Hoiskers return to the Vault against Rutgers as 9 favorite

No one thinks Nebraska has NBA talent. The NBA doesn't even have NBA talent anymore! Joking, but have you watched that garbage lately?
The nba is a joke today. Used to be one of my favorite games to watch. I don’t bother with it today. It’s not a team game and they play no defense. And it’s filled with prima-donnas. It went downhill when Jordan left, and I wasn’t a Jordan fan.

Sigh. It seems as if Nebraska can never turn the corner with its basketball program. The past several years have been a big tease. Play well at home but lose on the road. And now we don't even win at home. I get that Rutgers has some NBA caliber talent. But that is my point. Why don't we have NBA caliber talent? Why do we rarely get that kind of talent? I like Hoiberg. I hope we stick with him. He is as good as anyone we would get to replace him. But I do wish we could turn that corner.
And please don't come back at me with, "But we do have NBA level talent!" Well, if that is true then we cannot make excuses for losing to Rutgers on the grounds that they have NBA level talent. The implication is that our loss is "understandable" because they just have more talent than we do. And that is my point. Why do they have more talent than we do? Granted, we only lost by three points but where in the hell has our defense gone? And why is our offense lousy in the clutch? To be a great basketball program requires a consistency of play that we just do not have.
We don’t have NBA talent. Fred’s first 2-3 years there was but interestingly those guys weren’t team players and the wins were scarce.

I posted earlier this season that I thought this was Fred's best roster but you're right about not having NBA players. We don't have an Isaiah Roby. Brice might be one of the best guards Fred has had here, but I don't think he's an NBA player. IMO, we're deeper with big men but our guards leave a lot to be desired. If Essegian can become more consistent, he could end up being an NBA player some day but he needs to work on his rebounding and defense. These guys have got to get things together quickly or they're not going to make the dance.

Our overall lack of quickness at all positions on the floor creates some big challenges in stopping the dribble-drive penetration of whomever we are trying to defend. Due to a lot of the "help" defense we have to employ we become vulnerable to open 3 pt. shooting if our oppenents get the ball to the weak side of the floor. Unfortunately we have witnessed a ton of that lately. There is no easy solution to correct it. Gary is probably our only guy who can match up in quickness in his position on opposing players we face against any BIG teams. To finish at .500 in conference games for the season would be a major accomplishment at this point.

Bryce McGowens, Teddy Allen were excellent players but came here to be “the guy”. Team results sucked even with that great talent
