Butler DC

Damn. Lots of haters. Dude got here a month before the season, in a scheme he wasn’t familiar with. Did the best with what he had imo. Can’t turn Issac Gifford into prince amukamara. Also, statistically, the secondary was better in 24’ compared to 23’.
I don't see how the secondary was better this year. It was obvious when watching games that they had taken a step back.

People out here in PA are laughing at this hire. He was defensive coordinator at PSU in 2012 and they were awful. It was a post Sandusky sanction team but he didn’t do much to make the best of what he had. A wretched PSU defense that year.
60th in stats with a sub-death penalty reduction in scholarships.

Thinking about it, if you are a top DC candidate, do you take a job with a potentially lame duck head coach and get jettisoned when said head coach is canned and a new HC brings in his own guys? Not saying this is actually the case, but does make you wonder….

John Butler is gonna be the DC as one true insider not on this board stated that Butler is gonna be the DC and could be named officially as early as this week. This dude was also right about Holgerson and was spot on to the timeline when of it was made official.

Butler has chops as he's been DC before in the college ranks and was part of an NFL coaching staff that boasted the top defense in the NFL all 5 years he was there and knew every aspect of that defense plus his secondary all 5 years was the top one and allowed the fewest passing yards all 5 years he was there. His secondary was made up of the creme del a creme db's.

That insider was absolutely correct and look at what time I posted this!

Time for you whiney crying ass lil biotches to start crying about it! Boo hoo hoo!

By the way this post was made in off season losers!

"insider" who said TW wasn't leaving this season?

He was also brought in to take over DC whenever White decides to leave which won't be this off season and I for one like White.

Again, not defending the hire, but if you want to give an opinion at least back it up with verifiable and accurate facts.

I don't care about the people in Pennsylvania. Additionally, Butler was a DB coach in 2012, the DC in 2013.

These are the sanctions that were put in place in July 2012.

$60 million fine. The NCAA imposes a $60 million fine, equivalent to the approximate average of one year's gross revenues from the Penn State football program, to be paid over a five-year period beginning in 2012 into an endowment for programs preventing child sexual abuse and/or assisting the victims of child sexual abuse. The minimum annual payment will be $12 million until the $60 million is paid. The proceeds of this fine may not be used to fund programs at the University. No current sponsored athletic team may be reduced or eliminated in order to fund this fine.

Four-year postseason ban. The NCAA imposes a four-year postseason ban on participation in postseason play in the sport of football, beginning with the 2012-2013 academic year and expiring at the conclusion of the 2015-2016 academic year. Therefore, the University's football team shall end its 2012 season and each season through 2015 with the playing if its last regularly scheduled, in-season contest and shall not be eligible to participate in any postseason competition, including a conference championship, any bowl game, or any postseason playoff competition.

Four-year reduction of grants-in-aid. For a period of four years commencing with the 2013-2014 academic year and expiring at the conclusion of the 2016-2017 academic year, the NCAA imposes a limit of 15 initial grants-in-aid (from a maximum of 25 allowed) and for a period of four years commencing with the 2014-2015 academic year and expiring at the conclusion of the 2017-2018 academic year a limit of 65 total grants-in-aid (from a maximum of 85 allowed) for football during each of those specified years. In the event the total number of grants-in-aid drops below 65, the University may award grants-in-aid to non-scholarship student-athletes who have been members of the football program as allowed under Bylaw 15.5.6.3.6.

Five years of probation. The NCAA imposes this period of probation, which will include the appointment of an on-campus, independent Integrity Monitor and periodic reporting as detailed in the Corrective Component of this Consent Decree. Failure to comply with the Consent Decree during this probationary period may result in additional, more severe sanctions.

Vacation of wins since 1998. The NCAA vacates all wins of the Penn State football team from 1998 to 2011. The career record of Coach “Joe” Paterno will reflect the vacated records.

Waiver of transfer rules and grant-in-aid retention. Any entering or returning football student-athlete will be allowed to immediately transfer and will be eligible to immediately compete at the transfer institution, provided he is otherwise eligible. Any football student-athlete who wants to remain at the University may retain his athletic grant-in-aid, as long as he meets and maintains applicable academic requirements, regardless of whether he competes on the football team.

