Butler DC

Really disappointed in this one. He has very little DC experience, and his one year doing it at Penn State was terrible, albeit with a decimated team but still.

We should be a program that hires a DC with an established history of success. Not where someone gets a second chance or gets their start coordinating.

Hopefully he proves me wrong, but I have to admit my expectations are insanely low.
Were you a Pelini fan. He had I think 2 years of experience as a position coach when we hired him.

The thing that gets me is Rhule put the interim tag on him. Then stated in his presser that there was lots of interest in the job. Didn't want to change the defense. Then turned around and said it wouldn't be a splash hire.

Either there wasn't that much interest or they wanted to change the defense and told Rhule to kick rocks.

Well he was right about one thing, no splash. More like a dribble or a droplet.

The young DCs we were looking at would not have been splash hires. Robinson wasn't leaving Syracuse and nobody was leaving a playoff team. Tony really left us in the lurch leaving right before the portal opened.

He had 3 years each as a position coach with the Niners, Patriots, and Packers. I keep going over this with you and you keep playing dumb about it. Pelini was a rising star when we hired him. He was a db coach in the Super Bowl 2 years after being a hs coach. Not an assistant db coach, the db coach. A far cry from John Butler.

Butler has to be an elite dc, if he is average or just above average shit is going to hit the fan because perception is we could have done better, I don't envy him at all.
A little off target here, but BC was 6-1 at home and 1-4 on the road. Looking at their schedule I would think they won't score more than 21-24 points in the bowl game. As the year went along, they gave up more and more points.
If the weather is really crappy, likely less.

Pelini wasn’t a rising star. He was highly recommended by someone Solich trusted, and the NU AD wasn’t throwing around cash for a coach that he kind of wanted to run out of the building. Butler has been coaching at the college level or NFL since 1995.

I haven't seen a single post of yours that spelled that out. I stand corrected. Still had never coordinated a defense and Butler has. I'm not a Butler fan boy but he's at least as qualified then as Pelini.

Don’t project your own stupidity on to me.

If you’re too much of a coward to throw a prediction out there just say so.
It is always easier to predict gloom and doom that way you can be right if it come to fruition or you can be pleasantly surprised and eat crow if you were wrong. There is nothing brave or valiant about predicting a poor record or predicting that something wont succeed.

That "someone" was Monte Kiffin, maybe the most respected defensive coach in the NFL. Pelini was so widely known that Monte didn't even coach with him and recommended Bo. Bo was an assistant hs coach in 1993. By 2003 he was DC at NU, after 9 years in the NFL. He was indeed a rising star. Money was such a factor that we gave Bo 50% more than Bohl.

Another example of hiring your buddies. I only hope it isn't as poor a decision as it looks. Obviously there was no one who wanted the job. Do we really have such little potential as a program ? Is Nebraska such a bottom-feeder program now that only those coaches needing a little rehabilitation will come here?

Dannon yogurt is just as poor of a hire as he appeared to be when he was hired as Athletic Director ( and as poor as the coaching staff is turning out to be). I am sure other B1G teams are just laughing their asses off at this program.

How are Rhule and Butler buddies. Where did they work together before Nebraska?

I am in a wait and see with Butler. He's not a superstar but he's an average hire. Rhule knows he has to get it together next year.

You’re right, being honest is easy.

Wish many here could say the same, but thank you for carrying the cross of perpetual sprinkles & sunshine for Matt Rhule.

I just can't get over the fact that if he is so good why wouldn't someone give him another DC job? He seems like he really wanted another shot.

Well he's the wrong race to count towards the diversity hire count. He's no longer young and an up and comer. He was attached to Bill O'Brien and his ugly departure from Houston. Who knows. He doesn't come across as a warm and fuzzy guy. Maybe he doesn't interview well. Maybe he's a sh##y coach. It's Rhule's ass and he made the hire. I'm expecting this to be a similar situation to when Carl was Bo's DC. Snow will probably have a huge hand in calling the defense.

Diversity hire count? Lol. NFL teams don't give a shit about diversity hires. Butler clearly wasn't thought highly of. Hopefully he proves everyone wrong.

Doesn't come across as warm and fuzzy? Doesn't interview well? Have you ever heard Bill Belichick talk?

You think the NFL never considers race when they're hiring? LOL. They have the Rooney rule for heaven's sake.
