Casey Thompson good to go for Spring ball

Casey just a tiny bit slow in processing. Lots of QBs want to hold out for a second or two more in hopes that the “big play” develops vs just taking the small play they have available.

The O-Line was bad last season but let’s be honest Casey didn’t help them at all. I don’t think that can be fixed. Not at this point in his life. He doesn’t seem to have a mental clock.

I’m team Nebraska obviously so let the best man win the job. I’m just really hoping Sims looks good this spring.

Casey didn’t help them at all? Interesting take on the worst OL in NU history.

Actually, Sims has missed more games due to injuries.
Never was written what his injuries were.just said he was sidelined by injuries but had 7 starts last year..

What I found impressive is as a Freshman passed for 1,881 yards 13 TD’s and rushing for 492 yards and was 3 times ACC rookie of the week.

What was impressive is he came off the bench in 2021 and lead GT beating North Carolina with 240 accounted yards and 4 TD’s..

You left out the 13 INTs to match his 13 TDs. He’s very talented but also very inconsistent. Perhaps a new home will help fix that.

It never mentioned that on the Nebraska football roster page so I never wrote that down…

Hopefully he has matured and Satterfield will help him make better decisions…

I think he's going to be a quality addition. We're very lucky to have him and you can't argue with his measurables. I'm just not ready to plug him in front of Casey, who I believe is a very fine QB that could have an exceptional year behind a decent line.

If the Oline trends up, CT will have the time he needs. I don't think Whipple really wanted his QBs to run with the football. That changes with the new staff. I think Rhule would really like a Tommy Armstrong type of kid.

Whipple running the zone read with Casey was a total waste of downs. He could have added 300 yards on the ground had he wanted to and/or was instructed to.

Whip did not even want to coach but how do you turn down a two year deal, fully guaranteed, at like 950K a year when you know you are only going to be there (most likely) for about 10 months.

That was a no brainer for him.

Haarberg!
My suspicion is that Purdy will get a long look. Very bright kid who processes information quickly. Adequate arm strength when he’s healthy and more athletic than he gets credit for. As usual, the QB competition will be fun to watch. Personally I hope all of the scholarship kids and Synek stay through fall camp.

Processes information quickly? I’m not sure we’ve seen a more lost QB in Lincoln. If HH can’t beat him out this spring he needs to change positions or move on.

He had plenty of opportunities to scramble or throw it away. There was plenty of blame to go around.

When your tackle play is the worst in P5, there aren’t near as many scrambling opportunities as one might think. Should he have scrambled a few more times? Absolutely. But a QB shouldn’t have to bail out his OL multiple times per game.

Whipple wanted Chubba, but I don’t think Chubba wax ready to manage Whipple’s offense. Purdy could benefit most from the coaching change.

What we don't need is a proven QB like CT being unavailable due to chronic injury. NU should be able to win some games with either CT or Sims, but the other QBs' wins are not likely.

I'll rely on Satterfield and Rhule to determine the pecking order of the QBs, but I do think IF you've gonna lead this ballclub you better be able to run a little bit as the QB.

We all know CT can run the ball, he just seems reluctant to do so unless it's the actual play call. He seemed o be effective last year when called upon, I just can't understand why they didn't call for the QB run more often than they did.

I think this all goes along with Satterfield's philosophy of trying to sync up the offensive play calls that don't put one position group (i.e) the offensive line in a position to do something that is really difficult to do considering the play call.

There will be plenty of time for all of us to criticize the play calls, but so far what Satterfield has said makes a lot of sense given the O Line's difficulties over the last few years. I expect to see a much more mobile offensive line than we've had in the last few years.

Even huddling up seems like a novel concept after the last few years. Hopefully, that cuts down on the illegal procedure, jumping offsides, and other issues that have plagued the offense. It could be the beginning of actually playing and not beating yourself with stupid mistakes. We shall see.
thanks for the info on what Satterfield has said (i haven't been keeping up)

I'm all for the huddle up..

I should have worded what I said a little better. To me, CT is a more accurate passer. He's really good at putting the ball where it needs to be. Hopefully he would be the same - post injury. But he's small (comparitively) and isn't too durable.

