Gbayor gone

Good run stuffer. Kind of seemed like a liability against the pass. Will be interesting to see if he grows into a more well rounded player.

You did it again. If we play young guys and they win 1 game, then the next season you have a bunch of players who have never done anything and are losers, right? Do you see that this would not fix the very problem you are complaining about?
All the old guys you are complaining about were once playing as young guys.
Last year and this year we did play some young guys, quite a few actually. One is in the portal.

This has nothing to do with doing things the “right way” morally. Its just completely impractical.

Im not trying to argue with you and I get your premise, and as I said I agree regarding a few guys. I just think its impractical to do and would leas to the same issue you dont like. Does that make sense?

Fully agree on buying players in the portal. We should also be finding ways to illegally funnel big ten money into NIL to buy players, and if we arent dannen isnt doing his job.

I hate it. I hate what cfb has become and honestly my fandom is going to continue to lessen. But it is what it is.

I can't speak for him but IMO the one variable that we are missing is that the "young players" are more talented than the older players in most cases. Thus all they are missing is experience. When they get it the assumption is a second year V9 will be better than a 5th year Gbayor. Or a second year Barney will be better than a 4th year "random WR". Or a 2nd year Caleb Benning will be better than a 5th year Buford or Gifford.

I THINK that's what the coaches and the op are banking on. By playing them young you MIGHT sacrifice the initial year and gain a better player for the next 3. Where as if you stick with the older guy you inherit the same "loser mentality" (hate to call it that). As well as kinda stunting the growth of a very talented first year guy with big potential.

I think there is a middle ground somewhere in there and it's a very slippery one. I do wonder though if Rhule privately wished he would've done it the other way now.

Sucks for him but sadly I think some will end up with these kinda stories. The grass isn't always greener and you will have to compete REGARDLESS of where you go. Mizzu is an SEC school. Just like at Nebraska they will have some talented guys there. Maybe even more than we do. They will also bring in guys to compete. Sometimes the devil you know is your best opportunity. Providing he left on his own and actually had a choice at Nebraska...which I have no clue.

Hope he lands on his feet

Assuming Gbayor had stayed, do we get Trent? Maybe Gbayor is more of a rotational role player at the B1G/SEC level.

I was wondering why Missouri even took him to begin with. I usually do not worry about transfers. For many years, the Big Red would replace average starters or even good starters who ran out of eligibility with people who were just as good or better. A lot of times it comes down to just getting people out of the way and more practice reps for young guys. Look at what is going on with Ives at RB after what's his name left for Kentucky.

Interesting to hear Barthel talk about Dowdell. The kid was a scout team scrub at Oregon and apparently wasn't getting much psn coaching. Didn't really pop at NU in the spring, then came on in fall camp. The kid got his opportunity, and that turned into a load of cash from KY. I think Holgerson likes Ives because the kid can catch a ball out of the backfield.

JC, the takes here just get dumber and dumber. Dowdell was a true freshman at Oregon and earned playing time as a true freshman. His career has gone about as well as you can expect so far from a mid-tier talent.

We had our boxers in a bunch about Gaybor and Princewell leaving, but as it turned out we replaced them with proven players who are better. So goes College Football 2025. I wish we had gotten another running back though.

Yeah we hope that is the case with Gbayor and Princewell but are we sure yet? I guess we have to see how it plays out to be absolutely sure. But I do like the guys we have for sure. If I'm being completely honest I'd still love to have Princewell on the current roster.

I think you definitely have a point about us getting Trent. If I was guessing I would have to guess no. We probably wouldn't have gotten him.

I guess I've just kinda become cautious when it comes to thinking the replacement is always better. Do we truly know that Trent is better yet?

You very well could be right. Best case scenario we have upgraded at all those positions. I still wanna see it though.

Ives > Dowdell
Trent> Gbayor
OU transfer > Princewell

All that we seem to easily pass off as upgrades. But until it plays out on the field I'll kinda reserve judgement.

I actually wanted to see us upgrade in the secondary. As much as I love guys like Buford, Singletary and number 7 I truly am not sure they are at the level we need to play at top BIG level.

Would've liked to see another RB and another interior DT. Big guy 6'3+ 300+ guy to be exact.

