Him and Rhule had the most older white guy awkward excited high five. You could see they both were having a blast.

Yeah, it’s always pretty fun when you put together a plan and it all goes according to plan.

- Let Holgorson make any changes to the offensive coaching staff

Assuming Dana stays IF either McGuire or Satterfield stay, it's because Dana wants them to stay. What's encouraging is that maybe McGuire CAN do the job for the right OC. I don't have a problem with Satt staying as TE coach IF that's what Dana wants but I suspect he'll want a fresh start somewhere else.
Reading between the lines, I can’t help but come to the conclusion that Maguires unit does not respect him at some level. Either he’s not holding them accountable to blocking on the perimeter or he’s not emphasizing it very much. If I am DH, I’d get to the bottom of that. I don’t think any response to those questions is going to be acceptable. Sorry, coach, I’ll do better next time.
From day one they've built up how McGuire is close to the same age as the players. It's hard for someone who came in winning over current players and recruits by being their buddy to suddenly be a hard ass. Dana's good at that role. I kind of like it. Dana sets the tone and McGuire just reinforces it by saying guys this is the way P5 football works. Good cop bad cop.

Maybe we'll get lucky and play Texas Tech in a bowl game. That way when the game is over we can give him a pat on the head and hand his suitcase to his Dad in the parking lot.
I can’t see either one of those guys staying, IF Dana stays. Not saying he’s made some digs at Satt, but a couple comments come to mind. When talking about coaches that fall in love with one player (Fidone), and the playbook being way too thick. The first comment obviously could apply to any of the coaches, but I would say Sat is definitely guilty.
In other words, McGuire is saying, "sorry guys for wasting your effing time the last 1-2 years while we were getting our asses beat on the field."

He belongs as a coach on a middle school team. Running around patting guys on the ass and saying "Let's go guys", isn't exactly coaching. That's what cheerleaders are for.
Garrett's probably a smart, really nice young man. But, can you see any serious football coach like Saban, Meyer, Smart having this kid working with such an important position group?
Coaches get all wrapped up in their playbook, and they forget the most important part - the execution during practice and gamedays. That's what it sounded like the problem was to me. And DH was able to immediately come in and focus on the execution aspect. From the sound of it, it sounded like plays were getting called during games that probably hadn't been practiced in weeks.
Alabama and Ohio State don't have some alien playbook. They run much the same plays as everybody else. But they tend to execute those plays better than anybody else and it makes a world of difference in results.
Let this sink in for a minute. Garrett McGuire, the wide receivers coach, has approximately 4 years of coaching experience - period. Two years at Carolina and is finishing his second year at Nebraska. He had little to no experience coaching wide receivers prior to be named the WR coach at Nebraska. McGuire gets paid $285,000 a year which is a travesty.
Ron Brown, is currently the Director of Player Support & Outreach. He has 30+ years of coaching experience. More specifically, he was the one responsible for teaching wingbacks, wide receivers and tight ends how to block under Coach Osborne. Brown gets paid $186,000.
I would prefer to see Ron Brown coaching tight ends and wide receivers.

I like HCMR, however he should have seen what OCDH saw and made the corrections long ago. IMO he didn't do so because of this friendship with exOCSatt, and that's a problem. Changes should have been made on the oline also. No one should be above the success of the football program.
He is still getting paid from Houston for the next 4 years.

