OT - Tariffs

Even though I'll be accused of this, I don't want this to be a political discussion. I'm just curious regarding how this is done and why.

My understanding is that before we imposed the income tax, the US government was funded mainly by tariffs. So a tariff isn't anything new.

My question revolves around the notion of reciprocal tariffs. In what reasonable world would we not tariff another country the same amount that they're imposing on us? Is this some sort of backdoor economic development plan for other countries that's being waged on the backs of people and companies that produce goods for export? Isn't this something that has the potential to be rife with backdoor deals, fraud, and kickbacks to people in the various governments? Is that why this has gone on for so long?

To me, in a perfect world, the countries of the world would agree on one general tariff percentage for all imported products. The proceeds would be used to offset government expenses, lowering taxes for all citizens. I heard one estimate that if there was a general tariff of all products from all countries worldwide of 7%, that this would generate an additional $1 trillion annually to the US coffers and not affect our exporters much different than they're paying overall now.

Aside from that, why wouldn't we have imposed reciprocal tariffs 100 years ago? Is there some reason why our average tariff is 2.3%, but China's is almost 10% and Brazil's is over 13%? And if the answer is because it helps emerging economies, then what does that have to do with China and Brazil? The average rates in the EU are higher than ours (2.85%) but at least they're close.

Spring football

Just a week away and plenty to look forward to, new DL players, new WR room and a new OC calling plays for the entire season and the new ST coach who knows what he's doing. I don't know about the rest of you but I'm excited to see this team play this year under some new position coaches. We have some players who are still rehabbing from surgeries and injuries so some questions will still not be answered until later this summer. One last thing we will find out, will Nebraska add from the portal after spring football is over if the staff deems it necessary.

Football Rhule has "no concerns" at the running back spot behind Emmett Johnson

Emmett Johnson is the leader of the RB room. He'll be expected to run the ball and catch it in Dana Holgorsen's offense.

But behind Emmett? Matt Rhule isn't worried.

"We got guys that we know can play."

Defensive Line 2025

Been reading a bit about how losing Nash, Ty, Butler, and Williams leaves us in a bad spot for 2025. But when was the last time that the 2 deep coming into spring on the 3 man front included two 3 stars, three 4 stars, and 1 five star? I know Van Popple showed really good signs of being a force at NG 2 years ago at Illinois and Lenhardt is a seasoned vet now. Jeudy is an experienced guy in the rotation and Moore/Lefotu/George will likely provide good depth. But I'm really excited about Davis and Nwaneri, and I hear that the coaches are too. These 2 bring a level of athleticism to the DL that's been lacking for many years. No offense, but a million miles from the Ross Dzuriz/Alex Davis days!

P.S. I wouldn't sleep on Terry, Simpson, or Pietrzak either. Still love Pietrzak's Rivals photo!