Sims on the other hand has the size and a strong arm. I don't think he's as accurate, but his frame suggests he should be more durable. He got injured too the prior year, so it's anyone's guess as to what will happen.

I wish we had another 3rd option here for spring ball.

His second real opportunity to play more than a couple of snaps he looked pretty damned good before he got injured. His brother was picked by the Niners because of his intelligence and ability to process information quickly. Whipple had made similar comments about Chubba. He doesn’t have a gun for an arm but in the right offense with an average O line he could win games for us. Frost put him in horrible situations the first few times we saw him play.

Casey’ injuries had nothing to do with his size, which is usually the case in football. Casey is not a skinny little human. He’s actually pretty jacked. And despite his bigger frame, Sims has missed more games to injury than Casey the past two years.

I don’t think Chubba played until Oklahoma so it would have been difficult for Frost to put him in those horrible situations. Whipple was the OC & QB coach so it’s all on him.

He's short for a QB.. whether his size contributed to his injury or not, I don't know, (and neither do you) but I'm inclined to believe that a 5-10 guy, even 'jacked' as you say, isn't going to be able to take the same abuse as a 6-4 guy in the same physical shape... CT certainly puts in the time at the gym, it's of no fault of his own that he's a shorter guy.

True, Sims has missed a lot of games too.

I'd like to see us get a 3rd guy in here after spring ball, because there isn't anyone else on the roster that I feel is capable, and we will probably end up having to play both CT and Sims.

Casey is not 5’10”. I do agree that both Casey and Sims will play and a lot of that will be by design.

Even Rhule has commented on his great Casey is at anticipating & his accurately throwing. Etc.. cracks me up when we had a run only 1st type in AM. We all complained & Casey looks to have been coached to read & find back type check downs & we all complain cause he barely had even 2.5 or 3 seconds to do that. Slow processing is way off, he is actually really good at reading defenses & anticipating. Might be his best asset!

Adrian was not a run first QB. The rest of your post is pretty much spot on.

he's a lot closer to 5'10 than to the 'claimed' 6-1.

Brent Banks is 6-7. Top of his head is higher than the bottom of Banks’ nose.

He may not be 6’1 but he is def taller than 5’10. I would say 6’0 to 6’.05 is prob closer to what he is. Regardless, he wasn’t to tallest in the room last year so height or weight hasn’t stopped him from being best in the room.🤔🤔

I specifically remember you claiming before last season that Chubba was the real locker room leader and would eventually beat out CT as the starter. @king_kong_ and I disagreed. Did we change course on that?

nobody's listed heights are legit.

I was just showing visually that maybe his size indeed could contribute to his injury, as someone else says couldn't be the case.

I really did think Chubba was going to pan out and be a better leader. All the pre-talk around CT led me to believe he was not the right guy for the job.

He's got some abilities, but I still don't like his leadership.. he's still about as fake as it gets when being interviewed, so that's what I base my thoughts on. We were horrible last year. Blame whomever you want to.. but I don't think that highly of him as a QB.

I won’t blame the QB as we also saw our non-leader 4 year losing starter go to K-state and play a big part in winning a conference title. Casey is better than that guy

I don’t see a stiff qb competition this spring with coach rhule saying CT will be very limited. Quite frankly he said he won’t be able to do much and they are hoping he might be able to throw a little.

the competition will be for 3rd team

I agree - Sims will take all the 1st team live fire reps (Rhule said the word of the spring is "physical") while CT continues to recover

Fall practice is where the QB competition will heat up and my bet is we won't know who's starting until we take the field in MN

Bump. I remember hearing all about Purdy's leadership traits (witnessed while holding a helmet at FSU) and his great haircut. What happened? Did he get a bad haircut in the off-season?

What would have made him less fake in interviews? He was well spoken whenever he was interviewed, and also complimentary of others. What should he have done differently?

I don’t know why it amazes me how you double down so much. I shouldn’t be surprised because you do it all the time. When you believe something to be true nothing will change your mind, because you are the smartest person in the room.
