Expectations will be improvement, better football, more physicality/toughness and competing till the end of games. However with this fast paced, spread, run pass option and multiple option offense- we can expect to see some things that will happen that we wont be happy with. Part of it is inherent to the system, part of it will be the players acclimating to the new system. This is just the way it is- little getting around it.

Turnovers
There will be a lot more of them. Think back to Martinez and Armstrong days. While we ran sweep read and power read plays that Frost doesnt run- there is a lot of ball handling involved in zone read, speed option and run pass option- pull/keeps. The QB has pre snap reads 2-3 post snap reads, RBs that arent used to option pull/give/pitch and an offensive line that is spotty at best.

Receivers are getting used to a new QB- think of how many option routes we have had that went for interceptions the last couple of years due to QB/Receiver not being on same page. More possessions mean more opportunities to turn the ball over. Hopefully our QB will not be as careless with the ball as TM- no one ran higher or more awkward into contact than TM- Taylor Martinez aka turnover machine- but expect more turnovers.

Motion and Illegal Formation Penalties

Frost likes shifts and motions to gain leverage and numbers advantages for his offense. He also likes to set up non tendency plays. You have to always have 7 on the line and with motions and shifts and all the formations Frost likes to throw at people- NU isn't going to always align properly. Heck we couldn't even align properly this year when we just lined up and threw it.

Delay of Game. Breaking the "Huddle" with 12 and Untimely Timeouts
Okay we saw this under Solich, Callahan (thank you pro play calling system that had 12 word play calls) , Pelini and Riley. While Frost is a master play caller and likes to go fast- the speed requires substitutions on the fly. NU will have issues with having the right 11 on the field all the time.

Blowouts- Lead Giveaways
Frost's wide open offense will score quickly and with the turnovers and the up and down nature of implementing a totally new system- the offense is going to score in spurts. NU may get out in front by 21 early only to lose the game. This team while talented in some areas, it is still grossly weak in several spots. We will see improvement, but this is a 4 win team that has been getting bullied and blown out by anyone with a pulse.

At the end of the day, we should see a marked improvement in the culture and this teams physicality. We will have a reason to hope by seeing improvement I firmly believe we will see a competitive team that is legitimately vying for championships in year 5. But until then- we can expect to see the above happen in this first year. I expect to see a 6-6 season with a possible Bowl win- 7-6, 2019- 8-5 or 9-4 depending on Bowl Match and 10 wins in 2020

So basically, everything we witnessed this year, in year 3 of Mike Riley.

Cisar is sooooo annoying! But I like this post.

Well, given our experience with new coaches in the last 15 or so years, I think we have it down pat about what to expect and when we should see improvement. But thanks for the detailed post.

Agree. The OP would make sense if davecisar never watched Nebraska football last year. IMO a "hiccup" means a "step back" or worse than the prior year. IMO it's going to be extreemly difficult to have "hiccups" next year.

Lets start with Turnover- If we are worse off in 2018 on fumbles lost, that will be ok. In all honesty, the one thing the 2017 huskers did well at was holding on to the football. NU only had 2 fumbles lost in 2017. That's actually remarkable considering how awful the team played in so many areas and how soft they played. If your saying you expect interception to go up, your crazy. NU (Tanner) was one of the worst in throwing picks. Huskers finished in 6th place tie for 74th in the nation at turnovers and considering how great we were at fumbles lost, INT needs to go way down.

Penalties - Huskers were 96th in the Nation in fewest penalties yards (or 33rd in the nation at most penalty yards - which ever way your brain sees it). 76th in fewest penalties per game. In other words, that's awful. Only tOSU was worse in the B1G. I am sure certain types of penalties will go up but as a whole, it won't take much for them to go down. We were absolutely awful.

Lead giveaways - You had me at lead. Maybe the best moment in 2017's football season was Aaron Williams' pick six against Wisky that tied the game @ 17. For a moment, all of husker nation had hope in our hearts. We all told ourselves after that play, "we can do this. Come on guys, we got this" but we didn't have this. Wisky went on to thump us on a 6 minute all running drive and they never looked back. But for a split second we thought we could hang and as bad as things are, being competitive is a step in the right direction. So again, we'd have to have a lead to give it away and to have a lead is an improvement - not a hiccup.

Blowouts - 5 of our last 7 games in 2017 were blowouts. (Don't kid yourself, Penn State blew us out. We put up a lot of garbage points.) Minnesota blew us out. That should never happen. If 2018 is worse than that I don't... No way in hell 2018 is worse than 2017 in that. Not even with the more difficult schedule. I am willing to wager that.

We were 89th in the nation @ 3rd down conversation &111th in the nation in red zone offense. When you dig into our stats, it's pretty easy to see we have no place to really go but up.

I was at every home game and watched the others

Hiccups mean variations from the expected result
In Frosts case that is a scoring machine that led the nation in points and won 12 games
This offense will increase the number of fumbles because of all the reads, give takes the scheme requires
While Lee threw a lot of picks
This offense will run 20-30 percent more plays
There are rupo reads that will be wrong and receiver read routes that our quarterback and receiver will be on different pages
Combined fumbles and interception numbers will be higher

The results will vary from Frosts results at cfu and obviously from this years team