The buyout is offset each year by any current salary (which has to be *at least* fair market value).
He’s getting $4.6M from Houston next year, so it isn’t going to be about money, unless we plan to pay him $5M+. Maybe we could stair step up his salary like we did with Rhule, so if he is still here in 26’ he is making $3M+?
So I wonder what we can do.
Giving him complete control of the offense and offensive staff is a no brainer. For example his WR Coach at WVU is now at UNC and could be looking for a job. If he wants that guy, or any offensive position coach, let him have him.
I also wonder about non-monetary contract incentives. Could we give him a house, country club memberships, etc. Contract law guys would have to help me out with this one. Would that work, or does the value of those things count against the money paid by UH making it pointless?
Yep, thought about his buy-out numbers from Houston as well. Not sure what would work other than the incentives having complete control and allowing him to dump and hire whoever he wants.
Serious head coaches have serious assistants. Look no farther than Matt trying to fit square pegs into round holes. i.e. Satt and McGuire.
Just look at the difference in the NU offense in a 2 week period. Dana has shown to be a gigantic upgrade over Satt, its clear, if Ron Brown wanted that job, NU would be greatly enhanced overall with just the intensity, experience and expectations Brown coaches with.
Tom Osborne always said, "You don't get long runs, especially long touchdown runs without great downfield blocking by your receivers." Case in point, NU hasn't had decent long touchdown runs against even poor defenses. As a coach in any sport, if you don't demand great effort from your players, you won't get great efforts. Kids are gonna be kids.
If the Wisconsin game is indicative of what he can do with our current talent he already has the right conditions. If he is able to go move the ball up and down the field against Iowa and in a bowl game then see below.
-He has a QB with first round arm talent, million dollar head that loves to play football (probably the most important condition)
-He has a HC that will turn that side of the ball completely over to him and get the hell out of the effing way
-He is at a school that loves football, has resources and a great salesman in Rhule that will be able to sell DR/DH combination to ensure he has enough supplemental talent around (particularly if we look good on offense rest of season)
If he thinks an assistant (not related to our QB) is holding things back I think that is about an 8 second conversation with him and Rhule. He has also seen this group of assistants execute his game plan very well in less than three weeks which indicates to me that Satterfield was 95% the problem not anything the assistant where doing at the position group level.
If the rest of the season plays out with Raiola looking like he did last Saturday then I think we are good. With what he would have returning and what the preacher Rhule will be able to bring in selling DH/DR for two years he would have as much or more talent than he has ever had including the year at Okie Lite where they lead NCAA in total yardage.
No way he folds this hand if DR is here as things he can do at NU could be legacy changing for him.

But those days seem over thankfully. If we keep him going forward, I’ll know we still aren’t serious about winning.
This here is a major red flag and NOT a recipe for ‘championship football’. Completely unacceptable.
Recruiting 16-18 year old high school kids might be a high level skill for a “teenage coach,” but we also need to hit the portal every year for grown men and coach up what should already be a top notch skill set. The latter need is where he obviously failed this year. Not sure about his recruiting but we have obviously needed better receivers even if we blame other players (Raiola, the line etc) for some of their failings.
You aren't sneaking stuff in and giving him a house. This is all pretty standard stuff in football these days. This is going to be a somewhat unique situation with a former HC with a big buyout going to an OC. You typically don't give an OC a contract longer then 3 years.
I don't know how we work this out. Houston has the upper hand and there is no incentive for them to negotiate. Kind of like Carolina and Rhule. Only thing I can think of is some kind of huge buyout if he's fired and no penalty for leaving on his own. So he has a guaranteed cushion. Maybe throw in a 4th year? Kind of unprecedented but WTH, why not? We've spent money on worse.
Thanks. Could he try to negotiate a lump sum from Houston. Instead of the $10.2 owed after this year, take $8M now and Nebraska could start paying him $2.5+ next year? Houston could save $2.2M they would otherwise be on the hook for if DH stays an OC.
I think he might stay for not much money since he's got Houston on the hook for a larger bag than any oc and he might still be bitter for being let go. It's probably more about knowing he can run an offense at a very high level again. Pride, ego, revenge fueling him.
It doesn’t have anything to do with money at this point. It’s whether or not Rhule will allow him to truly run the offense, which would include change of staff and scheme.
I guess we won’t know until after the season, but I would be surprised if Rhule sticks his nose into the offense too much. He may be the head coach, but I do think he’s smart enough to see that if something is working, you run with it.
