Pretty unfair. He took over a team that played zero defense for years. Solich took over a machine. Not sold on Venables at all but judge him after a couple years. With the portal, no job should be a 5 yr reclamation anymore. Maybe 2, tops, then judge.

Venables is a tool, long term loser for OU and I couldnt be happier. The cheaters will get whats coming to them.

that was a lot of fun to watch. Easy to root for both teams but started rooting for FSU…

Look, no one has been a longer and more intense member of the He-man Oklahoma Haters Club than me. But I like Venables. Earlier this year when Nebraska was in complete disarray he could have scored 70 on us but recognized the situation and took mercy.
Now I think OU could use a little humbling and now that making mincemeat out of the NCAA rules is no longer even possible I can't fault them for paying players. Kind of takes the edge off my ability to despise them.
But I still don't forgive the Barry Switzer era. All this modern nonsense about how the two teams respected each other and what a great guy Switzer was is laughable. Switzer was a grade A sleazebag.

Still remember the banner at the 1978 game? “ hey Barry, how is Mrs Lacewell doing?”

Lincoln Riley gutted OU’s offense and recruiting class when he left. One has to wonder if he saw a down year coming as well. OU will be back if their boosters don’t force a stupid move.

Oklahoma the most overrated program the last 10-15 years and playing in the big 12.
Agree, they are spiraling down.

Yes, Barry Switzer was a cheating old gas bag.

OU was without their entire starting offensive line and #1 and #2 running backs last night, yet took Florida State to the wire. The freshmen making their first starts for OU looked surprisingly good. Venables did sign the best OU class in years, including elite talent at quarterback and defense, so it will be interesting to see how he does once the remaining Riley/Grinch players aren't on the roster any more. The defense was notoriously soft under Riley, and his leftovers didn't respond well to Venables' complicated schemes on defense.

At any rate, Venables fared better in his first bowl game at OU than Frost did in his first bowl game at Nebraska.

Many down here believe OU will become the SEC equivalent of the B10's N. So, you're point is well taken. Brent just doesn't show the sideline demeanor of Saban, much more like Bo or Drinkwitz. N has made the correction with Rhule. How long will Venables last, IDK? A great coordinator does not always transfer to head coach success.

I think the same thing was said the last time Nebraska hired an NFL coach. Let's wait until he actually coaches a season or two before you pull a Sam Ehlinger and anoint them as being back.
