Hoiberg N

Iowa hiring Ben McCollum while NU gets a 7th year of a coach that has one tourney appearance and terrible overall record. Never should have built pinnacle to put this product in it.
Good thing rebuilds and turnarounds take 5+ years amirite

Iowa was already ahead of NU and fired there coach. There hire just made the gap even bigger. But oh well Hoibergs grandpa coached once upon a time.
I am told every day on this board that it’s unfair to expect results from a new coach until at least Year 3

Seems to me Iowa just set their program back until at the earliest 2028

we'll see Hopefully it's a full on downward spiral.

I get what you are implying. But this is about Hoiberg and going on year 7. Nothing about Rhule going into year 3

hoiberg has already promised to do his best

I don't know what more we can ask for from a P4 head coach
Fred also excels at making some fans feel like he's their buddy.

Denver media reporting that Minnesota is prepared to throw an unbelievable, crazy-go-nuts amount of money at Niko Medved to become the Gophers' head coach. Might even reach $3 million per year!

Hardly anyone was attending Clarkeye games was the biggest reason why they didn’t retain him plus missing the NCAA for the second straight year.

Hoiberg has over 18M buy out and the vault is still filling up with attendance.

Dennen at least going to give Freddy one more year that we have to bare with.

I get why he gets at least one more year. Just frustrating the vault packs the place but nothing ever changes. I know I’m beating a dead horse. But it was incredibly frustrating watching some of the teams in the tourney over the weekend. And knowing NU completely fell apart.

We Husker fans sure like to tear down coaches. I do think Fred needs to bring in better players. The 3 "Bigs" he brought in this year; Berke, Morgan and Meah all had severe limitations. Meah was a wasted addition. I've seen better players at our local CC. Ulis was a non-factor. I thought Rollie and Connor had their moments but obviously could have been more consistent. This team was too dependent on Brice and Gary.

Adding McCollum and Medved makes this conference even tougher. I hope Fred has a plan to get more talent here next year.

Isn’t that on the coach??

Indiana’s new coach should be an upgrade?? I think they will improve.

Yes, I think all three programs upgraded their coaches....but I think DeVries is probably the worst fit of the three. He's never coached at a big-time program with really high expectations. I'm not sure how well he will do at a blue-blood program.

whaaaait. I thought the last new coach they brought in was supposed to make them better? Minnesota too?

bob knight came from army.

I hope Williams does leave A&M. Always liked him and I hate seeing him have to work for Alberts.

But no way Hoiberg is his successor. That’s just Fred’s agent - who’s truly spectacular at his job - generating some buzz (pun intended).

If Trev hires Hoiberg away from us, it will set us back years…, or at least weeks, until a new coach is hired.

Wat? Fred gets paid almost 5 million a year and he’s made the NCAA tournament once. Every other D1 program would’ve fired his ass after year four.

Saw the same mention of Hoiberg to A&M in this article: https://www.cbssports.com/college-b...xit-headlined-by-texas-a-ms-buzz-williams-by/

Also, there'd be real coaching carousel implications if Maryland was able to snag Williams. Texas A&M athletic director Trev Alberts could pivot to a familiar face … Nebraska's Fred Hoiberg.

Not that I think the author of that article knows anything. I could see some unexpected B-level hires happening as more dominos fall and schools get desperate to fill vacancies before the portal closes.

I mean, I could see Trev doing something like that, especially if aTm doesn’t make him hire a firm. Trev isn’t well connected in the basketball world. All that being said, aTm fans will lose their shit if Trev hires Hoiberg. Doesn’t mean it can’t happen, but the fans would hate the hire.

The guy in the article didn’t mention Hoiberg’s huge buyout either. If we got rid of Hoiberg AND got paid a buyout it would be the heist of the century!

I like Fred. I think it would be, financially at least, beyond stupid to fire him. That said, I also think a coaching change could be a positive. He’s got at least one more year to make this work. I’ve waited decades for Nebrasketball. I can wait another year or two.

I think it’s ridiculous that Albert’s would even consider Hoiberg with his record and buy out..

A&M fans would want him fired immediately.

Ironically with ATM’s checkbook, I think Fred could do well there. No coach has any excuse for not being competitive at ATM.

You are probably right. Maybe Fred isn't a good coach, but I also think the Huskers get what they pay for. Nebraska is not going anywhere until they get quality players. Look at this year's roster and then look at the teams that won a game in this year's tournament. There can be only two reasons why this has never happened. One, Good players do not think they can win at Nebraska. Playing for a winner gives them exposure and a chance to move on. Two, Players cannot get more NIL money than they can from other schools. I have no idea how much Nebraska players get through NIL money. How much money was Nebraska offering Chuckie compared to what he got at Louisville? The only way to change this perception is to have a plan of paying for really good players and to have a commitment to do it for more than just one or two years. If not, we fans just need to accept being at best in the middle of the pack in the Big Ten rankings, a double-digit seed in the Big Ten Tournament, getting into the Round of 68 maybe once in a blue moon and never winning a NCAA Tournament game.

I think it’s a combination of the two factors you listed. I think our national reputation makes it so we have to pay more than others, and I don’t think our donor base and administration has fully accepted that we have to offer, around, 20% more money than our competitors to get the best players.

I’m on the fence with Fred. I think he’s a solid Xs and Os basketball coach, but if you’re also unable to find ways to get better talent… are you really a good coach?
