absolutely. why Riley and Banker don't bench #25 is something I don't get. There has to be more to this. Either their hands are tied, they are tentative to do so because of other ramifications that could occur if they did, or they just think he is too valuable to pull despite his lack of effort. having the captain tag doesn't help the coaches either. but at some point, these coaches have to do what needs to be done. Hopefully sooner than later. Next year may be a complete clean slate and those not buying in and busting their hides each practice and games may see the door early on.You and I most definitely agree. My point was if you as a coach see a player giving that kind of effort and you continue to play him, then that's on you.
Buy-in happens when your having success implementing the scheme the coach wants to play. If its a good scheme, verified by results on the field, buy-in is automatic. However, the players aren't stupid, they know if the scheme is putting them in a position to succeed or not. jmhoAgree I think we are starting to see as the year goes and as things come out that it is not a talent issue. Plain and simple these players are not buying into these coaches. Now I'm not 100% sure if that is because they are being stuborn/loyal to Bo or if the coaches are not good and these player know it and are frustrated.
I was watching big red wrap up and it seems like they are hinting at it being poor coaching, play calls, schemes. Just sucks if we have to watch this for another few years.
LOL, concur on the butt kicking.Shrinks are highly overrated. A kick in the ass usually works wonders.
Lack of effort on game day may not be the issue. A guy can go as hard and fast as he can on game day, but if he did not give effort and focus in the practice sessions and in the film and strategy sessions leading up to game day, much of that game day effort is somewhat wasted going the wrong direction, missing a read or an assignment, etc. That kind of lack of effort isn't necessarily readily apparent on game day, but it sure as heck shows up in the win-loss column.

But there are some whose actions seem to indicate that losing hasn't phased them a bit. They don't take it personal
Today's NU team doesn't even hit in practice according to Barrett Ruud and Jay Foreman. Why is that?
Riley and his staff can recruit, teach and put guys into positions to succeed. But until the systemic problems that exist with the mindset and work ethic of a good number of players gets rectified, things aren't going to change.
Yeah your generation really turned us into a bunch of pussies CoolLOL, concur on the butt kicking.
I hate to bring this up but I really think some of it is that today, we have such an entitlement society. Kids who are raised with this perception carry it with them in life in everything they do. And they have been handed things to them without working hard or with the real understanding of what it means to lose.
My kids play both football and baseball. Today it's about getting participation medals instead of earning true rewards. It's a different mind set. I loathed losing. I would be pissed for a week. There are some truly competitive players on our team no doubt. But there are some whose actions seem to indicate that losing hasn't phased them a bit. They don't take it personal. Guys like Jason Peter and Damon Benning did.
I think things have come so easy for this generation in terms of technology etc., it's all about instant gratification. I recall the days when earning something was a goal. You took pride in working hard to achieve something you desired and when you did, you felt incredible. That's a feeling you only get by doing it yourself. You don't build confidence and hunger by rewarding someone for a job they didn't do. Kind of like retaining your captainship and starting position despite playing with little intensity or desire.
I truly believe that is why there is such a disconnect from the players we see today (not all but enough to make a difference) and the players that played on the 70's, 80's and 90's NU teams. Think about it. Today's NU team doesn't even hit in practice according to Barrett Ruud and Jay Foreman. Why is that? How does that prepare them for real contact and getting them reps to take the correct angles during a tackle? How does that prepare them to be mentally tough? How does that prepare them to have that fire in their belly to go knock someone on their butt during a game?
When fans call out a player or the team, we're bad fans. Yet guys like Jason Peter, Winstrom, Mackovicka etc. called out their own team mates and gave them notice; you start busting your butt and making plays or you'll have to deal with us. Where is that now? Name ONE of the current NU Captains who has the fortitude and attitude to do this now with his team mates?

But until the systemic problems that exist with the mindset and work ethic of a good number of players gets rectified, things aren't going to change. I do think there are some young guys who might bring the right stuff and hopefully bring more guys on board and inline. Guess time will tell.
Yeah your generation really turned us into a bunch of pussies Cool
My dad was born in 26 and was a Marine hopping islands to Japan. He raised his kids to improvise and overcome.
Not always the case, but kids who come from military families tend to have a lot of discipline. Both grandfathers were in the Marines, dad was Army and I grew up respecting authority and doing what I was told while having a great work ethic.
Now in no way am I drawing any sort of full scale correlation, but with the lack of major wars in the recent pass and a lower level of households associated with the military from years past maybe some of this is dying out, and being PC and entitlement has crept in. It's an interesting subject.
First of all, I know many players are playing their hearts out. I feel bad for them. The fact is we are still losing. I just have a problem playing players if they aren't playing with passion. I was at the Northwestern game and I cannot imagine a bigger pregame build up with the 95 team there. And they came out flat.
As far as losing, I see one win left - at best.
