Fire Foley.

We'll see if Rhule is going to be different than folks like Callahan and Frost. If he's built different, cares about the success of the program and values all those young men in the locker room over his buddy, then we won't see Foley anymore. If he's a big talker and has fake standards then Foley will be around all season. A champion lets him go this weekend, we'll see.

A scared coach makes immediate knee jerk reactions to try to save their jobs. Hope it doesn't affect our recruiting of specialists

It's not knee jerk, that would be after week 1. We're at the point where we can't plan for field goals and are almost at the "we can't punt" stage, it's time for him to go.
Some of these guys prioritize their buddies over the program, it's their fatal flaw.

Yup! I doubt if he will be fired mid season but if he's back next year I'll be extremely disappointed in HCMR. No we you can justify bringing him back after what we seen from our special teams the last couple years. Easily the worst hire made by HCMR. I THOUGHT it would be Satterfield and I'm still not sold on him being anything more than average but Foley I'm completely sold. It's time....

Satterfield is not the right fit, but he isn't the complete and utter failure that Foley is. Like I said, if Rhule is a champion then Foley will be doing analyst work this week and someone else will be on field coaching. We'll see if he's got that dog in him or if he is like the other failures who've stolen a paycheck from the university the last couple decades.

Running backs coach might be a close second.

Players who constantly fail typically get benched and replaced. Why would a coach be any less accountable?
Foley is a hindrance to us winning. Unacceptable if we expect to win games.

I actually don't feel the same about Barthel. I think we have a pretty "average" RB room and he's getting the best outta them. EJ looks better, Rahmir looks better, Dowdell compared to spring Dowdell is night and day. So I really don't feel the same about him.

NOW I will say he needs to recruit at a higher level. No reason in the world we shouldn't be recruiting NFL calibur RBs at Nebraska and he hasn't. I do like the kid coming from Mizzu in current class tho. Maybe he's it.

I'm gonna let the year play out for Sat. I'm just not sure. I admittedly didn't like the hire to begin with because being in South Carolina I watched a ton of USC football and Sat imo was bad there.

However I gave him a clean slate coming to Nebraska and no matter how hard I try I can't blame last year on him. In fact I have to give him some props for what he had to deal with and how he did.

But NOW he has a "dude". Albeit young Raiola is gonna prove one way or the other within the next year or so whether he's a good OC.

We’ve got a few posters call for the heads of multiple staff members and we’re 5-1. 🤔

Same posters were calling for heads over “close” win with UNI and for the finish to last year. We are 5-1 with our best start in 7 years - I’m convinced regardless of our record and even if we were playing championship level football there would be someone on the staff people would want gone.

I agree that Foley is not worth his salary through these 6 games but also trust Rhule to make the best decision for the team. If that’s at the end of the season (as I suspect it will be) it doesn’t mean he’s soft, or doesn’t care about winning, it means he knows when the right time is.

The guy that drilled Buschini should have been picked up by one of our back shield guys. There was some ass chewing of those guys after that.
I haven't gone back and reviewed that block but it looked like they got outnumbered on our left side. The protector took the outside guy when generally you are taught to take the inside rusher with a more direct line. To be fair, the inside guy was a bit delayed.

Likely, without counting, there should have been a protection adjustment call on that.

Obviously these people want top win, everyone wants to win, but their egos get in the way and think they're smarter than everyone and it will work out. Or they value their relationship with said coach more and don't want to be the bad guy. It was the same for Callahan, same for Frost...these guys wanted to win, but they hired buddies instead of good coaches and they got canned. It'll happen to Rhule too if he doesn't prioritize the program over any 1 individual. You think Saban would have got to this point? He'd have had the locks changed.

So Saban fired every assistant that wasn’t meeting muster in the middle of the season?

Sh## happens awfully fast. I never played in college but I played against some guys who were All Big 8 at Nebraska. You take a half of a step the wrong way and you're pretty much screwed against P5 talent. I haven't watched any replays and really don't care if I do. I leave the analysis to the "experts". I don't know if scheme is some of our problem on punt protection or if it's dudes or the grey matter between the dudes' ears. I'm a wait until the end of the season and then let the head coach evaluate his assistants. I think calling for somebody to be fired in the middle of the season is counter-productive.

Well if I'm being honest I don't think a coach should be exempt from being called out or even fired because the TEAM has a good record. Seriously subpar coaching is subpar coaching. If the standard is the standard with players shouldn't it be the same with coaches?

