Game day!! GBR!!

— Linebacker Jimari Butler said he feels better this fall physically than at any point in his time at Nebraska.

— Butler said that he, MJ Sherman and Chief Borders have been going to defensive line coach Terrance Knighton for advice on pass rushing. Butler said he feels more explosive as a pass rusher this season and that the defense plays into his strengths.
“I’m everywhere, I’m doing everything,” Butler said. “(The defense) gives me a way to get to the ball in ways that I never could imagine.”

— While Butler clearly fits the physical profile of a JACK linebacker, he said Matt Rhule and the coaching staff didn’t mention specific positions to him when re-recruiting him out of the transfer portal.
— Junior linebacker John Bullock said his move from defensive back to linebacker in the offseason has been nearly seamless. He gained about 15 pounds to make the move and has been working out at both the WILL and MIKE spots.

— Bullock has yet to play a defensive snap at Nebraska, but has put himself in position to do so this season. So far, the Omaha Creighton Prep graduate is also working on every special teams unit that Nebraska has so far installed.

— Bullock’s brother Alex, a sophomore wide receiver, has also put himself in the conversation for playing time this season. The older Bullock said he has always believed in his little brother.

“He’s always had the ability, it just takes somebody to see that,” John Bullock said. “I’ve always believed in him. He’s a great player, a great leader and he’s getting better every day, every year.”

Talking to guys who lived as blackshirts before deciding what to do. It's called respect for the tradition. Who gets blackshirts?
So, who are clear starters vs. who are guys that are mostly part of a rotation?
Clear starters (from what I've seen/heard/can cobble together)

Nash
Sherman

Hartzog
Gifford
Heinrich (maybe)

Just hand them out the way you want. Some won't be happy regardless. Most tedious discussion every camp.
Even when the D has stunk (and it has been stinky), people refer to them as the Blackshirts. The question is whether White thinks awarding a particular practice jersey color prompts to person receiving it to engage in more disciplined play. If this is not the case, either end the tradition and choose a different color for practice or simply award them to starters and continue the tradition. At the very least, there are at least 7-8 kids whose play is worthy of the Blackshirt tradition as we know it. This staff talks a lot about "the standard". Players that achieve that level on D are worthy of a blackshirt.

I think Gunnerson is in good shape for the 3rd DL spot. I also think Tommi Hill has a good shot at one of the DB spots. And I wouldn't exactly pencil Heinrich in to start.

Just go back to what a blackshirt is. The starting defense. Pretty easy.
Modern coaches don't consider just the starting 11 "their guys" anymore. In the modern game, there are 3rd down pass rushers, nickel backs, and other guys who may not start but the coaches consider just as critical to the defense's success. I doubt the tradition will ever go back to just the 11 starters as modern coaches just don't see that way anymore.
