OT - Brushes with Fame

I've had dinners with a couple of Nobel laureates, Tom Cech and Michael Brown and a couple of others who may yet win Nobel prizes (I won't jinx them by naming them). Yeah, I'm a science geek and that is a small world.
As far as Nebraska athletes go I played baseball with Guy Ingles (great guy) in pony league and against Johnny Rodgers (robbed me of a hit) in high school. Also played rugby with or against guys on the US National team. Jay Hansen was a mean sob and was hooker on the first US side to play England at Twickingham Stadium.
Fun topic Beav

I've been super "lucky" as far as celebrities go. I live in LA and work in entertainment, not at a super high level, but there are generally stars around. But my favorite interaction is when I was a kid- Barry Bonds. He was always super grumpy around the media and hordes of fans. However, as he was leaving candlestick after a game, he saw a group of us (6 or so kids) by the end of the parking lot. He pulled up and said he was thinking of a number between 1 and 10 and whoever guessed it would get his autograph. I didn't win but it was awesome. It wasn't that he was being stingy or too good to sign everything. He interacted with us and created a moment that I remember 20 years later. I think I guessed 6 by the way. I'm pretty sure the winner guessed 2.

This one is always interesting. Who is the most famous person you know or have interacted with beyond just "I saw so-and-so at the airport one time and said hi I'm a big fan"?

Mine are pretty Nebraska sports-centric. I waited on Suh a couple times at Lazlos, and I used to do bits for Schick & Nick, Schick now works for ESPNU and was on the ABC national broadcast yesterday for their countdown show.

I have a couple friends who have been on national commercials and had small roles on big TV shows.

Whadya got? Whodya know?

I was taken to lunch at the Cloud Room on the top floor of the Kiewit Plaza. As I looked around, Warren Buffett sat at one table and Walter Scott at another.

Also saw Rev Jesse Jackson recently at O'Hare.
Still bump into various Husker athletes downtown at lunch, etc.
Coached Ben Cotton in youth basketball-- great kid and family.
Got autographs from Dickie V and Jimmy Valvono at the Final Four in 1991-- both class acts
Multiple visits with Dr. Tom in church
Sat right behind Keanu Reeves and his buddies at the USC game in Lincoln a few years ago. They were very nice and we didn't even recognize it was him for more than a quarter.
Saw the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders in an airport a few years ago. They were all gorgeous and I literally dropped my fork I was eating with when they smiled and said hi.

My favorite-- about 20 years ago visiting Disney with the family. The boys were about 7 and 4 at the time. Saw Kathy Ireland and bumped into her as she coming in the side entrance door of Splash Mountain while we were just exiting the ride. She smiled at my kids and I drooled. Told my wife "that was Kathy Ireland". Wife says who? I say "Kathy Ireland--- she's a Sports Illustrated swimsuit mod....... um. She does ads for K-Mart". My wife was not impressed but my male friends were.

I worked valet at Embassy Suites in downtown Lincoln and had a few 'brushes' with local celebrities/famous people. My favorite is when USC came to town and Will Ferrell brought his entourage to the hotel. The day he is checking out I'm standing next to him on the front drive and I have no clue what to say to him so I just say "..hey ma where's the meatloaf.." Will looked at me and said "Hey ya got any?"

Then my co-worker walks to him and shakes his hand and says "Thank you for coming to Nebraska Mr. Ferrell."

To this day I kick myself for quoting something so lame and letting my co-worker be lame at the same time. I will be surprised if Will Ferrell ever comes back to Nebraska because of my lame quote.

im sure that happens a lot...

I go to my uncle's place in MT a couple times a year. William Devane has a place just up the road. I see and chat with him at the local hangout a lot and ended up doing a shot of Jameson with him last time. Very cool guy and down to earth. Drives an '04 Tacoma. He is quite funny, too.

Did you ask where he kept his gold?:)

Prince.
Twice.
Played darts with Kid Rock and James King.
He put quarters up and said he got next game. Told him he gonna have to wait.
Somebody told me that's Kid Rock.
I said That's just some dude from Council Bluffs with some new shoes.
He heard me say it and thought it was funny.
I don't remember a whole lot after that.

[QUOTE="4.6.3, post: . I have always had a thing for her.

Sincerely,
Every guy who isn't gay....

She's a total babe.[/QUOTE]

Honestly, she doesn't do much for me. Nothing going on in the 'up top' region. Gotta have some curves.

When I was president of a film theater board, we held a few events in which actors, directors, etc., were honored. Had the chance to share a meal or a beverage with a few of them, and they were mostly positive experiences. John Beasley, a veteran actor originally from Omaha, stands out as someone who was exceptionally nice and incredibly generous with his time. He's a guy you would want to have a beer with over and over again.

On the flip side, we once premiered a Peter Fonda film, and I was assigned to hang out with him to kill time between the reception and the actual screening. It might have been the longest two hours of my life, as it was nearly impossible to discuss any topic with him without the conversation turning back to how he never got a fair shake in Hollywood and never got the respect he deserved as an actor. Suffice it to say that getting a root canal would have been a more pleasant experience. That said, once time came for the screening and interaction with the audience, Fonda worked the room extremely well and made everyone feel as though he really wanted to be there. So that night, he certainly proved that he can act.

Met IM Hipp at the Columbia SC airport when we were waiting for our luggage.
Sat next to Cott Campbell (horse racing) at a luncheon in Aiken.
Met a few Tottenham Hotspur players at Pike Place. Plus their mascot. No idea which players as I don't follow EPL. At the same function met/had pictures with Sounders Andy Rose and Chad Barrett
Had another opportunity to meet/have picture taken with Chad Barrett at the Ninety. (it's a Sounder's thing.Winking)

I thought Howard Hessman was a hobo.
They were filming About Schmidt and I was home on the third story deck.
I didn't see him but heard somebody say hows the weather up there?
I said same as it is down there. He said he was coming up.
He said he was hiding and just wanted to smoke a joint.
He offered to share, but I didn't want hobo germs.
So that's how I didn't get high with Dr. Johnny Fever.

