OT - Brushes with Fame

I thought playing basketball with two of the Rockets was more impressive, but alright, Jordan Munroe was the centerfold.

It is.
I used to DJ
Sometimes at strip clubs.
People be suprised at how broken and desperate some of those girls are.
Even centerfolds.

I was once Bill Russell's personal bodyguard at the Bob Gibson golf tourney he used to have. It was kind of funny because he was giant next to me. He did introduce me to Chief Hall of Famer Bobby Bell, which I thought was pretty cool. I got a pic with Sandy Koufax later that day. My job all day on the course was pretty much saying "Mr. Russell is not signing autographs." No kidding.

Speaking of Bob Gibson, I once ran into him at the Homers in Bellevue. I had worked his tourney several times, and he ended up right behind me in line waiting to purchase our CD's. The clerk was nowhere to be found, so I turned around and introduced myself and told him I had worked his tourney several times. I asked him what he felt about the Barry Bonds steroid scandal going on, figuring he would tell me he would put one in Bonds ear if he dug in the box looking to get comfortable. He looked at me like I stunk and didn't say a word. I turned back awkwardly to the register and didn't say another thing. At least he didn't beat me up like he did that Mexican guy at the gas station. Bob Gibson is every bit the dick that everyone says he is. Just my opinion.

-Really close family-friend of mine grew up childhood friends with David Spade. She is a good few years older than me but she knows so many famous people it's ridiculous. Denzel Washington, Marcus Allen, Spade is my favorite though. Still keeps in touch with him every now and then. She said the spotlight and attention changed him forever. Spade told her bits and pieces about Chris Farley. Really fascinating listening to her talk about them.

-My boss who I am close with and gave me internship in southern California had lunch and talked about branding Macbeth with Tom DeLong, lead singer of Blink 182.

-Shook hands with Mike Riley and told him good luck on the season, also told John Papuchis good luck once and said he "thanks brother!"

-Tony Hawk autographed a poster for me when I had my appendix taken out in 2006 in Omaha

-Took a picture with Larry the Cable guy while tailgating before a home game

-My Grandpa wrote Tom Osborne a letter thanking him for not going to Colorado or Texas Tech. TO wrote him a letter back and Grandpa framed it, and put it on the wall.

-High school journalism teacher was kissed on the lips by Elvis Presley. I think backstage!

Can't think of any others at the moment! But whoever said this was a good topic is spot on!!!

Used to play a lot of pickup basketball with NU basketball and football players. As older fans may remember Turner Gill's sophomore season was cut short by a calf injury that required surgery. The following summer he and Nate Mason played a lot of pick up ball at the outdoor courts at 40th and South. In one game I was back on D against a 3 on 1 break, with Mason in the middle with the ball and Gill on my left. I faked at Mason to make him pick up his dribble and then, figuring he'd pass to his buddy I broke hard toward Gill. Sure enough, he passed to Gill, but Gill had broken inside and we collided hard. When I got up Gill was rolling around on the ground in pain, clutching his lower leg. Certain that I had reinjured the calf I started planning my escape from Nebraska. Turned out that he had just tweaked his ankle, but I really had a bad couple of seconds.

Another time I was playing in the old Coliseum. I was guarding a DB named Sammy Something and he was extremely quick so I was having to focus entirely on him. No one called out the pick and so I ran full tilt into a pick set by Dave Rimington, and hit him at a very awkward angle. I actually had to go out one of the side doors and puke.

My most proud moment was when I, at 5'8", pulled a rebound away from Big 8 player of the year Andre Smith and put it back in the basket. Of course, I came in from behind him, he thought he was alone and was looking the other way to start the break. I grabbed the ball out of his hands and put it back in. Boy, did he get crap from the guys waiting for next game. I thought for a second he was going to kill me, but then he grinned and said something like "nice play, it won't happen again." Which was right.

Back when I was practicing in Denver they were filming the courtroom scenes for the New Perry Mason show in Courtroom 1 for the City and County of Denver. I met and talked to a number of B list actors when hanging around the clerk's office. I literally ran into Gordon Jump when I was hurrying into the clerk's office to get a motion filed before the office closed. After running into him I understood why they called him "The Big Guy" on WKRP. The actors and actresses I talked to were all very cool, with the exception of Rene Enriquez, who was probably best known for playing Ray Caetano (sp) on Hill Street Blues. He was kind of a dick when all I said to him was I really enjoyed him on Hill Street. I won't repeat what he said.

