays that were set up last week. Maybe not week 2 but by week 4 There will. Might even be HH in motion, but it's a backwards pass and he throws deep........ staff gets to be more creative with a DR at QB. He can get them out of 2nd and 30 if risks go wrong

My comment was more speaking to the line that he worked hard for what he gained. Because the plays broke down he was hit almost immediately and had little chance. As a result he went down and didn’t really gain anything at all. Not saying it’s his fault and not hating. Just saying it’s not like he muscled out 6 yards when the play was doomed.

Sat called a good game. Congratulations for sure but the jury is still out. This just shows me that he doesn't have any excuses this year. He has a trigger man, weapons and I THINK at least a serviceable OL. Let's see what he can do...

This is where I am with Satt. I give him a mulligan for last year. I was actually impressed with his willingness to change the offense mid-season to play to his players strengths. Changing the scheme to fit the players seems like a rarity with a lot of coaches.

But now he has to show what he can do. No excuses this year.

I must be missing something, who is Armstrong?

Personally, I don’t think for a second the UTEP was “keying” on Fidone. He is a TE, when did he become such a game breaker that he has become the focus of the D?

Every play in FB has something else tied to it. That’s football and how O coordinators design plays. Nothing is done in isolation.

Sure, Colorado will see that plan on film but really, what is there with Fidone that creates fear in an opposing D coordinator?

That said, they need to get the kid going downfield in the medium to intermediate areas.

Like him, but still not convinced his in-game decisions are the best. Great game Saturday, but the jury is still out in my mind.

I don’t know why everyone is so hard on Fidone. I don’t think he looked too bad. I missed his failed blocks but we had a few of those from WRs that I saw

Raiola has a lot of options in the throw game. Neyor is looking like he is going to draw a lot of attention from opposing DBs, Banks is a big security blanket, and Bonner is a big target who can work the middle. The Barney kid is a live wire. EJ and Rahmir are good pass catchers. People were down in the mouth about Fidone, but his opportunities will come.
Adding Glenn Thomas to the staff is more important than has been discussed.

Tommy Armstrong. He did the call in show after the game. He was able to offer an educated view of what was going on on the field that most of us aren't capable of seeing.

Would have worked better if Carter Nelson getting the ball in that spot. Fidone has decent straight ahead speed but not the greatest side to side.

Agreed with the first paragraph, but I'm not sure where you're going with the "has to show what he can do" comment. Is that to mean that you think Satt would be fired or you're just saying that you will have a negative opinion about the OC?

he seemed to be talking on the headset as the play was being called so I believe he at least has input. There is zero doubt that he's deeply involved with the game planning.
Almost feels like Rhule added a modifier to make the play calling better. As head coach, this is a baller move, necessary and justified. My 2 cents.
Satt saves face

I'm sure he does have input - as does Rhule. I'm pretty sure only Satt has in-helmet communication with the QB. Otherwise, it has potential to be too messy & confusing.

Nelson is the 3rd string slot. People keep comparing the 2. They aren't the same right now and might not ever be.

those poorly executed "out in the flats" plays are basically a waste of a down if we cant block at least one guy out there and if we cant get a quick shifty dude to carry it out. fidone needs to be matched up with lbs.

I realize that and the plan was/still is to eventually move Nelson to TE and make him a dynamic TE rather than a very large but a tad slow WR. A bigger slot like Bonner or Nelson can line up in the same spot and run the same play. I don't think Fidone doubt was even lined up on the line of scrimmage on those plays, but I don't remember for sure.

I couldn't find the game on YouTube and forgot to watch the replay on the Big 10 network. Reading between the lines I got the impression the staff isn't 100% Nelson wouldn't just be a big WR. Based on what I saw Saturday, that would be fine with me.

He was talking on the headset during the time the play would have been called. Satt might have been sending the play to the QB but I believe Thomas at the very least was in Satt’s ear during that process. Last year Rhule vetoed play calls as he heard them. I believe Thomas has that power this year.

If he can get turned and going vertical he's pretty good

My impression during the game was I didn't feel that 3rd and 5 or less in the passing game was as high enough percentage of a play. That we were able to lean on the running game against an overmatched opponent that we may not be able to do going forward. Going back to the plays DR was in, I see this.

3rd & 2 at NEB 36

(13:42 - 1st) Dante Dowdell run for 2 yds to the NEB 38 for a 1ST down

3rd & 3 at UTEP 40

4th & 5 at UTEP 40

3rd & 5 at NEB 40

(1:26 - 1st) Dylan Raiola pass incomplete

3rd & 4 at UTEP 44

(13:38 - 2nd) Rahmir Johnson run for 2 yds to the UTEP 42

3rd & 3 at NEB 44

(8:32 - 2nd) Gabe Ervin Jr. run for 4 yds to the NEB 48 for a 1ST down

3rd & 5 at UTEP 47

(6:41 - 2nd) Emmett Johnson run for 42 yds to the UTEP 5 for a 1ST down

3rd & 2 at UTEP 38

(0:27 - 2nd) Rahmir Johnson run for 3 yds to the UTEP 35 for a 1ST down

3rd & 4 at NEB 33

(9:40 - 3rd) Dylan Raiola pass complete to Isaiah Neyor for a 1ST down

3rd & 4 at UTEP 7

(6:34 - 3rd) Dylan Raiola pass complete to Emmett Johnson for a 1ST down UTEP Penalty, Defensive Holding (Maurice Westmoreland) declined for a 1ST down

In the 1st half, we had 11 plays where it was 3rd or 4th and 5 or less or 5 yards or less for a TD. We ran on 7 of those plays and converted 6 times. We passed 4 times and converted only once, where technically it was by penalty but we would have got it. So, this is an area that needs work as I don't think we can count on an 85% conversion rate against better defenses by running the ball on 3rd down.

In the second half, play was limited for the 1st team, but we did go 2-2 in the air.