Was there much difference. The passing from this years schedule was far inferior.

If you can’t learn to not over pursue and always take bad angles at 23, you’ll never learn.
I questioned Butler's ability to judge talent when he said Gifford was one of the best players in the country.
He wasn't even the best player in the secondary.

It's like saying it was the restaurant manager's fault that the World Trade Center lost money in 2001-02.

in 2013, Butler's defense gave up 63 to Ohio State.

Buffalo, San Diego State, Cal, and Purdue didn't give up that many.

He also let a terrible Michigan team that only put up 13 points against the Huskers score a nice, round 40 on his defense.
Now do Snow

Now do Snow
Hasn’t been a coordinator since ‘22, where he and his team were abysmal

Hasn’t been a college coordinator since 2019

Last worked for the most dysfunctional franchise in all of sports

Pretty on the nose hire

This next year is gonna be a monumental task for who ever would have taken over as DC.

No Ty and Nash in the middle, throw in Jackson-Davis-Tagaloa, as well as the plethora of Edge rushers gone, then add Bullock, Gbayor and Thompson, and then include Gifford, Tommi and Singleton off the defense.

That is a gazillion snaps by a relatively experienced defense. Of course we have people that can step in and play, so does every other team in the country.

Being DC for NU next year is gonna be so open to criticism. It would have been nice if the DC/DL/OLB coaches had been able to bring in 6-8 proven players from their previous stops.

Yes it was 2013 not 2012. And in 2012 he coached the secondary and it was pretty good. But the bottom fell out the next year. But I did mention in my post that these were the sanction years. I don’t know why you are implying I overlooked that fact when I explicitly mentioned it. Maybe you are just trying to underscore how severe the sanctions were. No need. Everyone is aware how draconian they were.

Still, PSU went 7-5 in 2013 and the offense carried the team. It wasn’t a horrible talentless team. They damn near beat us and we squeezed out a 23-20 win. But the defense blew chunks. Disorganized and poorly coached. Probably why when OBrien brought Butler with him to the Texans it was as DB coach and not coordinator.

Like with Satterfield before him, this would be another one we’d hope works out but would know probably won’t. People will rationalize his past mediocrity or failure and say something along the lines that this time it will be different for him.

It’s been a long time since NU has good coordinators on both sides of the ball. We seem to always get one and screw up the other.

What are you talking about? My point was to refute The post that says he was the coach at Penn St post- sanctions. That wasn’t the case. He was hit with them in year one and year 2.

Well he also hired Romeo Crennel as DC who was a pretty successful at that position over the years.

He sure was.
But my larger point is we need home run hires desperately right now. These are not home run hires (other than Simpson who I like). Holgorsen was a home run hire. We needed one on defense too. And in my view, we didn’t get it.

Crazy that the offensive minded HC had a team that the offense carried the team. I bet you’re going to tell me that Nebraska under Pelini was carried by the defense.

Don’t like the hire but now that we know he better find away to stop BC offensive attack.
The thing that's good is NU is going into the game with an experienced roster.
The defense has lost some kids, but there's a strong nucleus returning for the bowl to test whether O'Brien can out scheme Butler or make better in game adjustments because I think its agreed that BOB is a very good playcaller.

Even though I'm not a fan of the Butler promotion, I still say the defense will be a monumental task.
I think the defense will be good enough to win if the offense finally gets off their ass and does their part. A lot of focus on the defense when it's been the offense that has sucked balls for years. Butler is basically going to run what we saw this year and it'll be good enough to win games.

Yeah, that'll totally be on Butler. Not the fact that the majority of the 2-deep on defense either are seniors or hitting the portal.
Ok, it may not be on Butler considering the experience leaving and the guys hitting the portal.

I would be upset with Rhule as the DC and assistant hires needed to be guys who could 1) bring current players with them or 2) recruit their asses off in the transfer portal to fill these gaps. From what I see, Snow and Butler won't help us with #1 or #2, so I am disappointed with Rhule for this hire. Would love to be wrong
