Nick Gates will declare

Can someone tell me what body of evidence is there that he would make a better guard in the NFL? By NFL standards he seems pretty light for a guard. I could be totally out to lunch but I don't recall him ever playing guard. This seems to be one of those message board deals that keeps getting mentioned enough that it becomes some kind of legend. Help me out.

He may lack a bit of size to be a guard; however, he SIGNIFICANTLY lacks the quickness to play either tackle spot against NFL-caliber defensive ends.

Bullshit. He was taking off plays left and right. The kind of effort he was putting on film was nothing short of pathetic.

And NFL teams see everything....who knows maybe Gates already (or close) has a degree to fall back on— cause I don’t see the length or footwork for an NFL OT or the strength required to play inside.

We've complained and complained about Gates getting destroyed during games. He IS a weak link on our offensive line. I cant say I've seen a starter as lazy as him. Physically he looks like a fat out of shape tight end, I'm sorry if some feel that we're bashing him but we will not progress with players like him on our offensive line. This is about Nebraska's future to me, not Nick Gates future so if he see's himself getting drafted then by all means please move on so Nebraska can as well.

He's physically impressive as a Junior offensive linemen..

With these guys like Sam Darnold, that just suck, being at the top of the draft boards, maybe the NFL is at a point where they are drafting only on potential and not film...

If so, Gates is lucking out!

If he changes his mind and stays, apparently he needs to move to guard and sit behind Foster, Farmer, Wilson, and Raridon... if the posters above are correct about the coaches playing him in the wrong position. At 6'4" or 6'5" and 295# I can see that being the case I guess.
Have you watched Darnold play? He's right up there with Mayfield in terms of college qb's and he has better measurable for the NFL. Without him, USC would have lost 3 more games each year.

Our whole offensive line is a weak link.

I actually think arm-wise Lee is on par (If not better) than Darnold. Lee needs to learn to see underneath coverage better, and honestly he is better throwing intermediate and vertical routes than horizontal wide-receiver screens at the 5 yard line.

Arm talent is just a small part of being a qb and nowhere near the most important part. First and foremost, qb's need to be good decision makers and Tanner is severely lacking in that area.

I'd be shocked if Lee doesn't get drafted. He's got all the physical tools. Get his some time working with a professional QB coach as a backup and he could develop into a career NFL guy.

If he is going to give shit effort for another year I'd rather he leaves. I pray we have enough depth to put his ass on the bench in the event that he takes plays off like he did this year.
I don't think that kind of effort is going to translate well at the next level...

He is as bad as he is good. I watched the game last night.

He made some great plays vs OSU, but he made a lot of crappy plays too. If that is what a future great NFL QB looks like, I will take a crappy NFL QB that is a great college QB over him any day of the week.

He isn't on top of the draft board for no reason. His QB passer rating is 150+. I understand that, but the guy was almost setting records for turnovers. You can't win when your QB turns it over that much.

He needs to feel the pressure and protect the ball in the pocket better last night. He may have a ton of talent, and Lee might as well, but his 13 INTs and 9 fumbles are bad numbers. His OL was horrible this year, but if he is supposedly the #2 QB, I would rather draft one of the #3 - #5 QBs instead.

Measurables don't win games. Happens all the time.

You guys need to remember the OL received little if any coaching the past 3 years under Cavs. Improvement will happen at this position.

Everyone has to do what they feel is best in their life. I just watched a Scott Frost coached Central Florida team beat a strong Auburn team this afternoon. Chances are Gates could have been a negative influence next year, Yes, he may be another Valentine and I hope he is but Nebraska needs a total restructure next fall. Those that are not buying in need to leave now.

A win, win if you ask me. Good luck to him. He will probably get a couple of years on someone's practice roster. Even a couple of years on practice squad at rookie minimum ain't a bad gig though. Maybe he will figure out the dedication and discipline required. If not, he will be back at UNL in a couple years finishing out his degree. However it works out for him, IMO our OLine just got better. We need guys who already have the fire in their belly.

For 2017, practice squad players make $7,200 a week. Assuming a player is on the practice squad from August-December, they would make $144,000 per season. I believe NFL Rookies that are on the regular squad make $450,00 per season.

Nothing wrong with making $144,000 for 5 months of work on the practice squad. Winking

Hopefully he better change his work habits dedicate himself to bust ass in weight room or else won't even make practice squad. Better be able to back up his attitude

VV was a good football player.
VV only made 10 tackles his senior year, which made a lot of us wonder if he was ready for the next level. He appeared to be more potential than performance. OTOH, VV and Collins formed a very stout interior in 2015 that helped NU finish in the Top 10 in rush defense. I think Belichick is kind of a douche, but there are indications that he can identify good football players. ;-)

Maybe he will.
Money is a great motivator.
Maybe its just what he needs and he knows it.

Maybe now NU can find a big OL that actually does something besides just standing in one spot. Might make it as a pulling guard in the NFL. Remember that he has had ZERO coaching.

Wow, why would Gates declare? He won't even be drafted. Then what? Can he still go back and play another year at Nebraska if no one wants him in the NFL draft? Would he have to go to Div 2 or 3?

NFL teams don't waste practice squad spots with guys who don't work.

pretty nice thank you to Husker fans for a guy with such a 'bad attitude". Time to put this baby to bed guys. Things were not going well at NU and Gates was not one of our biggest problems. We seem to think a 21-22 year old guy should behave like a 40 year old who's been working at his career for the past 18 years..... Gates maybe was a little immature at times because wellllll....HE IS. He's just a young guy finding his way. Good luck to him. LOL to those writing him off already.

Lol.

Good riddance. With his feet, probably had no chance to play in this offense.
Gates has good enough feet to play guard in the NFL. Sirles has played every line position except center for the Vikings including left tackle. His best spot is guard but he has played tackle due to injuries. Versatile guy with a great attitude and work ethic and a team player. Reminds me of Russ Hochstein in that way. Make no mistake, Gates would have helped us this year until we can recruit or build some more OTs.
