Literally every year before 2025: "The spring game is awesome! What a great tradition! What a pride of Nebraska! What a great sell for recruits, a big recruiting weekend! I love seeing who might be future husker stars buried in the depth chart! We wanna play real football and see blocking and tackling!"

Husker fans in 2025: The spring game sucked anyway. It was meaningless, who cares, no one really liked it. Yeah, we're scared players will like other programs and coaches better than ours! Not a big deal at all, and if you are against what Rhule wants it means you are a freak and an idiot.

It’s the type of out of the box idea that should have been used to maintain tradition and avoid the portal.

Leadership should have started with: here’s the risks, now how do we make this happen and avoid as many risks as we can?

Dude Rhule is using his little "excuse" to try to get around the fans. It isn't about losing players to the portal, if that were the case he could work around it or just play the walk ons most of the game.
We have another coach who doesn't want to actually play football.

Cancelling the Spring game is a mistake. I don’t give a shit what Rhule says. This was almost like having another home game in the Spring. Good for fans, great for Lincoln businesses and, I would assume, a lot of fun for the younger players after the drudgery of practices.
Just one more tradition that bites the dust. And as each tradition goes away certain posters come out of the woodwork to explain to us all how great the changes are.
Here is another tradition that bit the dust: winning. Maybe Rhule can work on restoring that.

100% This doesn’t have to mean Rhule is bad coach, coward or failure. Next 2-3 years will tell that story. But it is a terrible individual decision. Period.

Shorten the “game” or scrimmage, don’t televise the game, make any potential poachers send someone to the game and work for their scouting efforts. And then water down the reps for everyone and call the game as vanilla as possible. If most players only get 1-2 series at most there’s not much to glean from that. Seems like they could’ve just made a few structural changes that would’ve mitigated our opponents ability to get a substantive look at our roster.

I don’t even go to the spring game. I have season tickets so I get plenty of opportunities to see the real deal. But I understand how important it is for some fans. I know people who have tickets as well and still love to go to the spring game. Kids love it and then there’s fans that can’t afford to take the whole family to a real game but they can at the spring game. And lastly, but not less important, the Lincoln business who count on and plan for having extra business and money from that weekend.

It is or has become an extra home game. I go to it every year and the bars and restaurants are packed.

The spring portal is from April 16 to 25. The "Husker Games" will take place on April 26 - one day after the portal closes. Making the spring game part of "Husker Games" on April 26 would have made the spring portal irrelevant for the spring game.

I believe they already voted to not have a spring portal window going forward, so this spring portal should be the last one.
Now, if it were me, I’d have only one portal a year but it would be in the spring, because a fall window leads to so much bullshit while the season is still going for many teams in December.
But, one window is better than two so it’s an improvement.

The FBS coaches have proposed a single portal window in January, but that hasn't been approved yet.

"During their meeting at the 2025 American Football Coaches Association convention, coaches supported the move to a single portal window from Jan. 2 through Jan. 12, starting for the 2025-26 academic year. Such a move would eliminate the current portal windows in both December and April with the single, shorter window. The recommendation now moves to the NCAA oversight committee and ultimately the NCAA Division I council for final approval, which is far from guaranteed."
