The latest count puts us at 16 scholarship WRs!

While competition will be tight in the spring, several guys won’t be here for spring (5 true frosh?). You assume they have a lock on a roster spot.

That leaves 11 guys competing for possibly only 5-7 spots? Not sure they’d carry more than 10-12 WRs total and about 1/2 will be true frosh.

It’ll be interesting to see who makes the team, but it’s awesome that we can have tryouts for the best talent.

I just hope they all aint getting promised stuff that the coaches wont be able to keep. That was a huge Frost blunder.

Reference back to Dallas last play. Need 9

16 isn't that high really. A couple will leave. Last year NU had like 12 to start the season. Alabama carried 16, Georgia 14.
It may depend on what you got at other positions, but carrying a 4 deep at each position (=12 WRs) would put you 3 over the scholly limit and none for specialists.

We’d be sacrificing somewhere to have less than 4 at some spots.
Recent tradition has shown us that, in the trenches, ILB or DB for example, having barely a two deep with a few 3 deep guys that are either garbage or future projects or injured is not a good recipe.
We also had 5 scholly QBs and only 1 was capable of playing.

Good points

I’d guess Bama/UGA specialists aren’t on scholarship, but don’t know for sure

If the coaches were happy with the receiver room they wouldnt have taken that many. I see a complete rebuild of the receiver room. Last year we had two receivers worth a damn, Palmer and West when he was targeted. We need receivers that can not only run sharp, crisp routes but ones that can block downfield as well.

True, but 3 isn’t very many. Could easily be one or two short on OL, WR or DB where the positions are pretty interchangeable.

This is true but I don't think we will carry the sixteen. But if we have 16 playmakers we will. Otherwise some will leave and those scholarships will go to shore up other areas. Roster management is a continuous thing.

The thing about WR…they aren’t real football players, so the bigger the number, the more dancing and other BS that goes on during Indy.

It’s not an easy group to manage.

Yeah, I’m not complaining about having a tryout for the roster spots. It’s more about where they land in the end and how many you cut to to make room for true frosh that haven’t proven themselves.

Definitely not the easiest group to manage especially for a first year extremely young assistant coaching the position for the first time.

So crazy it just might work. 😂

Either that or they will end up killing Garret McGuire. Probably not. But best to take out a larger life insurance on the coach all the same to be safe

We’d be 5-7 over since we have two or three (LS?) specialists on scholarship and whether we continue with 5 QBs.
I’m not worried about it as long as we don’t sacrifice depth across the positions.

We’ll see where they end up at WR, but the idea was we basically have 5 of pick your# 11? WR spots reserved for true frosh not competing in spring, and 11 guys left competing for possibly only 6 spots on the roster.

Coach McGuire Day 1: “Almost 50% of you won’t be on this team after spring. Now let’s make these practices count!”

Hopefully some of these speedsters will be on ST and cover. Make them a little tougher too. I swear we've had some of the slowest coverage teams the last decade

Is there any chance Lloyd or Turner start on track scholarships? I know they have to move to football scholarships once they get on the field in a game, but that doesn’t seem likely next year.

Good thought- is the defining moment when they see the field or just being on the team?

Definitely looking forward to some serious perimeter blocking.
The old “no block no rock” is now “no block no scholarship spot”

I’m not positive. I think they can be on other scholarships, but must be included in the 85 to play in a game. But that could just be for academic and not dual sport kids.

I think we had 3 WRs on scholarship from last year who will play. The rest may be gonzo

Guess what. Not worried!

Does track have full scholarships? I think football takes precedent when it comes to primary sport numbers scholarship wise

My wife's nephew walked on to be a long snapper at Alabama. He noped out during summer workouts before his first semester even started. It's not just 4/5 star recruits that make Alabama a consistent top team.

The entire mens track and field team gets 12.6 scholarships (that includes cross country runners who also run distance in track) - very few are on full scholarship - most are partials or walk ons

I trust the coaches know more than us. They have a vision. For all we know there is dead wood that needs to be thinned out. They are putting together their vision and I know they know more than me.
Not really setting the bar very high...

He had a problem with Joseph.
I understand that. He also had a problem catching the ball. I can see why Joseph demoted him. The one issue I see with having such a young position coach is that it will be virtually impossible for him to coach guys hard when needed.

You literally saw him for 1 game and a handful of snaps in 3 others where he had a total of 5 targets.

he had two critical drops in a one score loss and we didn't see him much after that. They quit targeting him and he bitched about his touches. Joseph took exception to it is what I've heard and read. He transferred to NU because he wanted to be a #1 WR. From what I've seen I doubt his ability to fill that role. We'll see if a fresh start works for him but I won't be surprised if he's in the portal in May.