When I saw this thread, I was hoping you would post this story again. It's just as hilarious this time around.

Entered ND stadium with Johnny Rodgers, arm wrapped around my shoulder as we walked in to the Sea of Red for the first time together. He turned to me and said "this a beautiful sight to see so much red".

Spent nearly a full period of Stars/Hawks game in Chicago, back when Brett played, with Bobby Hull. Just the two of us had couple beers and talked hockey, prett cool.

My best was Bill Murray. Beer was present and I had to ask for a Caddyshack, " Assistant groundskeeper....". He said that he did it in one take and really didn't remember. I started the whole sequence, he finished it.

I was in Koala Blue on Melrose in the 80s getting an iced tea before a Hollywood Bowl event. Olivia Newton John came in with a box of stuff to restock the shelves. It was her business that had a snack counter and Australia stuff for sale. She looked like a normal business owner, jeans and a denim shirt. She asked me if I liked my tea, I said I did, I liked her shop, and Grease was one of my favorite movies. She said it was fun making the movie, told the clerk she would be back in a couple hours and walked out.

I have a family member who is a billionaire.

One of my friends is Tim Burke former Husker and former MLB All Star pitcher. Tim invited me to have dinner and drinks with Tim Raines and Tim Wallach (The three Tim's of the Expos).

I'm friends with a former Centerfold.

While living in Houston I played basketball on a regular basis with Allen Leavell and Robert Reid of the Houston Rockets.

I was on a flight from Omaha to New Orleans back in the day with Ric Flair, the British Bulldog, and many wrestlers. Those guys can party. I was a young kid, but loved every minute of getting some autographs and watching those guys.

ok, give it up...which centerfold?

Nothing major for me compared to most.
Attended a few church services sitting behind Dr. Tom back in the day and greeted him a couple times there. Had a few friends in the early '90s that played for the Huskers Will Washington being about as nice a guy as possible at least to me. My sister dated a former DB turned coach when he was a Sophomore and I advised her then that he would not be one to remain faithful...
Craig Morton was a cousin to one of my HS classmates so he visited a few times.
Saw Reggie White in the Cleveland airport but I did not bother him to speak.

Strange connection but I play a mobile app game with one of the main effects(masks etc.) makers for the zombies in The Walking Dead. He shares some of his personal artwork and he is obviously talented. Another person on the same game does a lot of movie extra work(Captain America and Bridge of Spies lately).

I played on a team for a couple years of town league basketball with a guy named Nick 'Stone Man' Firtha who held the WBA heavyweight boxing title at the time.

I played against the 1971 National Champs in a benefit hoops game....THAT was a whole group of famous people!!! Later played against Nick Pino in a AAU game....hairiest man ever...played high school basketball against three of the greatest prepsters in Nebraska history...Tom Kropp, Bob Siegel, Gene Harmon...

All of that is a reach!:)

I was on a company sponsored trip to China, and ran into Don King on the Great Wall. He was there with John Ruiz and Evander Holyfield promoting their fight. I never saw more than Evander's hand waiving out of the limo door. But there was a big crowd of people around King and Ruiz on the Great Wall.

Pretty wild to go half way around the world and run into that!

Lol the mention of "a centerfold" reminded me of another one. Not a very good story but "Melissa Midwest" came into Famous Dave's when I worked there. All the dudes on staff were back in the kitchen like "Who is the hot blonde in the lobby? Why do I recognize her? Is she in my comp class? Nahh.....man I could SWEAR I know her..."

The girl I was dating at the time, her sister was friends with MM evidently and did some relatively tame pics on MM's website (of course she was Melissa Lincoln then) with her of them having a little underwear pillow fight or some such thing. Girlfriend was FURIOUS about it, I was like, "Ohhh yeah, that's awful...I will totally not be looking those up as soon as you go home........"

Another girl in Lincoln did porn for a while and she really was in my comp class.

George Brett was my fantasy camp coach for a week. Spent several nights at dinner/drinking with him. Great stories.

President Bush (elder) and his wife.

The usual huskers that most have met in and around Omaha: Johnny Rodgers, TO, Crouch etc. I frequent Louie's Wine Dive enough that I can say I "know" Jamie Burrow. Winking

Back in the early 90s I was in the small town of Dothan Alabama managing a plant there. Hired an older gentleman to do custodial work and during the interview he told me his son was Brad Baxter (played RB for the jets). I brushed it off as an old man telling stories. I mean, why would an NFL running back's dad need to work? Turns out it was true and Brad would come by all the time in the off season and we would BS all the time (the women swooned). His dad was old school and wouldn't take his son's money (although eventually moved into a wing of Brad's huge house he built just outside of town.) Much respect for him. The guy wasn't a household name but played six years for them and had 11 TDs one year. I would even see him around town and he wouldn't hesitate coming up and say hello.

Nephew was on MTV back in the 90s and now does the Bleacher Report on HLN's morning express with robin meade.

Was at the Houston Medical Center Marriott working with the hotel's Front Desk Mgr back in 2001, we were standing by elevators waiting, elevator doors opened and man in a wheel chair comes out, guy says, "what you staring at son", I was so shocked standing directly in front of Jerry Lewis. The Front Desk Mgr introduced me to Jerry, we all talked for a short time, as Jerry was schedule for treatments at Houston Medical Center.
