Any opinions on tablets? I know next to nothing about brands, quality, etc. Want to get something on the cheap. I see the 7-inch Kindle Fire is $50. All I really want to use it for is running home internet/wifi, email, and taking it with me traveling so I can leave the laptop at home.

Any suggestions would be great. Thx!

consider the screen resolution.. those that are inexpensive, usually have a low resolution, and if it is something you can live with, then no problem, but some of those displays are just horrible

Good to know. Wish I could play with that Fire but being it's Amazon, probably not sold in retail stores.

How much are you wanting to spend? Is cheap $200, $300, or under $100?

I have the 50 dollar fire and it performs very well. I bring it with me to work when I don't want to lug my laptop around, the screen resolution is fine, when you consider the price. Also you can remove the ads and amazon's firmware and switch it to stock android relatively easily. You can't go wrong with the fire

For under $100, your best bet is probably the Kindle Fire you mentioned. You can find a ton of Android tablets for under $100, but the quality can vary pretty wildly, and even one of reasonably good quality, if it's some no name brand, there is also software updates to consider. Most of those no name brands will have iffy at best support for updates.

The Kindle Fire should do pretty much everything you need, and Amazon is a trustworthy brand and should have pretty good update support. If you're a Prime member, you'll have easy access to Prime Instant Video, Prime Music, etc... Another good thing, Fire OS is Android, just with Amazon's spin on it. A pretty good portion of the apps available on Google's store are available on Amazon's too. Plus, if you're so inclined, it is possible to install some of Google's apps and apps that are on the Play Store, with a little tinkering. Fairly easy to follow tutorials can be found with a quick search.

For what you want, the Kindle Fire is perfect. Just takes some time getting used to Amazon tablets because everything is Amazon related.

As others have said, for what you want, the Kindle Fire should be fine. For Christmas, my wife is buying me an ASUS Zenpad. I wanted a 10 inch tablet but needed to stay under $200, and the Zenpad cost her $149. It has decent specs, biggest downer is the screen as it is only 1280x800, but for me that's fine. 720p or so HD is fine for me on a tablet. I also like that it is a pretty "vanilla" version of Android, ASUS didn't add too much to it and bog it down.
