Grass is done, ready for camp

A few years ago I noticed an interesting phenomena. Normally I drive around in a dirty old farm truck wearing a ratty Carhart shirt and ball cap. At stoplights women would glance over at me and quickly look away. Then in the evening I would be cleaned up, sport shirt, driving my wife’s Lexus RX350. Totally different reaction from women at stoplights….. I literally laughed out loud to myself when it happened time after time. Same guy inside the clothes. Same balance sheet.

Unrelated, but, I've always said, really old guys with real money that do crazy shit are considered "eccentric."
Really old dudes without money, who do crazy shit, are just considered "nuts."

scarlet, don't agree with this either. For one thing, I've owned my home since 1991, and my home is plenty nice. I'm not a lazy guy, I could do yardwork, if I wanted to, but it actually helps both my neighbors. One financially, the other, so he doesn't have to invest in a nice snowthrower. As far as I'm concerned, it's a win-win for all 3 of us. I choose not to do lawnwork.

Unless you live in a HOA, its nobody's business how your yard looks as long as its mowed on a regular basis. You can't show any city ordinances that says your home or yard has to be well manicured, because some people live in dumpy neighborhoods.

My older brother, until @ 10 years ago was in charge of all the grounds at Lowry AFB, Colo. He had every yard looking immaculate, but its something that he truly enjoys. I don't. Plus, it was his job.

In my world, when a man gets to a certain point they can do as they choose and not concern themselves with thinking about keeping up with the Jones'. I never worried about the Jones', because a lot of them are dead ass broke trying to impress people.

I know I'm a total outlier here, I've never given a crap what people think about me.

I pay my neighbor $ 30.00 a week to mow and weed eat and he has the option of using my riding mower if he chooses.
I’m mowing about 3 acres with a 42” rider this year. I planted 2 acres of trees on the north side of my house 2 years ago and can only mow close enough with a rider. I could probably use a commercial zero turn but my yard is on a slope and I’m afraid I would scalp too many areas.

My wife kept saying I should hire a lawn service. Late last summer I finally agreed to get the spraying done. First spray this spring they killed a 6’ tall cherry tree and a dogwood shrub….. I’ve got a circle in my front drive planted with knockout rose shrubs. The dumbasses sprayed a couple of broadleaf weeds in the midst of the roses. 😕

You keep disagreeing people that are saying people should maintain their lawn and keep it looking nice - but then it sounds like you are keeping your yard and sidewalks looking nice 😂
I don’t think you are the outlier, just because you don’t enjoy it or do it yourself, you still see the value in keeping your place looking good!
My yard does look nice, when we get lots of rain. But, my yard is on it's own.

I've just never been very accepting of someone trying to tell me what to think or what I'm expected to do based on some societal norm. None of us maintain the same standard in different areas of life. People should run the life that suits them.

I mow about 1/2 of my 2 acres with a Deere X758 4x4 and 60" deck. Steep slopes in back so no 0-turn for me. Still takes me 1.5 hours. I can't imagine doing 3 acres with a 42".

We’re on our 3rd Jeep Overland now. The last a Lexus we had had too many little problems from the factory and we could buy an Overland edition Jeep with more comfort options for 10K less. We also were 2 hours from anybody who could service the Lexus. Our Jeep Grand Cherokees have been GREAT vehicles. 27mpg and quieter IMO than our RXs were.

It’s an half day deal for the tree plot . One of the reasons we have such a good balance sheet is that I’m cheap. A commercial mower is over 10k. I bought a used 42” Snapper rider for 1500 from a mower repair friend and I leave it parked in the trees so I’m not dragging weed seeds back in to my main yard.

I did look at a 7’ finish mower for my Kubota that would fit down the main rows but didn’t pull the trigger. The main time consumer is mowing closely between the trees.

Well now that’s different story.. At least someone is taking care of it for you correct..

That’s the most important thing whether you own your home or you happen to rent the home…

At least keep the Fvcker mowed..

In the car example it means that it’s not about the car being nice but rather you keep it clean and well-maintained regardless if it’s a crap box or a Bentley. If you live in a crappy house, you keep it clean, yard picked up and mowed. It’s personal pride in your things which reflects in other areas of your life too.

(I like the Dave Ramsey-ism by the way 😁 )
I used to be a fan of Dave Ramsey. Agree with the debt free, totally disagree with his growth mutual fund theory.

But, overall, the dude has helped a lot of people.

Definitely has helped a lot of people - are you in the camp of more conservative funds as a person ages?

I don't have a penny in any stock or mutual fund. For many, I imagine the conservative approach is the best way to go. You could start a thread of Financial Philosophy and I'm sure a lot of guys have some really good ideas that have worked for them.

Back in mid 2000's, my brother had the 4 TOP RATED mutual funds in the country. Had the majority of his wealth involved in Dodge and Cox, Lehman Brothers, Bear Stearns and AIG. I don't have to tell you what happened to him in 2008-2009.

