Hail Varsity Interviews Hal Mumme

Talks about a range of topics from his history with Dana, WR screens, and why Nebraska should give the Air Raid a stab.
Coach Mumme makes a good point about reps and getting guys reps during the week, screen game etc and using the right kind of personnel for certain plays. I think Nebraska fans should see some more successful plays coming from the right guys being used for certain plays and should see some more consistency in the box score as well with certain guys
It’s a recipe for consistency that this offense/team needs
Can it get done in three weeks? Jury’s out but there’s enough reps I think that it’ll show. Mumme Bowl this weekend, Go Big Red

Here’s my problem with the “right guys for the right plays” idea. Satt became very predictable by his player subs. It drives me crazy to see 3-5 guys running on and off the field on every play. Put your best guys on the field and leave them there for at least a series. That’s why you recruit guys like Fidone who can be a matchup problem lined up at TE or split out. Put a fullback in there, run power a few times then sneak him out for a short pass. Soooo many things you can do without wholesale substitutions.

I agree, to me the right guys get more reps in practice and run those same plays in games which is why I said you’d see it in the box score
We should see things like target share trends etc
If guys can’t run screens they shouldn’t be on the field or running those plays
Maybe our transfer WRs need to be benched. I’m looking forward to seeing new trends emerge

Amen. It’s like our OC was designed to kill rhythm. I think just changing these wholesale subs will make our offense instantly more potent

I remember when we roundly criticized wisconsins new coach for bringing in an air raid OC at a place that’s only known winning with power football

Look at us now

:(

Wisconsin was also throwing the ball all over the yard to start too. EVERYONE says Dana will adapt his play calling to the guys he has. I hope he watches that 5 consecutive run play series against UCLA and realizes he has the horses to get downhill.

Almost twenty years ago I attended my nephew’s Hawaii game at New Mexico State. Hawaii under June Jones was really good during that time and their offense scored at will on the NM State defense. I remember Mumme as the NM State HC with a long towel hanging around his neck — kind of hard to forget that odd appearance 🤣 - but didn’t know he was already somewhat famous for his offensive system and coaching tree. He apparently has been an example of a coach who didn’t always succeed as a HC but his offenses were consistently very good and innovative. Dana has obviously had some very good teams as HC but he too has probably found the most success running offenses.

Im still trying to find where anyone in the program has said we will only be a finesse, pass first team moving forward. Either way though, if DH can trot an offense out that can put up 400-500 yards per game, and pair it with a real defense, that team could be pretty good.

I believe while they struggle blocking on the edge at times, those transfer WRs are by a wide margin our best WRs. They lack some close quarters foot quickness I think which hinders them in blocking but they’re big and can run. I also think that all of the holding they’ve had called on them has made them anxious about latching on to the guys they’re trying to block. Some of those holding calls were ridiculous.

People say a lot

What they do has tended to be a different story

Our situation is just a tad different than Wisconsin's don't ya think?
I suppose.

They went air raid as Plan A while we are turning to it as perhaps the biggest act of desperation in modern college football history.

Was there a better alternative? One that wouldn't involve time travel in order to make different decisions almost two years ago?

Yes how about trying to run the goddamn ball

No time travel required, just a but a bit of turning back the clock

Totally agree, that's why I'm in a wait and see with Holgorsen. If we throw 40+ times this Saturday I'll be joining you in the torches and pitchforks crew.

Truthfully I was pretty impressed with his OSU offense. Always had an explosive run game. Problem was and will be that since it isn't the identity when 3 yards or even 1 are needed it will be tough sledding.
Everyone was impressed with what he did 10+ years ago while conveniently ignoring the pass-happy rest

Tigers don’t change their stripes

It’s clear Rhule wants a pass-first team and believes that’s what gives us the best chance to win

What do you think the team should be doing? Sticking with Satterfield? Or are you just gonna criticize everything to the max degree at this point?

I think we should be doing what Jay Norvell has done with his generational QB:

Cut his attempts nearly in half, commit to a smashmouth run game and beat people with play action

The result is the best record his team’s had in 7 years and a shot at a conf title

Instead we will probably throw it 30+ times today yet again en route to another blowout loss

Yippee

I agree with all of that. The problem is we're not good enough to do that. Probably because we do such a wide variety of stuff that you never get good enough executing anything. Others say we just don't have the personnel. Bottom line, Satterfield is incapable of coordinating such an offense. I'm not a fan of the air raid either but I'm gonna give it a chance.

With the air raid, at least we'll simplify things. Run fewer plays. Dana is like Tom Osborne in one aspect. He knows his offense. He's seen what defenses try to do against it and knows what to counter with. So we are better off in that regard. And Raiola should be a great fit for the offense. Barney is exactly what you want in a receiver too.

LOL

Give me a break

I'm starting to believe that you do not understand much about football.
"we're not good enough" to commit to running the ball?

"Dana is like Tom Osborne"?

I understand plenty about football. I understand zero about whatever point you think you're making.

I said Dana is like Osborne was in that ONE regard. He knows his offense inside and out. He's seen everything that can be done against it. He already has an easy answer to the zero blitz. That doesn't mean that he can install an offense in a week and a half though. I'm hopeful that the offense shows improvement in each of the next three weeks. We make a bowl game. And next year, Raiola, Barney and Carter Nelson are joined by Michael Terry-- we finally run something simple enough that we can just put our best athletes on the field.

The we're not good enough comment is up for debate. Several football personalities that I respect have said that what Satt was trying to do offensively without a running QB requires a great offensive line, two or three decent in line TEs, et al. for it to work. And we just don't have that. I agree with that because I've seen the results on the field. The TEs are not good blockers. That is obvious. Apparently, you are saying that we should just commit to the run anyway. Just run the damn ball anyway. That was a good idea for this offense this season, but the level of success would have been limited.

the best our offense has looked in 2 years with the same personnel is when we committed to a power run game.

the least talented teams in the country make their hay running the football.

but sure, whatever you say.

we'll have a Miami-esque passing game next year. or the year after that. or the year after that.

there is no way they will do that.. Remember, they are cowtowing (sp?) to Railoa.. everything this head coach and staff does is 100% centered around DR and making sure they focus on him and his skills and on and on and on.. to hell with the team and actually winning something, but we are gonna do all kinds of monkey maneuvers to get a passing guy down here to unscrew this mess because we want to show we are dedicated to this 1 effing player.

If I was a member of the team, I'd be more than pissed..

And to all the fans that Rhule told great stories about running the football and fullbacks and all that stuff that would actually make the team a better and more competitive team? Well you all got told a bunch of horse crap.

They aint gonna run the ball, and we don't have the horses to do either.. we kept on a crap Oline coach, and crap RB coach, and recruited mostly crap running backs and frankly it is sad what the running game at Nebraska has become.

No we going air raid? that's about as un-Nebraskan as you can get.
