I'm so keyed up about our program right now.

It's been a long time since I have been this keyed up and hopeful about husker football. I know there is a lot of football left in the season and it could go south, but we are showing some real growth. I actually sense an offensive identity forming, based on a strong run game.

We have good weapons on offense and both lines have played better than my expectations. Additionally, recruiting seems to be on point, and we have some class at the top again.

I know many will not see it as roses as I do, but it's good to feel positive about what we are doing right now. Felt this way at Suh's pinnacle, but that didn't last long.

I'm always an optimist anyway, but yesterday was the first time in awhile when you could really get the sense that something special may be brewing. It was only the first step, and there's a long way to go yet and the big payoff may not even come this year. But it really felt like there could be something there, and it's not just us optimists that see it.

I was thinking earlier today about whether this or the Michigan State win last year was more important. I think the Michigan State win last year may have been more important because it kind of set us on the path we are on now. But what was great about this one was this was a big game, everybody knew it and treated it as one and looked forward to it for months. And we actually won. It seems like it's been a long time since we could say that.

It's weird how things have changed. Back in 03 I knew our program had slipped when we acted like we had won the Superbowl after beating a good but not great Oklahoma State team to open the season. Now we beat a good Oregon team (I think they'll end up as the third best team in the Pac 12 when all is said and done) and I'm thrilled. I think it's because our feelings in 03 signaled a program in decline, and this win could well signal a program on the rise. We've still got a long way to go to return to our proper place as one of the five or six programs that dominate the sport, but our trajectory is much better than 13 years ago. I'm not saying we go 8-1 the rest of the regular season, but I think we have a better than 50% chance in every game but Ohio State. If we can break that four loss floor and have a strong finish to the recruiting class we'll put ourselves in the position to play in the Big Ten Championship game most years. That's where we need to be.

We don't know how good this win or any other is at this point, just play who's on there and beat em. Keep impoving. But I know I feel more optimistic than I have in years and years.

Totally! It's been really nice to feel proud of the program based on actual evidence! As one of my friends posted Saturday evening, "Hooray! We beat a REAL football team!"

I am cautiously optimistic. Now that we've won against Oregon, my prediction of 8-4 has shifted up to 9-3. Ohio State is a loss, duh, and I just assume there is going to be something in there we shouldn't necessarily lose, but will, plus either a loss to Iowa or Wisconsin. But, looking at our schedule, there is a real chance that we could be 11-1 or 10-2 by the time the season is over. And that is a HELL of a statement about coming back to prominence.

On top of that, now that we've picked up Deiontae Watts (and still lead for Damion Daniels, our THIRD DT of the cycle!), and we look to snag Trajon Cotton, Rayhme Johnson, and now even Alaric Williams, if we finish our recruiting class well inside the top 20, and we should given that momentum, that will put the finishing touches on it. We need to be raking in top 20 classes regularly in order to play a pro style system well, and be able to compete against Ohio State and Michigan.

2017 is starting to look VERY interesting.
