Malik to Texas State

He'll have to switch positions. Zero chance he ever lines up under center for us.
Yeah- not sure what we’re trying to do with him. Some wildcat maybe?
If multiple QBs transfer and Thompson has health issues, he could be a functional reserve, but I’d like us to have legit QBs in that room that can do things like throw a pass.

Didn't Arkansas try him at WR this year and he was terrible there too?

I could see him being a return specialist/Wildcat QB, but would be surprised if he contributed much otherwise.

Maybe they had a Zoom call with everyone on Rhule's staff who has recent pro football experience and they convinced him his path to the NFL is at WR.

So, help me out. KONG has been touting Haarberg to anyone that will listen, even when he is behind a walk on? Kong got a bump when the coaches used potential in front of his name. Then we get our starting QB coming back plus a pretty good transfer combined with two guys coming back who both played, their effectiveness is debatable.

So, IF Hornsby is a QB recruit, that doesnt signal well for Harrberg and his potential does it?

New staff that might value different things. (Hopefully). So who knows who the odd man out would be. Hornsby seems to be in the Smothers mold more than Haarberg, whether that means that is their type or they want a gadget QB with more position flexibility than Smothers... Who knows.

Well Hornsby and Casey couldn't be more different in their playing abilities/styles. We seem to have a variety of skill sets in our QBs and on top of that, a bunch of them.

Hornsby doesn’t look like a great QB but he is blazing fast. Nice option to run the option when needed.
Hell, if anything hit the eject button on Purdy and Haarberg and maybe Logan. They have all shown us pretty much nothing and we need a fresh start.
I’d rather have Casey, Sims, Hornsby and Torres as our 4 QBs if we indeed carry just 4.

Agreed. Makes it hard to see what the vision is so it's all a crapshoot until they get a chance.to work with the players and make some decisions. I just hope there is some good development and no playing favorites.

Torres, Haarberg, Smothers, Thompson, Sims, Hornsby. Gotta think at least 2 of Torres, Haarberg and Smothers are gone after spring ball.

add Purdy
At some point, NU has to look at the point of diminishing/non-existent returns. At his point in college football, you probably have to go 5-deep at the QB spot.

Not to state the obvious here, but, typically THE starter will get the majority of snaps, hopefully, a capable backup when a game is decided or if the starter goes down with an injury or is just having one of those games.

Then maybe your 3rd kid is the "QB of the future", (if that even exists anymore.)

You're # 4 or #5 kid should have the types of skill sets where they can show a good picture to the #1 unit as to what opposing teams will come at them with.

So, he should need to be at least an average thrower and runner. Probably can't use just a one-dimensional kid here if you're trying to give the team a good look.

yeah, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Sims will be the starter and CT will be the backup. Maybe Malik gets in the 2-3rd spot.. Maybe Torres and Haarberg hang around?

it all depends on the staff eval this spring.. Logan and Purdy aren't really viable options in my opinion, but I assume the staff will keep the best guys and move the rest along.

Purdy was terrible. Smothers so so while being here 4 years, and Haarberg hasnt been good enough to take even a snap for god awful teams. Those three can all go. Torres may not be the future but he’s young enough that you have to keep him. IMO

I agree Nikki. We know for sure what Logan offers. And Purdy has mostly shown his cards. The other kids have only shown in practice what they may or may not be capable of.

They may well decide between Torres and Haarberg and send the other kid on his way, or spell out the impossibility of his ever playing. If the kid is okay with that, it's time to be a little more direct.

No decent person/coach wants to end a player's dream, but we've moved into a business environment. It's about production, and what can you offer me that another player can't?

As an OT reaction to what I just said about moving players "along" it's why I never wanted to be a horse owner. They're not pets. The money I would spend on them can be spent in much more productive ways than something that is guaranteed to eat like a horse 365 days a year.

Not thinking Casey was a big reason why we lost.
2022
Thompson: 10 games, 63% comp, 2407 yds, 8.8 yds per attempt, 17 TDs vs 10 INTs, 150 QBR
-21 yds rushing (yikes) but 5 TDs.

Sims: 7 games, 58% comp, 1115 yds, 5.7 yds per attempt, 5 TDs vs 3 INTs, 114 QBR
+ 288 yds rushing 1 TD

Thompson had no protection to produce a better average than Sims (no idea on GT OL).

I’m not saying Sims is not capable of doing good things for us, but some may be clamoring for what on paper looks like a downgrade in the passing game.

Rhule has said that he believes Sims is an NFL talent at QB. With such high praise like that, it's hard to imagine anyone else beating him out next year, even Thompson. But we will see.

to be fair, thats an incomplete narrative.

first off, did didn't start 2 games. so 4-5 if you want to be precise since he was injured early in a game to make number 3.
