Meyers Tabbed as Preseason All-American by Perfect Game

Lincoln – Perfect Game released its Rawlings Preseason All-American teams on Monday and Nebraska junior Jake Meyers was a third-team pick. Meyers was the utility selection on the third team and was one of two Big Ten players named across the three teams, joining Maryland’s Kevin Smith, who was the first-team shortstop selection.

One the most dynamic two-way players in college baseball a year ago, Meyers led the Husker offense with a .326 batting average and his 1.42 ERA was tops on NU's pitching staff. The Omaha native is the first Husker to lead the team in both batting average and ERA dating back to at least 1967.

An early-season hand injury limited Meyers’ ability to pitch, but once he got on the mound he became a vital part of the weekend rotation. His 1.42 ERA was the second-lowest single-season ERA in school history by a pitcher who threw at least 40.0 innings, trailing only Bill McGuire's school-record 1.29 ERA from 1984.

Along with hitting .326, Meyers added 12 doubles, a team-best six triples, two home runs, 29 RBIs, 39 runs and 10 stolen bases. The last time a Husker started at least nine games on the mound and hit in 40 games or more was 1993 when Alvie Shepherd went 2-5 in 11 starts and hit .278 in 57 games at the plate.

Later this month the Huskers will open practice in preparation for the 2017 season. Nebraska opens the year in Tempe, Ariz., on Friday, Feb. 17, when it plays the first of four games against UC Riverside at Tempe Diablo Stadium, the Spring Training home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Meyers, Waldron, and Schrieber could all bring home some hardware if they continue to improve as much as they have already.

When Jake is on the mound we lose a bat, right? Either Schreiber or Miller sits out. Suppose that someone like Hohensee can claim a weekend spot, that would be good I think.

If Derek and Matt and Jake H (or Robbie or ...) can cover weekends I'd move Meyers to mid-week and have a terrific 2, 3, 4 spot in the lineup all weekend. Plus one helluva mid-week pitcher.

Where am I going wrong?

Late in last season, we put Schreiber in RF and Miller at 1B when Meyers pitched and served as the DH.

In college, P and DH are not tied together and you can have one player serve both roles and leave the game as a pitcher but remain DH.

Right. Don't seem to think, tho, that Scott is the guy for right. I do think we need those three bats all weekend. My idea is hinged on whether or not someone can step up and claim the Sunday mound.

I think they want Meyers to be a midweek guy/bullpen pitcher. Truthfully, he is too valuable in the outfield to really use him at DH in a weekend series. A Tuesday night pitcher against Creighton would be perfect.

Exactly, that's how I see it as well. Wasn't suggesting Meyers for DH. He goes to RF and Scott and Ben alternate as DH/1st base, right?

Glad to hear Meyer may move to mid-week. Solves the weekend bats problem and it also means someone else has earned a weekend starter role. Good news.

Correct, not sure if it will happen or not because you still need to start your best pitchers. Just the hope of the staff is all. Somebody should step up though.

Lets win the Big 10. Meyers needs to be a weekend starter. Schreiber played a serviceable RF last year and Miller as well at 1B. Get them the time early and routine. He is too good be a mid week guy.

With Jake's speed, don't see him in Right Field this year. He should be moving to Center replacing Bolt there and one of the other fielders moving to Right.

Lots of options for sure. To state the obvious, injuries and performance will figure in the lineup. There should be lots of competition when team practices start on Friday. Erstad has no reservations about playing freshmen and other deserving underclass men. The red-white games showed we have a very good freshman class and a few really talented transfers. Therefore, don't rule out a sleeper. As for Meyers, the guy can do it all but why add lot of innings to his workload if we have enough good arms. I like him lot as reliever, mid-week starter or maybe a left handed closer? GBR.