Edit: Man, I can't believe I forgot this one. Back when I lived in Denver I used to go to a bar called Cricket on the Hill. Had great live music. The band that played Tuesday's was the Kelly Moon Group. They had a back-up singer named Ankie. Very pretty. I met her and very quickly found out that she was married to the drummer, but we continued to talk every Tuesday. She and her husband met when they were with Bob Seger before he became famous. One night I went in to the cricket and Ankie said "remember who I said I used to sing with? Want to meet him?" Turned out Seger was in town to have surgery on nodes on his throat. He was scared to death that the surgery would screw up his voice and so was drinking, uh...heavily. Sat with him the whole night and we talked about all kinds of interesting stuff. He is a very smart guy, which came through even when he was fairly plastered. Oh, and in line with the brilliant opening comments others have reported saying to celebs, my opening line was "me and my buddies listened to you all the time in college. We called you Uncle Bob." Duh.

This one is always interesting. Who is the most famous person you know or have interacted with beyond just "I saw so-and-so at the airport one time and said hi I'm a big fan"?

Mine are pretty Nebraska sports-centric. I waited on Suh a couple times at Lazlos, and I used to do bits for Schick & Nick, Schick now works for ESPNU and was on the ABC national broadcast yesterday for their countdown show.

I have a couple friends who have been on national commercials and had small roles on big TV shows.

Whadya got? Whodya know?
I went to Florida with the family and at the Dallas/Ft Worth Airport I saw Ken Griffey Jr and got my picture with him. He was very unfriendly at first, which I understand cause he didn't want t big scene, but when we got to Orlando we were all waiting for our luggage we talked for 15-20 minutes! Great guy and met my whole family and we talked about his son and golf. The funniest thing he said was when his clubs came rolling out he was like ah there are my money makers... lol We talked about him playing with all kinds of celebs and playing Sandhills out here. Extremely humble and nice guy.

John Travolta, Bobby Knight (Texas Tech Knight, not Indiana Knight), Fall Out Boy, Charlie Daniels, Steven Curtis Chapman, Rascal Flatts (had lunch with them), Kelly Clarkson, Tony Dorsett, Brooks Robinson, and a few other athletes, bands, Latin Bands/Artists, and several authors(many of which were romance novelists, preachers and inspirational novelists). Some I cant remember as it was over 10 years ago. I worked for a company that handled autograph signings, book signings and meet and greets when I lived in DFW. Biggest crowds were for the Latin bands. Dallas swat had to come out a time or 2.
While in college, I played basketball with Corliss Williamson, Todd Day, Lee Mayberry and pretty much any other Razorback basketball player in the mid 90s. Got dunked on a time or 2, but worth it. They were dominating forces of nature in the HPER building at the University of Arkansas.

If we're including Nebraska coaches, I gave coach Ekeler a beer after the Mizzou win in Columbia. He chugged it.

Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase is my second cousin twice removed, but never met him. I did meet his grandmother and that is how I found out

My wife worked with Tommy Frazier and hung out with him at the Green Onion. Didn't say much to him about football, and was pretty much just bsing. Wouldn't say I "know" him or anything

This a pretty good one!!!

Grew up in Hudson NY and used to go see Mike Tyson box above the sherriffs dept in Catskill when he was trained by Cus D'Amato when he was teenager, later when he was famous used to see him driving a rolls royce around town all the time. Met Mark Harmon once in Charlotte airport, very short guy. Sat one table over from Elton John at a restaurant in Buckhead, he had a large entourage and a ridiculous wig. Sat a couple rows behind Charles Barkley at a Hawks game, he is a large man and doesn't like to be bothered while watching a game, but don't blame him. Also sat directly behind Vlade Divac at a Hawks/Kings game and he is very gracious about taking pics and signing. Once was riding a motorcycle in Ooltewah TN and had Peyton Manning follow me in a Lincoln Navigator, came to a light and gave him the thumbs up and he waved and did same. When I was in college at UNL, I had a friend who was a guitarist and he knew P-Nut from 311 so we used to go up to Omaha to see them, we got to hang out backstage a couple times, really cool dudes.

