Article: Has Texas Tech built a college football power in the portal?

Texas Tech's billionaire booster Cody Campbell helped Texas Tech land one of the top transfer portal classes. "’We are going to have the most talented roster in the conference, and I don't think it's going to even be close,’ Campbell said. ‘We have never, ever been in that position.’”

Has Texas Tech built a college football power in the portal?
Texas A$ M tried this a couple years ago.it didn’t work out so well. We will see .

Yawn. Buying “good” players alone does not guarantee success.
Besides, having the “most talented roster” in that conference is not exactly something to brag about.

But do they have this young lady?

Ohio State tried it last year and won a national championship.
OSU bought a handful of Portal players but the vast majority of their NIL money went to players that they recruited and developed - Sawyer, that JTT, Burke, Henderson and a few others - that were thinking about entering the NFL draft as underclassmen. OSU has typically brought in 5 or 6 Portal players a year

I really believe that trying to completely building a roster on NIL just doesn't work. Just ask TAMU. The foundation has to be there

Yeah Florida State landed about twenty guys from programs like Alabama, Ohio State, Texas , Georgia and Clemson that were seen as big gets. Two wins later coming off a thirteen win season and those big gets got them nowhere.

Even the great Lane Kiffin and his 18 million dollar squad filled with transfers couldn't even get them a playoff bid after the expansion. You have to have the culture, coaching and strong base of homegrown guys in place before bringing in transfers who should be the icing. Ohio State brought in big additions to supplement the few areas they lacked. You don't win 11-12 games a year every year without talent and culture.

Not really apples to apples because aTm didn't do it with the portal. That gazillion dollar #1 class only had 2 portal players in it (out of 32 total).

What's really crazy is that from that vaunted '22 class, there are only 10 players of the 32 still at A$M. Mostly the lowest rated ones. Also of note, both portal players from that class are no longer at TAMU 😳

I don't know anything going on down at A&M but feel that they are probably a lot closer to re-capturing their Manzel-era success than Nebraska is.

Met a guy last week through a friend.. he literally wanted to know what happened to Nebraska.. he was saying all the things we already know about how we used to be.. he wanted an answer to what happened.. I told him 2 things. Tom retired from coaching and then the move to the Big Ten, so we lost our identity in a couple of ways.

Lot of posters on here refuse to see this

Ole Miss should have been a playoff team and they almost got there. They were lacking depth in a few key areas and had some injuries that derailed their season. You're taking away the wrong lessons from that. You still need to spend big to win big, as is clearly evident that the highest payroll team in OSU essentially cruised through the playoffs.

Ohio state had very few portal players yes they spend big but it’s on players they recruit and develop. The point is you are probably not going to have success year in year out by bringing in a ton of portals that have never played with each other or never been coached by the same coaches.

Not just OSU, but if you look at the top recruiting schools - year in and year out - they bring in just a handful of Portal transfers (maybe 6 or 7 at most) to fill just a few weak roster spots. The fans that are acting like huge amount of Portal transfers are some kind of magic are delusional.

If you look at the 2024 Playoff teams - OSU, ND, PSU, Texas, etc.... they build their teams around recruiting and development. Keep in mind, many of these Portal players were in the Portal because they couldn't make it at their previous schools

The point is to bring in stud players no matter where they come from, and compensating them fairly in the process. Ohio State did a better job of this than anyone. They brought in Judkins and Howard from outside. They brought in some stud young guys, particularly Smith. And then they took care of the guys who were already standouts on their roster. The lesson is pay guys their fair value, and they will listen when it comes to recruiting to your roster or keeping them on the roster. I don't think it gets any more common sense than this. And the results were validated when the highest payroll team won the championship.

This is a dumb lesson to take away. The starting QB and RB of the title team were from outside.

and their best player on defense

literally all of ohiost's top guys on their 2024 team were not in columbus in 2023

this is why everyone should just point and laugh at @Big bo fan. nobody's head has ever made it farther up their own ass than he's managed.
