Grass coming to Memorial Stadium after 2025 season

Sam McKewon on Nebraska moving to grass:"The reality is Iowa State, Michigan State, Penn State...They all have grass. And it's been a while since I've been to Iowa City, but they have nice turf. And Penn State has nice turf. Michigan State's is ok. Purdue's is a little messed up because they use a bermuda grass that they use on a golf course...Nebraska probably won't be using that...I think it's a great idea. They'll use a blue grass or whatever they have. It does cost more. Maintenance cost - that's not going to be easy. The heated field, the Packers have that....Nebraska is going to have to navigate the high school championships and they are going to have to chew on whether they want a bunch more events in the stadium. For example, could you really have a Volleyball Day on August 31st if you're playing 5 days later and that thing is chewed up to heck. But beautiful grass surface, there is nothing better."

Attended the game at South Bend, I didn’t notice the grass field or didn’t think too much about it.. What fascinated me more was all the red in that studuim and how the ND fan’s sold their tickets for a pretty penny. I believe we paid $110 a ticket and there was 4 of us..

Have a picture in my living room of the stadium in the end zone looking toward Touchdown Jesus in the back round..
I was there too. The thing I remember the most was the incredible number and length of TV timeouts. They really seemed to affect the tempo of the game. Plus, between all the TOs and going into overtime, it seemed like a 4 hour game (was 3:19 actually). ND had that exclusive contract with NBC at the time. What I didn't know at the time was that was the future of college football and all the games take forever now.

According to Dannen, grass won't be installed in Memorial Stadium until the stadium renovations are completed in 2028. In the mean time, new turf will be installed after spring ball next year.

I wouldn’t get too flustered about proposed renovations as Dannen does not have a comprehensive plan. The proposed renovations are too fragmented and given that it’ll be mostly funded by private dollars a lot can change.

One thing about this is like others have noted. Might want the end zones to have white borders all around otherwise players will have a harder time distinguishing the end zone from the out of bounds. ALA Purdue's Field with the black ez and border.

Maybe it won't affect them but it did Purdue's own players.
Red N zones are cool. If the Packers can keep the grass fields decent into Jan, they should have no issue in Lincoln until Nov and Dec.

No I agree, I like the red ez. It's the red out of bounds that "might" create an issue.

Just recalling a Purdue receiver who thought he was inbounds in the ez but was actually out of bounds since both are black.

But maybe it won't bother anyone.

Agree. Extending the red past the out of bounds line is not a good idea in the end zone.

"Have you pretty much stopped trying in your marriage, does the thought of having to put in some thought for your "best friend" push you close to suicide...let us help you...For the Husker fan that already has a Husker golf bag, husker tees, husker putter cover, husker iron covers, husker golf glove...comes the Husker Field Turf!"

You can hang it next to your autographed Tanner Lee jersey and your Scott Frost action figure. Really makes you reminisce about the last 15 years of pure dog shit football…

We should install grass immediately in my opinion. It was decided to install grass last year. But apparently it takes 2-3 years to make the change? I guess I don’t understand something. Are they not sure how to do it right? Experimenting with different techniques? Can’t they just go to somewhere like Penn State which has a similar climate and ask, “How do you guys do this?” and then copy that?
I am probably just impatient to see this happen. I have been wanting this for years. Nevertheless, once they made the decision to do this I think it was well within their power to have it in by Fall 2025

How many Husker fans saved the newspaper from the day Frost was hired? You know that was a big one.

UNL has one of the best turf management programs in the country. It has been noted many times over the years how good our baseball grounds crew is. They can get this done if they really want to.

Well my guess is they don't want to get ahead of the stadium upgrade...if any. If you are going to remodel then look at how to do it right and what makes the most sense. Come up with a comprehensive plan and be professional about it

I agree! I do not understand all of the foot dragging on this. It is a fvcking grass field. Grass. Tear up the old turf and foundation. Then do whatever you need to do to the underlying soil to make it suitable. Drainage, slope, new soil etc... Then plant some fvcking grass, fertilize it and water it. This is not difficult for folks we already have working for us.

Personally I would lower the playing surface buy 1-3 feet to increase sideline visibility issues. May not be possible. Drainage is going to be very important
