Article: Has Texas Tech built a college football power in the portal?

Texas Tech's billionaire booster Cody Campbell helped Texas Tech land one of the top transfer portal classes. "’We are going to have the most talented roster in the conference, and I don't think it's going to even be close,’ Campbell said. ‘We have never, ever been in that position.’”

Texas A$ M tried this a couple years ago.it didn’t work out so well. We will see .

Yawn. Buying “good” players alone does not guarantee success.
Besides, having the “most talented roster” in that conference is not exactly something to brag about.

But do they have this young lady?

Ohio State tried it last year and won a national championship.
OSU bought a handful of Portal players but the vast majority of their NIL money went to players that they recruited and developed - Sawyer, that JTT, Burke, Henderson and a few others - that were thinking about entering the NFL draft as underclassmen. OSU has typically brought in 5 or 6 Portal players a year

I really believe that trying to completely building a roster on NIL just doesn't work. Just ask TAMU. The foundation has to be there

Yeah Florida State landed about twenty guys from programs like Alabama, Ohio State, Texas , Georgia and Clemson that were seen as big gets. Two wins later coming off a thirteen win season and those big gets got them nowhere.

Even the great Lane Kiffin and his 18 million dollar squad filled with transfers couldn't even get them a playoff bid after the expansion. You have to have the culture, coaching and strong base of homegrown guys in place before bringing in transfers who should be the icing. Ohio State brought in big additions to supplement the few areas they lacked. You don't win 11-12 games a year every year without talent and culture.

Not really apples to apples because aTm didn't do it with the portal. That gazillion dollar #1 class only had 2 portal players in it (out of 32 total).

What's really crazy is that from that vaunted '22 class, there are only 10 players of the 32 still at A$M. Mostly the lowest rated ones. Also of note, both portal players from that class are no longer at TAMU 😳

I don't know anything going on down at A&M but feel that they are probably a lot closer to re-capturing their Manzel-era success than Nebraska is.

Met a guy last week through a friend.. he literally wanted to know what happened to Nebraska.. he was saying all the things we already know about how we used to be.. he wanted an answer to what happened.. I told him 2 things. Tom retired from coaching and then the move to the Big Ten, so we lost our identity in a couple of ways.