**Edited** I take that back about the stock. I did buy 3,000 shares of a gold junior mining company about 6 months ago. 7,50 for my wife, 7,50 for each of my 2 youngest grandsons, and 7,50 for my son to do the transaction. Bought it at .33 and it's bounced up and down between .41 and .60. Not a big deal, my little guys have nothing but time on their side.

If it goes to zero, oh well. Other than that, since the invent of High Frequency Trading, I want no part of the financial game.

Some of the WORST financial advice I’ve ever heard came out of his mouth to a caller about a real estate deal. It involved a couple buying a lake house as their primary residence and his in-laws were going to GIVE them half the money. This was back when interest rates were under 3%. He discouraged them from doing it because they would have had to borrow like 30K. Wtf Dave!

How in the hell do you keep up with this inflation not being investigated in stocks and mutual funds..

I know you handicap horses but you can be that good.Laughing

To be honest, we keep about 10K in cash. The rest precious metals and Bitcoin, plus, if you're debt-free there's not a great need for alot of cash.

I bought gold at 300.00 an ounce and silver at 4.85. Got lucky and bough BTC at .08, bought more at 300.00, 600.00 and 1,200.

Other than that, I love precious metals in that they have no counter-party risk. Not concerned with increases in value, moreso the idea of protecting what we have.

Different strokes for different folks. If something is working for you, kudos.

The average long term return on stock funds over time is north of 8%. HISTORICALLY real estate returns roughly 5%. Cash equivalents normally under 3%. The keys are your time horizon and risk tolerance. People who get whacked in the market are normally the ones trying to time the market or give up when it hits a rough patch.

Holding cash assets over the past 3 years has been especially devastating due to inflation. One risk component many people ignore is inflation risk. We’re holding roughly half in real estate and half in the market right now with virtually zero cash equivalents.

Horses have been very good to me. I've never wanted to be the richest guy in the cemetary. By contrast, my oldest brother squeezes the quarter so tight, the eagle screams. My son and daughter are debt-free and very comfortable. They are a chip off the old block, i.e. precious metals, and BTC and enough cash on hand for a few months. Of course, gold, silver and platinum are always liquid if needed. I love to give money away to my grandchildren. Money they have, but can't touch. LOL My 4 youngest are 10, 5, 2, and a newborn, so really, what do they have to spend money on at this juncture of their lives?

I think a husband and wife reach a point where, how much do you really need? Remember, this is coming from a 69 year old man, so my battle has already been fought, it doesn't apply to those in their 40's and 50's. Hopefully, one day it will be their option.

I never wanted to wait until I'm 80 years old and my kids are pushing 60 to give them a windfall. If we want to give them each 10 ounces of gold for their birthday, we do it. Please understand, they've shown over the years that they are prudent with their money. They're not gonna go and sell 20K in gold I gave them and buy some fricking novelty.

My daughter owns 2 decent sized daycare centers. One is licensed for 54 kids, the other for 80 kids. Do you have any idea how much money you can make with 134 kids a day in daycare? Obviously, my daughter keeps much more cash on hand for payroll, etc, and costs associated with running 2 businesses.

Plus, the government is ridiculous in the amount of grant money they make available.

I feel sorry for those younger parents that have to pay daycare. True, they get their child care credit, etc, but the money has to come of their pocket during the year.

dingle, i like your plan because it works for you. I'm convinced the Fed Reserve is not concerned with inflation.

At some point they will lower the interest rate, and then the devastation begins.

My methodology is not for everyone. I respect anyone's beliefs in doing whatever it takes financially to get ahead in this world. We live in such a tough environment, if guys are able to maintain stability and make some steady headway, they are far ahead of the game compared to 90% of the population.

The problem is, he's the same guy who talks all the time about going bankrupt at a younger age due to real estate mistakes.

I think every person has a different situation, and any cookie cutter approach for the masses is ill advised.

Blue Grass does not like summer heat. It is native to the mountains of Kentucky where the summer heat is not bad.
It is actually native to Europe. Early settlers brought it over and it thrived in Kentucky. It is now naturalized.

Dave Ramsey. The guy who makes millions off giving common sense advice and then buys a giant extragavant house with statues and whatnot. Love he's tied in with churches too. Brilliant.

All while people should really be idolizing Warren Buffet, who actually practices what he preaches and didn't spend millions to buy a giant castle to show off his wealth.

My wife was sort of a gold digger and now she makes 3-4 times more than me. 🤣. Now I know for a fact that there’s at least one 66 year old guy hoping I die so he can dump his crabby wife and court mine. 🥴

I’d suggest going to the Grass Pad..

One key having a nice yard is having irrigation system..
That's key, but if we're not in a drought a close second is setting your mower as high as it will go. Set it high and do not mulch. Grass clippings are a natural fertilizer. And taller grass will maintain moisture better and crowd out potential weeds.

Show me a weedy lawn and 90% of the time its mowed at about the same height as a golf green.
