Bring back option and power running

Wake up we haven't done anything since 2001 these West Coast/ Spread pro style offenses don't work here and never will
do not upset the pass happy skybox crowd. we only won 3 NC's in 4 years with running the ball. it just doesn't work, we are much better off recruiting against everyone else for the pass happy players we will never get. plus if we go 3 and out passing we can leave our defense on the field all game in bad situations..

Yep can't pass block them so keep dropping back. Ran a power play up the middle for 40 yards and have we seen it again uh no

No would not have won more than 5 games this season with the talent he left. Have no clue why Dedrick Young is playing. He has zero explosion for an athlete he was claimed to be.

Well a career .500 coach managed to win more than 5 here so I'd say that statement is false.

Don't be stupid. Young has been playing with an injury most of the season. With Newby out he has to play. Period.

It's important to remember that great old school option coaches are a dying breed. We aren't going to find them at Navy and Air Force. We can find smash mouth football coaches but the glory of the option is a thing of the past.

Option is not a thing of the past we did it before in different formations as well. Zone read is option but we are not built for that. Our line right now is built to run at people period so get back to it

You guys can't see that some of problem is coaching look at Gates getting abused

Zone read is not your typical option. The triple option as you know it is dying with the old school coaches who ran it.

OMG we didn't run the true triple option back in the day and zone read is what read the De and if he collapse keep it and if he doesn't hand it off. That is option. Nebraska used the fullback to lead block and occasionally run the trap very rarely did they run true triple option

So you're saying lead option was a bigger weapon? Obviously no one play made that offense purr but to say the TO was never used is wrong.

There are entire breakdowns of that Nebraska offense on the internet with frame by frame discussions about the triple option. I don't see any reason for the discussion about something an offense very rarely ran. Osborne once said it wasn't triple option based on the call in the huddle, true or not I don't know but you don't have the fullback hitting the A or B gap on an option if he's playing lead blocker. Either way the coaches you're begging for run a true triple option offense which was kind of my point.

You also complained about spread offenses earlier and now you're hailing the zone read?

Not hailing the zone read just stating that it's an option type of play

Yeah it's an option but it's just not played the same way. A speed option out of the gun is about as old school as it gets these days unless you look towards the service academies.

We don't need the option to be successful but I do think we need a physical run focused offense with an efficient passing game. When we're passing the damn football on 3rd and 2 then there is a problem, this isn't the freaking NFL people...

When Mike was hired, we on this very board all agreed that we had enough talent to win right away.

It's not a talent issue, it's a coaching issue.
We were wrong. Bo stopped recruiting for all intents and purposes 3 years before he left.

Bo's recruiting was mediocre, but so far Riley's has not been any better. Right now we are below Iowa State, Rutgers, and Duke.

Quit this bullshit bring back the option crap! We just have to recruit better athletes that fit this system. Good grief man
You are assuming that better athletes will result in a better record and I think you're right. However, i don't think this staff will ever have championship caliber teams, even with better talent. Having said that Riley gets to stay as long as he wants IMO. He's just such a good ambassador for NU football and thats pretty important too.

Yep. There's probably only one person that I can think of that would know how to coach it properly and it's not Paul Johnson.

We have been recruiting better athletes but we are not getting them so get back to option football until we get them

Scheme is hardly the problem. As Bob Devaney once said, " I have yet to see a jockey win a horse race." You gotta have the thoroughbreds to win today. We don't have 'em right now. For that we can thank Mark Pelini.

Maybe we don't have the talent but what we are doing now isn't working either. We can have all the top rated QBs you want but we the line can't block then what difference does it make at least line up go big on big and see what happens

It won't work here.

Running the same 3 running plays is the future of football....lol
Thats cute...you think we used to have three plays in our playbook. You havent got a clue.
Btw i agree we cant go back to option offense. A power run offense, however...

Running the football....don't leave that out. We ran a pro style offense with the addition of the option in 95.

Running the football is more the point. That means practicing running the ball more than passing.
Ok i may have misunderstood a previous post i commented on because this is on point.

We do have some talent problems but you have a group that does nothing but blame the talent then you have the group who only blames the coaches. Neither side budges on what they see as the problem. I think our coaching staff was a poor hire but I'm not sold on that enough to say talent isn't an issue as well. We have some holes to fill but that certainly isn't the answer to all of our problems.
I domt think we have the talent to compete for a B1G championship this year or last year.
I do feel we have the talent to not have lost to purdue and illinois or byu last year, and to not get blown out in the 2nd worse loss in school history or by 30 to 7-4 iowa. Thats middle ground.
We dont have the talent to win championships, but we do have the talent to expect better than the above. I dont think thats a crazy thing to say.

Actually, we should wait at least one more year. That way, we could have 3 years of recruiting drop-back passing QB's. Then, we could fire Riley and bring in an option oriented coach. We'd lose for 2 or 3 more years as we wait for that coach to get his players in place - losing patience as we go. Then, fire the option oriented coach just as we fill the QB depth chart with the next batch of Tommy Armstrong/Taylor Martinez types as we transition back to a passing oriented offense.

UM, PSU, Wisky, tOSU, MSU have brick wall DL's.. Nebraska.. nor any of the teams mentioned will simply overpower a schedule like that via the run. PSU took down OSU and they are not even at full strength.. and Iowa steeled up vs. UM.. you are in a tough league and at least 2/3 teams are going to have more raw talent than Nebraska.. so you need a great coach..

I wanted Air Force's Troy Calhoun when Riley was hired. I like Niumotololo way better Paul Johnson. PJ's defense's at GT have been horrendous.
I agree. Paul Johnson's offense is doing just fine and has proven that the option can still be very effective. Unfortunately his defense is shit. The option is fun to watch, and I wish more teams ran the traditional option.
