Butler DC

Diversity hire count? Lol. NFL teams don't give a shit about diversity hires. Butler clearly wasn't thought highly of. Hopefully he proves everyone wrong.

Doesn't come across as warm and fuzzy? Doesn't interview well? Have you ever heard Bill Belichick talk?

He dropped down to college to get his shot. Hope he proves he can be a good DC here.

Seriously Bill was exactly who I thought about as I was typing that. Have you listened to him when he's breaking stuff down on TV. He's very good verbally in those situations. His press conferences were a different setting. He's an extremely bright guy who can communicate very effectively. I don't know if Butler has those same communication skills for the gm of NFL teams. That doesn't mean that he can't call a game as a DC.

You think the NFL never considers race when they're hiring? LOL. They have the Rooney rule for heaven's sake.
The Rooney rule is optics. If diversity is such a big deal why does everyone keep hiring young, white OC's as HC? The Bears are going to try to do the same (probably unsuccessfuly).

I agree that they skirt the rule on their head coaches. People are clearly conscious of it but in fact the guy who got the DC job Butler wanted was a young white guy with family ties to the franchise. Why not other NFL franchises? Who knows. Relationships mean a lot in the NFL and he doesn't seem like a guy who has a long list of buddies texting him every day. Kind of what i meant by not warm and fuzzy.

We really won’t know if it’s a terrible hire until next year. And I don’t think the guy we had running the D this year was all that great.

I would much rather have a proven guy like Jim Leonhard. Just have to see how it plays out.
Yeah that's where I am. This hire will make or break Rhule, in how it affects the defense will determine team outcome. As I don't think Dana stays around long either. Just have to see how it plays out.

I don't disagree with either of you. I watched the soft zone coverage and the inconstant coverage and tackling wondering wtf was going on.

But why let White go if you don't have a home run waiting in the wings? It makes my brain hurt.

Wasn’t the talk at the time or rumors or expectations that Butler would be DC when White left at the time he was hired? While I am underwhelmed with the promotion. I feel like this was the plan the whole time. Everyone knew white was going to leave at some point. There has been talks for 2 seasons and it happened.

We have two coordinators that sport mullets. This can only be seen as a positive for us. What are the odds we can get Coach Rhule to grow out that skullet?

Did they “let white go?” Or was White going no matter what? I don’t get the sense st all that they let him go. He was already going no matter what.

The NFL is a meritocracy. Success breeds success. Ben Johnson is going to get a job, because, Detroit Lions. So is Aaron Glenn (black guy, cough, cough)

Raheem Morris got a second crack at it. Not gonna work out until he gets a good quarterback under center. Mike Tomlin is the longest tenured coach in the NFL. Todd Bowls is a good coach. Demeco Ryan is a good up and coming coach.

I don’t think Bellicek gives a shit about questions from sports reporters and goes to no lengths to hide that fact.

This was obviously the plan when he was brought in to coach DBs, but it has turned pessimistic quick with how the room turned out this year. Safeties were out of position and slow to react, he matched up 5’6 corners against 6’5 receivers, he played injured players, and he sat our best corner on the bench for half the season.

The defense was already set to take a step back next year but this guy gives me zero confidence he can do anything correctly.

Quite something for people to get their nose put out of joint by something that was in the works all season.
We still see that. We also see White took a lateral move to leave due to it. "Hey Tony my buddy needs a job. Giving him the DBs and he's allowed to dial up the coverages even tho you are calling in the plays. Oh, and he's probably gonna have your job next season, so go ahead and start looking around"

Dana has to be wondering wtf he got himself into.

White had a 3 year deal here originally, they restructured it last year giving him a raise, but the expiration date remained unchanged.
So he had one year left and was losing Ty and Nash. He got 3 year’s guaranteed and got to move to Florida close to family. No state income tax either. That saves him 100k in tax alone.

Also, Pelini had already worn out his welcome as a coach at any level, by the time he was Butler's age.
I’ve been surprised he hasn’t gone back to the NFL to start over. He’s a much better fit there. I guess it would be beneath him to take a position coach job and he probably has lived conservatively enough to retire on what he made.

Let's be honest, he's a strange dude. It's really pretty amazing that he landed the Nebraska job with his credentials.

Not quite as amazing when you realize he was thought highly of and considered a young, innovative defense mind. Then he came in and proved it by having a 215 lb LB move to DE on passing downs. He must be quite comfortable to not have taken another coaching job though.

No question, it wasn't a dig at him at all. But I still think the reason he's not coaching is because long ago the general consensus became that no AD anywhere wanted to deal with his personality. He'd hate dealing with the portal and NIL anyway.

The thing that gets me is Rhule put the interim tag on him. Then stated in his presser that there was lots of interest in the job. Didn't want to change the defense. Then turned around and said it wouldn't be a splash hire.

Either there wasn't that much interest or they wanted to change the defense and told Rhule to kick rocks.

Well he was right about one thing, no splash. More like a dribble or a droplet.
My guess. Rhule wants to pretty much be heavily involved in the defense now that he has been pushed out of the offense.

Our best hope is that with Phil Snow and Rhule they can "teach" Butler how to be good. Which is still pretty gross all things considering.

I'm guessing big DCs wanted the DH deal where Rhule would stay out of it.

I guess that’s plausible, but not the only possible way you can spin this. The reality is, unless someone talks, none of us really knows how all this went down.

The hosts and guests all made the same point on 590 this morning. The only thing odd about his original hire was the timing. Most would have thought it was great if we had hired away Butler from Buffalo in January before he quit them. Rhule has worked with him for 5 months and obviously thinks he and Snow are our best option right now. It’s a crappy situation with the portal timing and playoffs. White and Piss Roast really stabbed us in the back.

Maybe if he's in charge of the overall defense we will have a secondary coach who doesn't fall in love with the Giffords and the Singletons and the injured Hill who were injured or vastly underperformed and will actually play the best players.

With his fingerprints on the overall defense, position coaches will all be playing their best kids.

He would have to go back the the NFL as a position coach and some of those guys are making 7 figures now.
