New "Spring Game Day" announced

There are no more small town walkons with the 105 now.
There will be some through this spring I believe. It would have been a nice audition for them to either earn a scholarship or find a new team at a lower level. Whatever. I think this is a bad move.

I am not disagreeing on the spring game not being played. But Rhule will be know who can still possibly make the 105 through the spring practices . By the way Nebraska is far from the only school to cancel their spring game . I guess I just don’t see the major issue when others are doing it for the same reasons as Rhule. I am not losing sleep over it like others on here ( not you) appear to be doing.

Meh spring game. Could care less. The Rhule is a coward and this is embarrassing crowd are the same ones always looking to complain about something. Fall is all I care about over scripted spring scrimmage grrrr practice.
Exactly
I’m sure they can all find another reason to go get stupid in a bar.

I don't think he is a coward, I just think it is a stupid choice.

If the answers are

1. Great Choice
2. Stupid Choice

It is pretty easy to see the correct answer.

I don't get spreading it out over Memorial Stadium, Hibner, and Devaney. I think that will dilute the crowd too much.

I guess since Husker Volleyball will be playing KU for their "Spring Game" at Devaney, that means not taking the team to a smaller Nebraska town as Cook did for many years? I hope that isn't a permanent change going forward. I think those trips to small town Nebraska paid off in spades for volleyball's popularity.
True but seriously Clark, can husker vb can any popular in state. Why not try to expand across the borders

But what really is the benefit? Why is stupid? Traditional? Meh with the last 2 decades. I want to see wins in the fall. For the fans? I bet they still get a good crowd just because an event is happening.

The benefit is for the fans and the players to get a live "game" in with fans there and for the coaches to get to work out some kinks in a "live" game atmosphere, that one really can't be discounted it is a very big deal.

Why is it stupid? I suppose tradition, to some extent. Also the idea of being afraid to lose players, I just don't think you can do it that way, does that also mean you won't yell at players or bench them, out of fear of them leaving?

Just seems like a poor choice. To me.

Fair enough. I just don’t see coaches and players gaining much from a scripted game in the spring that will hold over to benefits in the fall.

Playing in front of 90,000+ cannot be replicated in practice.

Add in the fact the spring game is a very proud NU tradition that brings our state together and has yielded many of the best memories NU fans have and it’s a slap in the face.

Simple as that.

True, but...

getting stupid in a bar on a Nebraska game day >>> getting stupid in a bar on just a random normal day
Exactly! One makes you look like a totally fun guy. The other just makes you look like you have a drinking problem!

Soooo many of us fans sort of would "brag" about how many people attended the spring game, it was a badge of honor in someways. Now it seems like fans are pretending like it was not a big deal.

There never was 90,000 for a spring game..
But I will miss the glorified scrimmage.

Attendance was very close to that for Frosty's first year and over 80K for Bo's first year.

My problem with dumping the Spring Game is it has served as a way to get the next generations of Husker fans excited about the Huskers. Attendance at the spring game has always had lots of kids decked out in their Husker gear munching on Vals and Runzas and looking for autographs from players. Sad to see that tradition brought to an end by a guy who has lived in Nebraska for all of 2 years.

It has always been a very meaningful event for the state

In the fall, its harvest time and tickets are more expensive

In April you can bring the whole family and enjoy a gameday atmosphere without opposing fans

A proud, generation-spanning tradition scrapped without a second thought by a penn state New Yorker

It’s interesting that Penn State is going forward with their spring game on April 26 - a day after the spring portal closes.

...and I thought I was the most negative Husker fan in Nebraska...obviously not the case!
This is how it is in this new age of NIL and the Transfer Portal. Nebraska has been a marginal at best team so far....I understand the concept of trying to protect your roster. The spring game was stupid anyway. So...Give it a rest already. DON'T GO if it offends you so much.

Personally, I quit going to the "Spring Game" or rather the spring practice years ago.

I think spring games will come back once they close the spring portal, which it looks like they will after this upcoming spring.

This seems like such a simple solution!!!!
It’s the type of out of the box idea that should have been used to maintain tradition and avoid the portal.

Leadership should have started with: here’s the risks, now how do we make this happen and avoid as many risks as we can?

Right?

"Hey, should we cancel the spring game because of the portal?"
"Yeah, Maybe, wait, can we just do the spring game AFTER the portal closes?"

Oh...shit

That’s why I don’t believe that was the real reason.

Of course they are

Every day that goes by we look softer and softer
There are teams in the big that won’t have a spring game

First it won’t be 90. Second anyone who doesn’t actually thinks a practice in front of how many home fans get them prepared for anything is a complete Clown. Whoops that would be you.

You don’t think the crowd gets the young players ready to go on gameday? Rhule said it last year that players were trying to do their own thing and going away from their training because of the people in the crowd. It’s a big deal because none of these guys coming in for the first time have ever played in front of that many people.

But if we copied Penn States approach that would start a whole new Kong thread about Rhule wanting us to be pedos or something

"We will still have the spring game, because I know what it means to this community and the hotels and the bars and the restaurants and the tailgating and all of it," Franklin said. "We're working on that now. We we may do some more events that we're still working through."

Penn State gets it. Dannen does not. He's providing the "do some more events" crap though. Just no spring game. Moving the volleyball game to the same day won't be able to mask over the nose dive that the attendance will take.

I don't think NU wants to do a spring game. We used to but there are new people down there now. I think they look at the spring game as a big pain in the ass. The event brings in a lot of money but not enough of it goes into Dannen's hands.

The further we get with NIL and transfers, the more I understand and appreciate Dabo’s approach. It may cost him his job but IF others would follow it would be a better world. What’s going on is insanity.
We need more people who stand up for what they truly believe in rather than cower to pressure or the desire to get ahead. We used to call that leadership back in the day.

Is that really his quote because that is 100% spot on!

Small-brain thinking.
There are more than 105 players on the roster right now deciding to fight for a spot and risk it rather than leave.
Rhule wants them there. If he didn't, he would send them packing, as he has done for a handful.
It's a disservice to them, especially the 2nd year walk ons who have never played in a spring game. A chance for them to show their stuff in a live game situation and try to make the roster.
Frankly I'm surprised Rhule doesn't want to use a spring game to help determine who belongs.
