Malik to Texas State

Rhule has said that he believes Sims is an NFL talent at QB. With such high praise like that, it's hard to imagine anyone else beating him out next year, even Thompson. But we will see.
I just hope Casey is healthy enough to compete.

It’s good anytime we can have a QB playing who earned the start amid competition, instead of by default because there is no competition.

Coming off an injury surgery, new offense he won't get reps in over the off season, and not necessarily the prototype QB required is not a good recipe for Thompson. But props to him for coming back and giving it a go.

Have the coaches said anything about CT at all? I haven’t really paid attention. Part of me thinks they went after a bunch of QBs because I think many people assumed CT would go to the NFL. It wasn’t announced for awhile he was coming back.

It’ll be between CT and sims for sure although I don’t know who has the edge. With Sattefield saying qb run game is going to be a change of pace type of thing I would think CT has shown better pass production so far. But they’ll both be starting in the new system.

My guess is that Malik undergoes a position change and becomes a package QB.

Throw out who was better when, who fits in a pro set offense that Satterfield runs? All the talk about a running QB and how he compares to Martinez is fruitless as the O will be different. Does anyone see Hornsby fitting into the pro set mold? I would think, based on what we know, Thompson and Simms would have the skill sets and inside tracks to win the job. I don't even know where others fit in.

Compared to how Rhule praised the new toy Sims, he was pretty brief and bland with his comments about Thompson. But that’s just reading between lines that may not be there.

I just want us to have a QB who can throw the ball. It’s painful watching QBs who can’t throw a pass.

CT isn’t probably going to be available until fall and even then I question what kind of arm strength he’ll have. There will be a QB competition in the spring between Sims, Smothers and Purdy which I expect Sims to take the lead on. That said, I’m not going to count the other 2 guys out. Smothers is a gamer IMO.

Smothers and Purdy are having off season surgery too.

Smothers is a gamer? When did he show that aside from part of one game against Iowa last year.

I like the kid, apparently hard worker, keeps his head down, stuck to his commitment and faithful to the Huskers through the changes. There was the clamor for him this year, again, when Thompson went down and we saw how that ended up.

Again I have to ask what does the QB position look like under Satterfield and a Pro Set. Tell me what differences there are between what Whips ran and what Satterfiled runs in general? Both are pro set guys but yet Whips was disparaged at many turns. I am not defending him, not sure he had a lot to work with, but people are all optimistic about?

No idea. QB right now feels like one of those positions where it looks like we have depth and talent on paper, but in reality it could be pretty thin this Spring.
The walk on from Hastings might have as good of a chance as anybody to be a fit in Rhule’s offense. I don’t think Purdy’s or Smothers’ surgeries were career threatening like CT’s injury is. CT had gone radio silent since his dad said he would be back. That’s probably not a great sign.

That game against Iowa showed me that he can play at the P5 level when healthy. I don’t think he’s a fit for a drop back pro offense but I think he showed he can be effective in a more RPO based offense. He wasn’t a great fit for Whipple’s offense. When Satterfield says they’ll be “pro style” I smirk a little because multiple NFL teams run a lot of the RPO/ zone read option stuff that colleges run.

I like Smothers but one game against Iowa makes him a gamer and tells you all you need to know about his ability to play big boy FB? If that's the case, if he decides to leave, he should have no problems finding a landing spot.

Where is written that Pro Style can't still be zone read or RPO. It's a read like any other play. So what Pro teams run a Pro Set with RPO and zone read?

It just sounds like Satterfield's O and Whips are going to be closer than some would like. It remains to be be seen exactly but it is sure sounding like it.

And how the hell would you know? You’re 14, living in your mommas basement, and pre diabetic. Lay off the cheeseburgers and potato chips. It’s affecting your judgement. If you need some fruit snacks now and then , I understand.
Because Coach Satterfield recruited Chubba as a sr. in HS and wanted him a lot. You're welcome

Well Purdy’s brother is in the running for NFL Rookie of the Year. It would be smart to give Brock a fresh start and a second chance.
totally agree about giving second chances and more.. sometimes it takes a few times to figure things out. We have a few projects on the roster, nothing wrong with trying to develop them and see what happens I guess.

My guess is he gets spring for reps at QB, if he’s great he continues at QB, if he’s not he is moved to WR in Fall camp when all the other QBs are healthy.

IF Satterfield used more RPO and misdirection than Whip I would be okay with that. I liked Whipple’s pass game but damn there was zero deception in the run game and our play action fakes were awful. I really think your QB needs to pose a run threat in college ball and that’s one of the reasons I’m not ready to write Smothers off. For a guy with so little game experience I thought Smothers handled the job pretty well when he got in games. Purdy got shook but damn he hasn’t played much. Ideally you get guys like that garbage time snaps before they play meaningful snaps.

I agree that Purdy and Smothers would find homes easily if they left. Matt Campbell would pee his pants if he could get Chubba. Smothers would need to go to a team running something more similar to Frost’s offense. There’s nobody more critical of our QBs than our own fan base.

Smothers should contact Rice.

Sims is a QB...Hornsby right now isn't. Odd that we wanted him - then didn't - and now possibly do again. Indication on CT not returning unless Hornsby is okay with being a WR then that's a good sign.

It would be a good place to have a degree from. He probably understands that’s what is going to be the source of his future paychecks.

That said, people are excited about Sims and I’m not sure he’s going to be much better than Smothers. Bigger arm but…..

I take it he’s going the rehab versus surgery route for his tear? I thought he needed surgery.

I thought he was having surgery too. Could be already be rehabbing, after having his throwing shoulder operated on?

Depending on the type of labrum test he had (if that’s right) there could be an option to try to rehab without surgery. That might be his only chance to play this year.

I have a feeling Hornsby may view transferring to Nebraska as a chance to use his skill set where he will get a chance at the next level other than at the QB position. It always seems to happen when schools hire a former pro coach, kids see a former pro coach with NFL connections as someone that may help them get to the next level regardless of position.
