How much does NIL drive playing time

Thinking back to a comment about why Dowdell may have been shouldering more of the load vs EJ someone had mentioned the possibility of NIL commitments.

Looking at Iowa they didn’t have a QB competition in the spring but having seen their 2nd and 4th string perform better than McNamara does the NIL arrangement prevent players from overtaking based on talent?

Were DH’s comments about position groups keying into their “favorites” more a factor of NIL than being actual “favorites”?

I believe people should compete on merit and not NIL commitments.

If we are giving playing time based on NIL commitments, some mutherfvkers need to be fired…. Immediately

That said, I am certain no one with half a freaking brain cell would agree to that

Unfortunately I think it’s becoming like that everywhere. It’s similar to how NFL teams hitch their wagon to franchise QBs for better or worse.

I absolutely think it's played a part, especially at WR.

with EJ, he just may not practice well? was buried behind bad RBs last year, too.

I don't get it but glad we now have a guy calling the shots who does.

It's. UNQUESTIONABLY a factor in any P4 program.

You think boosters are going to pony up hundreds of thousands / millions in order to create "name image likeness" "opportunities" for an athlete only to see that kid sit because he's not that good / is hampered by a nagging injury / refuses to develop?

Hell yes, that’s exactly what I think. I give money to 1890 so they can pay players but I demand the coaches play the best players, which generally seems like what they do.

I am talking about the OP suggesting maybe NIL deals require some guys are mandated playing time from the coaches, to which I say absolutely not or someone needs to be shitcanned for allowing that language in NIL deals.

If anything, the NIL deals should be back loaded based on production so the player is motivated to produce, it just show up and collect a check.

I’d be interested to see what NIL contracts look like but there don’t seem to be too many on the interwebz from what I can see

Part of the reason Saban quit was due to that exact pressure.

If a once in a generation coach, with his unquestioned credibility, is citing having to deal with that kind of NIL playing time pressure as part of the reason he quit, how about the 99% of everyone else who does not have that kind of credibility?

Those guys are not pushing back against NIL contract language, they're pushing back against 1) the very people who landed player "X" for $1.2 million and have a vested interest in seeing that guy on the field as much as possible and 2) the transfer portal which allows player "X" to seek $1.2 million elsewhere in a couple months if he doesn't get his touches.

Should it be a factor?

No.

Do I like it?

Hell no.

Is there a chance it's not a factor at EVERY P4 program?

Astronomically small.

Anybody contributing cash to an NIL fund is motivated by the idea that they are helping their team get better and compete at a higher level. I think it’s rare that an individual essentially procures a particular athlete with a large and targeted donation, cares about that athlete more than team success, and can exert influence over playing time.

Nobody is actually getting return on their crazy investments via add revenue.
