Football Analyzing most intriguing depth chart spots, Matt Rhule's injury updates

Broke down the depth chart with @TimVerghese

Kindly ignore the fact that neither of us realized until after recording that the “ORs” are listed by jersey number.

Egg 🤝 Face

OT: Electric Lawn Mower

So while I am back in Florida for the next 6-10 months (going through probate) I am considering getting an electric lawnmower..

What are the general thoughts about them? At home depot they have a ryobi that looks ok along with some others.

Are these things legit?

Can I use it for 6-8 months and will I still be able to sell it on for half price?

I am only considering self propelled.. as I am too old to be pushing the thing lol.

Thanks in advance for any insight based on your experience.

Football Heinrich Haarberg's dynamic skill set valuable for 2024

With Dylan Raiola looking like Nebraska's QB1 in 2024, what about Heinrich Haarberg? The big athlete has a skill set that could still help the offense move the ball. Some thoughts on that this Wednesday morning:

THIS WEEK'S NUMBERS

2 -
Dylan Raiola is expected to start at quarterback against UTEP. If Raiola does start against the Miners, he would join Adrian Martinez (2018) as the only true freshmen quarterbacks to start a season opener in school history.

15 - Nebraska returns the majority of its defensive production from a unit that ranked in the top 15 nationally in rushing defense (8th), total defense (11th) and scoring defense (13th) in 2023

42 - Offensive tackle Bryce Benhart is expected to start at right tackle against UTEP. The start would be the 42nd of Benhart's career and would establish a new record for career starts by a Husker offensive lineman

THE MATCHUP
Nebraska kicks off its 135th season on Saturday when the Cornhuskers begin the 2024 campaign with their first-ever matchup against UTEP. Saturday's season opener at Memorial Stadium will be televised on FOX with radio coverage on the Huskers Radio Network. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.

Nebraska is coming off a 5-7 record in Matt Rhule's first season in 2023. The five wins in Rhule's first season in Lincoln were more than the win total from his first season at Temple and Baylor combined, which is notable considering it took only three years for Rhule to lead both programs to school-record win totals.

The Huskers narrowly missed a bowl game last season, falling one win short of bowl eligibility. Five of Nebraska's seven losses were by three points or in overtime, including four November losses by a total of 16 points. The Huskers return 10 offensive and seven defensive players who started at least six games last season. NU also returns its starting punter and place-kicker.

Nebraska is playing its first game of the season at home for the first time since the 2019 season. The Huskers are also beginning the season with a non-conference opponent for the first time since 2019. Each of the past four seasons, Nebraska began the year by facing a Big Ten opponent either on the road or at a neutral site.

Saturday's opener against UTEP marks the first of four straight home games to begin the season for the Big Red. The five-game homestand is Nebraska's longest season-opening homestand since the 2013 season when the Huskers opened the season with five consecutive home games.

SERIES HISTORY
Saturday's contest will mark the first-ever meeting between the Miners and the Huskers.

NEBRASKA BOASTS 14-3 RECORD IN AUGUST
Saturday's season opener will mark the 18th August game in the history of Nebraska football. The Huskers are playing an August game for the fourth straight season but are looking for their first win in the month since 2019, which is also the last year Nebraska opened a season at home.

- Nebraska is 14-3 all-time in the month of August. NU is a perfect 12-0 against non-conference opponents in the month and is also a perfect 10-0 at Memorial Stadium in August.

- The Huskers have lost their last three August games. Those three losses came by a combined 14 points, with each game on the road or at a neutral site against a Big Ten opponent.

HUSKER HISTORY IN SEASON OPENERS
Nebraska has an impressive history in season openers. The Huskers have won 98 of their 134 season openers, winning their first game 75 percent of the time while posting a 98-31-5 record. NU is opening a season at home for the first time since 2019. Since 1980, Nebraska has lost only twice when playing it season opener at home (1986 and 2015).

- Season Opener Record: 98-31-5 (.750) | At Home: 85-14-3 (.848)
- Biggest Win: 117-0 vs. Kearney State (1917) | Biggest Loss: 0-54 at Minnesota (1943)
- Longest Win Streak: 29 (1986-2014) | Longest Losing Streak: 6 (1942-1947)

- According to research compiled by West Virginia's Mike Montoro, Nebraska's 153 combined offensive line starts ranks as the fifth-most in the country entering the 2024 season. Husker offensive linemen have also combined for 224 career games played, a total that ranked ninth nationally entering the season

- Bryce Benhart, a member of the Outland Trophy watch list, leads the way with 41 career starts, starting 41 of Nebraska's 44 games at right tackle the past four seasons. Benhart's 41 career starts are tied with Jeremiah Sirles for the most starts by an offensive lineman in program history

- Turner Corcoran has started 31 games for the Huskers with 26 starts at left tackle, three starts at left guard and two starts at right tackle. Corcoran had started 30 consecutive games before suffering a season-ending injury against Northwestern last season

- Ben Scott returns for his second season as Nebraska's starting center. A member of the Rimington Trophy watch list, Scott started 11 games for the Huskers last season, and he has made 39 career starts including his three seasons at Arizona State

- Teddy Prochazka has started 11 games for Nebraska, but he will miss the 2024 campaign after suffering an injury during fall camp. The injury marked the third time in four seasons that Prochazka has suffered a season-ending injury.