Im not sure it's something that occurs a lot but you should always be aiming for better. When someone isnt doing their job you don't say "well we are still winning so let's keep them on" imo. The Foley case is borderline a no brainer. We are CLEARLY winning IN SPITE of our special teams failures. To see an obvious fault like that and not attempt to correct imo would be criminal. You can't tell me you are "for Nebraska" and decide to keep that guy on (if the year finishes like it's been so far).

Other than him I don't see anyone id consider fireable yet. Not a big Sat fan but his first year was a freebie for me. I just think he's average but he isn't near Foley category imo.

I just don't think you stand pat because you are winning. Correct your mistakes imo.

Rhule knows exactly why things are the way they are with special teams problems. He has said “we have the right guy to fix the problems”. I’ll believe him and logically look at the screwups without calling for Foley’s head

Exactly. It's not rocket surgery.

Back to the thread title. Foley should not be employed as a the coordinator. If you want him as a rah rah morale guy fine. Pay him 100K and let him ride into the sunset. ST needs to be shored up ASAP. The schedule is there to win a lot of games and still be a dark horse. The only real long shot is OSU.

Rhule apparently disagrees with your assessment and we're paying Rhule 7 figures to make those decisions. Rhule said "we have the right guy in place to fix the problems". Maybe he changes his tune on about January 3rd...

I tend to be an optimist. But I do agree Foley is not getting the job done. There is a difference in execution break down and complete incompetence. I like Foley but sheesh every aspect of special teams has struggled. It is frustrating watching Texas State line up for a 45yd plus field goal and it looks just routine for them. And NU is to the point they should go for every 4th in field goal range just for a shot for some points.

Stay optimistic my friend. Our extra points this past game looked very routine and Hohl did a nice job on his kickoff after Buschini got dinged up. Buschini is a little slow to the foot sometimes but they’ll fix the protection issues. I’m really not all that worried about special teams. This isn’t Callahan bad problems. It’s different individual guys making individual mistakes randomly. Gotta give some credit to Schiano too. The guy has lots of cred for his special team kick block history. It’s a chess match on every play.

I guess we will see what Rhule ends up doing. He's called Foley out multiple times this year indirectly and I doubt he is ever going to stand up at a presser and say "Foley is doing a ****in terrible job". I guess if this is the hill you want to die on, but you defending Foley is comical. Like someone else said. Satt is head-scratching at times, but he isn't potentially ruining games. Foley's group is. He is lucky dudes like Nate Boerkircher busted their ass and saved a touchdown to cover his ass.

Really what does he bring to the table. Who has he recruited? If his unit is the worst on the team and he isn't recruiting then why is he here?

I remember Callahan going on his show and bragging about getting to keep Kevin Cosgrove too. It cost him his job and he wasn't right just because he was paid to make the decision. Come on folks, Rhule isn't the one and only person who can see what's happening, he's just the one and only person who's career at Nebraska is on the line. We all know what needs to be done.

The kicking game had been awful - not just the kicker. The kicks, the holds, the low kicks, the shanked kicks - all of it suck.

The punt team is now officially terrible - 2 blocked punts in a season is bad. 2 in a game - great onfield adjustment coach.

By the way - are we allowed to block punts or just the other team? Has this coach schemed one up in 2 years?

Also last week we caught zero punts in the air. The other team managed to do it multiple times. How many times did we start a drive inside the 5 because we can’t field a punt?

Our kick returner averaged 14 yards per kick return last week - pathetic.

The blocking schemes on our kick and punt returns are complete garbage. Tacklers running free at our return men is the norm.

The coach should be gone. Period. We piss away points and field position every week. It’s not a coincidence, it’s just shitty coaching.

1 blocked punt in 2023. 3 blocked field goals in 2023. I don't recall if there were any others. I thought we deflected a punt earlier this season but not locating it so might be wrong on that.

We did block a field goal against Colorado this year.

I don’t think you’re the right fit for this board.

Sit back, pour a drink and watch a winning season for the first time in 7 years.

When you have accompanied as much as Redli has in life - you get license to spout passive aggressive nonsense in perpetuity. I’ve never seen anyone truly take advantage of it like he has - but it’s his right I suppose.

My problem with the blocked punts is, isn't Schiano known for this kind of stuff on special teams? Read where they had the most blocked punts in the country 2022 & 2023 combined. How are you not even remotely ready for this? Then to allow it twice? Wtf?