Either way these things fit like puzzles. Hopefully our guys have all the pieces to fit this thing together.

Dowdell>Ives. But KY offered a fat bag. Mitigating - Holgerson likes Ive’s ability to operate in the receiving game.
Trent>Gbayor. Trent was defensive POY in his conference. Gbayor’s early departure from Mizzou question his basic judgement.
McCullough=PWill. Both on freshman AA teams. PWill had a sophomore slump and MaGahee ate into his reps. MCullough got moved off the edge at OU, had some injuries but still had some splash plays. I thought he might play the Rover position at NU. But I like him and Javin as OLBs in a 3-4 look with Shavers and Trent on the inside.

Dowdell is more of a one trick pony in my opinion and Ives & others may be a better fit for what Dana wants to do. Not saying that NU didn't want Dowdell to return, but he's gone now. Dowdell is better as an inside runner, runs hard, but seeks contact and doesn't avoid it. Can get tripped up fairly easily. I don't look at him as a receiving threat or a guy who could break a long run. Ives is a big kid, great athlete. He won't be as good as Dowdell in some areas, but I bet he's better in others.

Bit too early for me to say for sure. But if I had to guess I would go..

Dowdell>Ives (run game) pass game I'd go Ives.

Gbayor=Trent..I think Gbayor is better than he's given credit for. Especially if we are considering special teams. I think most consider Gbayor a 2 down LB and as I watch film of Trent I think he will be the same thing here. I don't some elite athlete. To me he's more of a tackle to tackle guy and probably similar athletically to Gbayor as well.

McCullough vs Prince is extremely hard for me to judge. Watching film they looked like completely different kinda players. Pass rushing? I'd go Prince off the edge. If we are covering and dropping back I'd go McCullough. Just depends on how they ate used.

I honestly don't think it's a slam dunk either way with any of these guys. I think they are closer in talent level than many wanna believe.

This is probably a good thing. He is a holdover from the full on losing mentality. I've said this for weeks that we need most of the Frost era guys out of here. They bring losing and we need to rid the program of that.
Michael Jordan's first 3 seasons were on losing Bulls teams. They should have gotten rid of that loser.

He immediately led the Bulls in points, steals, and even rebounds one of those first three seasons.

But thank God for Gbayor's 1 sack in garbage time when Indiana when beating the breaks off us all day.

Wasn't it Dowdell who trucked Sanders into a cast?
I know I'll get massacred for saying this, but I hated that play. Any one of a dozen NU backs over the last 25 years would've scored on that play, but Dowdell wanted to run over the only guy between him and the endzone. He was great at getting tackled by one guy. Not a fan.

Agree on the ability to score BUT … in the context of the game with kid talking mad trash and the absolute bitch-slapping the Huskers were doing it only added to the type of game it was. Loved it and it was my favorite play due to the context I mentioned.

Surprised so many people still talk about this play given it took place in a meaningless game against a big 12 opponent in Sept

I don’t think I’ve been in the camp as a meaningless game, I know some throw shade at the Buffs last year. Both things can be true I suppose. I doubt they would have had the record they did playing B1G each week. It was still a huge win for where we are currently at in our program. Won’t make the history books as a great win, but it sure was in my memory bank given the struggles of the program.

The good news we can hit the portal and bring in what we need. I think Rhule is actually pretty good at selling this. Deion flipped a ton of their roster and is doing just fine.
dion sanders is 8-10 in b12 play and 13-12 overall in his two years at cu.

you are obviously part of the vast majority of NU fans who correctly assess that game as meaningful

If you're tweaking the noses of the NU fans that love to dismiss Deion as a terrible/irrelevant coach and that are therefore a bunch of hypocrites for acting like our win over them was a huge deal - sign me up. The guy lives rent free on this board.

More aimed at anyone who claims our win over them was meaningless (it wasn’t)

Agree with the last sentence whole heartedly

Nice win versus meaningless win. Let’s not get it twisted. It was a nice win only in the sense that it was a revenge game from the previous couple of games against that team and it was great to shut the mouths, if only temporarily, of all the sports honks that were riding Deion Sanders nut sack.
