Can we please not crucify Tommy for 1 pick.

Had you told me before the game, he'd go 20-34, for 377, 3TDs and 1 INT, I would have probably would have asked what drugs are you on. Was the INT bone headed? Yep. He also made some pretty damn good throws. He's the best Nebraska has right now.

Alright OP, you're not even trying to objectively assess the guy's play. It's one thing to defend a player from unnecessary criticism, and I'm all for that. It's another to keep acting as if there is nothing to criticize.

Mr Lemming. I believe I'm on record saying it was a awful pass. Just saying there is more to worry about than Tommy. Our punter for instance.

You are saying he needs to run the table and throw 35 TD's and 0 picks. Now I get it. My bad.

What does last year have to do with today. Bla bla bla

What? If you don't understand how the context of how his history of throwing mind-numbingly dumb INTs in high volume doesn't factor into why people are upset about todays mind-numbingly dumb INT, then we should stop having a discussion and just agree to disagree.

And again, if it was a pick that wasn't so absolutely terrible, then it isn't that big of a deal. But the pick itself was terrible. Interceptions are going to happen. But the ones where he throws it directly to the defender, in the redzone, when he could have easily thrown it out of bounds have to stop. They are egregious and will cost us games if they keep happening.

Tommy get the focus for a bad pick. 377 and 3 TD's. Pretty easy to defend. Several of you seem to think it's still last year. Let's let it play out. How does that sound?

Let's agree to disagree. He played a great game. 377 and 3 TD's. 1 bad decision that was verified with no hypothetical situations some use. 377 and 3 TDs a very good game.

Yes it was a dumb INT. Don't assume however that this dumb INT is a predictor for how Armstrong will play for the whole year. He had 16 interceptions last year with 4 coming against Iowa and 3 against Miami. Half of his interceptions almost came from those two games. Today Tommy had to throw a lot against Wyoming because of how they were selling out against the run and he made some great throws.

I think that he should get the benefit of the doubt as to his improvement over last year in terms of decision making. One bad pass doesn't negate the improvement that hopefully Tommy has made.

Let's not forget the almost pick 6 that was dropped. It's not like he made one bad play. He made one horrifically bad play that cost us 7 and he made a few other bad plays that we got lucky that didn't burn us.

I think people were hoping for the 'new and improved Armstrong.' Every year we hear about how he learned to use his check downs or that he learned to throw it away or that he learned to minimize turnovers. That pick just showed that he is the same old up and down, hot and cold, unpredictable QB. Peoples hopes were dashed by that pick. And that is why they are so upset about one throw.
Exactly, people forget. These first 2 games were against HORRIBLE teams. So Tommys mistakes don't seem as bad because these opponents don't make the int, don't make the sack, don't cause the fumble, don't break up the horrible pass, They make his issues look small. It isn't about 1 pick, its about issues he continues having, its about the consistent poor decision making at the perfectly wrong time. Mistakes at this stage in his career he shouldn't be making over and over and over.

Why should he get the benefit of the doubt? I did not see a lot of improvement in this game over what he did last year. Yes, his numbers, on paper were good. But watch him. Watch his footwork. He consistently abandons his technique and throws off his back foot or without stepping into his throw. I just don't see the improvement.

Yes he had one pick. It was ugly. And he threw another ball that should have been a pick. Just because it wasn't doesn't make it not a poor throw.

Hey, I really hope I'm wrong and this is a one off and we never see it again. I hope Armstrong succeeds. I'm a Nebraska fan and I root for him. But I'll believe it when I see it.

The coaches have him rolling out now instead of trying to make him a pocket passer. They are playing to Armstrong's strengths instead of trying to make a square peg fit into a round hole. I think that he will have a better year at QB with just that one change because he will have the option to run if the pass isn't there.

Tommy is basically the definition of a "YOLO" QB. He's going to take chances, he's going to make some great throws and then there will be some awful head-scratching ones. You'll be much less frustrated once you accept that that's who he is. Plus when he throws the "500" balls, you can have some fun and scream out "YOLO" to lessen the disappointment if it does get picked. Offense becomes way more entertaining. :)

Totally agree he is fun to watch.

You seem to think its Tommy VS the entire D. O line played average at best. Lots of pressure. Knevel beat on blindside a few times bad.

Where are you getting that? Talk about deflection. The topic in this thread is Armstrong. Read the title of the thread.

If you want to discuss all the issues or all the pros if the game, I am more than happy to.

I'm just stating facts. He has thrown off his back foot a few times, but hard to get settled when they blitz and bring tons of pressure. Tommy does what he does. The facts speak for themselves. Without any hypothetical arguments he threw for 377 yards and 3 TD's. He had one bad throw verified through a interception.

Well you see OP, you are arguing with armchair QBs whos only real experience is playing madden.

This isn't a clear cut deal where he's either "great" or "terrible". It's always going to be a mix of the two. When he threw that pick the first words out of my mouth were "classic Armstrong!" So yeah, bad decision. It's concerning when we've seen so much of that in the past. At this point, he's a senior and we know what we've got. He's probably going to throw some picks this year, hopefully it's less than what it has been. There's no one even close to pushing him for the spot, and I for one will take the good that I saw today and live with the rest. Also, he's been a warrior for the team we all love. Can't we just say "good game" once in awhile? In my lifetime, other than the qb's that won national championships, I don't think very many guys who were starters really left Lincoln feeling the love. We expect a level of perfection that not many ever reach.

Enjoy the ride!

My point exactly in my post. Thank you for your thoughts.

Jammal Lord says hi!

J Lord is an apt comparison. The QB recruiting in the Pelini Era was spotty. Inherited Ganz and Lee, Tmart was probably recruited to be a safety (and might still be playing at that psn), and then there's Tommy. The backup this year is a walkon. Lords backup was Joe D. I think Ryker is the better of the backups.

What hypothetical arguments am I bringing to the table? I'm confused.

Jamal Lord lol. Jamal was a Option Quarterback that should have played safety as well. Tommy is not that guy. I am not sure Jamal had 377 in his career let alone one game. Haha

He also had at least 2 passes that he threw back across the field while scrambling in a differenct direction. That is a recipe for disaster against teams with a defensive pulse......

He also ran for a touchdown to go with his 377 and 3 TD's. Just the facts.

No. He only had one factual bad throw because it was a pick. Facts.

I almost forgot. He was screwed on Riley's catch too. Borderline hypothetical but it was a catch. I am now saying he threw for 400 plus.

What????? Are you drunk? You quoted my post and said that you're just stating facts and no hypotheticals. Who else would you be talking to? Who is saying the hypotheticals?
Who? Several posts here stating he should have or could have thrown other interceptions. Don't take it so hard dude. I'm just trying to stick to the facts. 377 3 TD's and one rush TD. Not a bad game.

Alright fellas. Let's call it a night. I respect your opinions. Let's cut the kid some slack at least for today. 377 with 3 TD's and a rush TD is a good game on any planet. One bad pick. Easy to scrutinize. I just don't see what that accomplishes. Let get ready for the ducks!!
