Matt Rhule In His Own Words: Leaving the Carolina Panthers & What's Next For Him

sounds like leopole...but I want to at least see baylor give aranda a raise, to say trev tried.

I wonder if Rhule is really out of it though? I mean, maybe negotiations got shaky, sure. But maybe they went back to the table and are still mulling things over?

I sure hope so...

Don't fall for any of the public statements by any of the coaches. Nobody has ANY idea of whether they're saying anything truthful about their job status. We've had coaches deny everything right up until the day they were announced.

You know if he’s putting a gun to our head to get an insane contract I say screw him. Go get an FCS coach and give him the single finger salute. As much as we need to make a great hire, we also need to hire somebody who wants to be here
I don’t think it would be him who would be holding out for an insane contract. More likely the Panthers.

Maybe he does want to be here, he just wants to be compensated for the risk he'd be taking. No reason to tuck tail and hire a FCS coach.

Then we need to be patient and give them time to work it out. Let Auburnand Ole Miss announce their guy and watch the Panthers squirm hoping somebody picks him up. It’s all the more reason for Trev to keep things quiet and be patient. I’ll be pissed if we give somebody a Mel Tucker length of contract

Hiring some random FCS coach in the name of frugality will cost us so much more than a big contract to a good coach ever would.

Frost showed the world how to make a lot of $ from Nebraska for little effort or results. What's to stop the next guy from doing the same?

  • I got fired at 10.35 am, got a call from a coaching search firm at 11.35am
  • I will only go to a place that wants to do it the way I want to do it.
  • i have my own philosophy, I don't want meddling from outside.
  • it has to be a team that believes in my philosophy.
  • I have to learn from my mistakes in Carolina.
  • the team i join could be tomorrow, next year or 3 years from now..I'm in no hurry.
  • he emphasis the 'right fit' again and again.

I think he just sent a message. Make the offer, pay the man.

You're right but knowing his time from baylor, he hates meddlesome boosters. In Nebraska, to be prominent, you have to be associated with the huskers football program. Hence, meddlesome boosters.

When the AD is a former player they also expect to be “involved” …. ie meddlesome

Trev thought he had a done deal with Rhule and it fell apart - he is desperately trying to reengage Rhule and others he backed off on because of his ASSumptions about Rhule

He may be forced to hire Mickey at this point due to the above miscalculations

Hopefully the situation is salvageable

Judging from the interview, Rhule hasn't closed the window either.

Slightly arrogant for someone who's never beat a ranked team and failed miserably at his last stop? A little "my way or the highway" sounding?

Have you ever met a successful coach who wasn't an alpha and wanted everything their way. Don't come at me with Osborne either, because he forced Solich on Byrne because he wanted it done his way.

Yeah, I hear ya. Doesn't mean it's warranted. Still think it was really weird that he turned down Oregon and took Baylor when he did. Which is just to say that I could easily see him turning us down because he didn't feel we were the right fit and it might not necessarily mean we are the problem. He's shown to be a bit of an odd one when it comes to that stuff. My guess is that Baylor was in such a desperate situation, they were willing to give him 100% total control and Oregon wasn't. And we probably aren't either. And he may be looking for a while to find another team that will. He's not exactly Nick Saban where you just say, sure whatever you want, you got it. But it's possible he's acting that way.

At the time Phil Knight was still heavily involved. That is a different kind of beast to the Dr Pepper people in Waco.

Oregon is on it's 5th coach in 14 years. 3 of the 5 have finished in the top 5 nationally, one was only there 1 season and the other is in his first season now. None of them stayed more than 5 years.

This reminds me

Who hired Whipple? Frost or Trev? If its the latter, I don't think him and Rhule are getting along.

I obviously don't know all the inner workings of contracts and such... He was let go from the Panthers so why would NU have to pay them anything? if NU stole him I would understand it but this is not that case and I'm not understanding the dilemma