Best experience was a couple years ago through work got a couple of member passes to the Berkman's Place at Augusta for a Wed practice round at Masters. After arriving in the reserved parking we were escorted away from the peasants to a world we don't get to experience, walked around a corner only to be greeted by Condoleeza Rice, she was a new member and it was her duty to greet us VIP visitors, but she was very gracious and we chatted for a few minutes, very smart. After that got to have breakfast with Lynn Swann who is also a member, really nice guy and he looks like he could still play. After breakfast got to practice putting with a group of billionaires.

Brother in law was a coach at NU and we invited the entire NU football coaching staff to our St. Patrick's day party. Devany and all the crew showed up (except Dr. Tom) and we had a great time--party did not break up till wee hours and several of the coaches needed help.

I watched the 1995 Colorado-NU game in a hotel bar with Herman Cain, then the Chairman of Godfather's.

Every time Frazier completed a pass, Herman poked me and yelled, "But he can't pass!!"

Then he laughed and took another swig oh his beer.

i just remembered, i sat next to bob davie at the denver airport a couple years ago. i did not ask him about cable.

i just kept thinking to myself, does he even realize he is a part of a long standing joke on hol? i was dying to tell him.

I heard him on Rome before they played a late season game at New Mexico this year, and he sounded like a really nice guy... He would get a kick out of it I think!

The President Of The United States made it damn near impossible for me to get home tonight.

Saw the post about Bob Gibson above and him being not so friendly. I have bumped into him on three separate occasions and had the opposite reaction.
1. The week that Joe Torre and he got fired from the Cardinals about 20 years ago, we were in St. Louis visiting my in-laws. They were at Purina Farms with their families, as we were. I was holding my 2 year old and looked and there was Bob Gibson standing next to me. I had a Husker shirt on we talked for a minute. A few minutes later I politely approached him for an autograph and he gave me one, albeit quietly.
2. Saw him at the airport in Omaha on the way home from the NU-Tennessee Orange Bowl. My oldest son (age 8) went to ask him for an autograph while I stayed a few feet away. He said "sure buddy" and talked to him so long I finally went over and said hello.
3. He was on a plane from Omaha to St. Louis for a Cardinal event and I sat directly ahead of him. He was seated next to a woman from India who I don't think had any idea who he was. They talked model trains the entire trip and he was as friendly as could be. I think he is just shy by nature but his competitive juices kick under the right circumstances. I'm a fan of his though.

One more story. I was playing basketball at Wesleyan, and was an average player but blessed with the ability to jump out of the gym back then. During a summer camp we had a KC King named Bill Robinzine come up for a camp. He was one of the first true power forwards in the NBA. After the clinic we got to scrimmage with him for awhile. I was fortunate enough to block one of his shots and he said nice block. A few trips later down the court I blocked him on a drive to the basket. He kind of chuckled like "you got me". The next time down on defense he set a blind pick on me so hard it knocked the wind out of me. Lesson learned. But at least it was a story to tell later.

Met Christina Aguilera years ago when our band opened for the band, that opened for the band, that opened for her. Also saw Weezer with No Doubt at Westfair Ampitheater in 97 on the Tragic Kingdom tour. I made my way to the front of the stage (with my gf in tow) and gave Gwen a rose. She bent down and took the rose, and gave me a peck on the cheek. I was on cloud 9. I have always had a thing for her.
I was at that concert. It was awesome. I didn't get close to the stage. I was busy on a blanket, getting busy lol.

oh, i saw shaq at a mall. that was a spectacle when everyone figured out he was there..

I ran into Jim Gafigan in a Hampton Inn in Rapid city SD. He slept in his tour bus while his wife and kids (and nanny) stayed in the hotel. My family and his family were the only people eating breakfast. While at the breakfast bar I yelled over to my wife that "what this breakfast needs is more bacon". I peered over to him and the look on his face was priceless. My wife and his wife talked a lot while in the hot tub. She is his manager. Really nice family.