OT 110 years ago

110 years ago a major conflict was raging on the European continent. It was the first major war since 1815 and was triggered by an assassination of an Austrian Arch-Duke the month prior. Many thought the conflict would have been over rather quickly but it would bog down into stalemate and static trench warfare another 4 years. This war would shape things to come throughout the 20th Century.

Makes me wonder how things might have turned out had Germany won in the first couple of months and captured Paris causing the other powers to sue for peace. Probably would not have given rise to Hitler and the Nazis. Would the US emerged as The Superpower after the Cold War? Would we looking forward to College Soccer instead of Husker Football (frightening thought)??!!

Football Scotty Walden high on QB Raiola, "wild banshees" on special teams and more

UTEP head coach Scotty Walden spoke with the media on Monday. Here are a few Nebraska-related highlights.

Another example of Coach Rhule doing it right.

This appears to be lost on most fans, but if you didn't notice, Nebraska split up their offensive and defensive squads into three groups. Instead of calling the groups 1st team, 2nd team, and 3rd team, they were the BLACK group, red group, and white group. The "black" shirts designated the first team (as it should be), so in one of his pressers, instead of calling it good on good, coach Rhule called it black on black.

Plans for Game One?

What do you guys have going on?

Right now me and some friends are planning to leave Omaha around 8:30am and hit up the bars in Lincoln. Maybe stop by one tailgate.

Each year the Rail Yard has been opened I have noticed less traffic at the bars on O street.

Any of you guys going to Lincoln?

Volleyball Huskers Begin Season at AVCA First Serve Showcase

Huskers Begin Season at AVCA First Serve Showcase
Huskers.com

Nebraska will take part in a primetime season-opening event, the AVCA First Serve Showcase, on Tuesday, August 27 at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Kentucky.

No. 2 Nebraska will play in the first match of the Division I season, taking on No. 9 Kentucky at 6 p.m. (CT). Wisconsin will face Louisville in the second match of the doubleheader. All four teams participating in the AVCA First Serve Showcase are ranked in the Top 10 of the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll. The matches will be televised on ESPN2.

ABOUT THE HUSKERS

- Nebraska finished the 2023 season at 33-2 (19-1 Big Ten) and reached the NCAA Championship match, falling 3-0 to Texas in Tampa, Florida.

- The Huskers won the Big Ten Championship for the first time since 2017, and head coach John Cook was named AVCA National Coach of the Year and Big Ten Coach of the Year.

- With four freshmen in the lineup, the Huskers won their first 27 matches of the season and held the No. 1 ranking from Oct. 23 through the end of the regular season.

- The Huskers, who had no seniors on the roster in 2023, return 10 letterwinners, including every starter.

- Opposite hitter Merritt Beason (first team), libero Lexi Rodriguez (first team), setter Bergen Reilly (second team) and outside hitter Harper Murray (third team) were AVCA All-America selections in 2023.

- Beason was the AVCA North Region Player of the Year, and Murray was both the AVCA North Region and Big Ten Freshman of the Year. Reilly was the Big Ten Setter of the Year, and Rodriguez was the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year for the second time.

- The Huskers bring back 86.5 percent of their kills from 2023, 99.7 percent of their assists, 100 percent of their service aces, 96.2 percent of their digs and 79.4 percent of their blocks.

- Nebraska brought in two new additions via the transfer portal in the offseason in Minnesota outside hitter Taylor Landfair and San Diego middle blocker Leyla Blackwell. Landfair, a 6-5 outside hitter from Plainfield, Illinois, is a senior for the Huskers hut has two years of eligibility remaining after receiving a medical hardship for the 2021 season. Landfair was the Big Ten Player of the Year and an AVCA First Team All-American in 2022 at Minnesota after 4.36 kills per set on .257 hitting with 1.63 digs per set. - Nebraska has two freshmen on the roster who enrolled in January and played during the beach volleyball season. Skyler Pierce is a 6-2 outside hitter from Lenexa, Kansas and Olivia Mauch is a 5-6 libero from Bennington, Nebraska. He is a three-time AVCA National Coach of the Year, earning the prestigious honor in 2000, 2005 and 2023, and an eight-time conference coach of the year, including Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2016, 2017 and 2023.

- In 2023, Cook was voted AVCA National Coach of the Year and Big Ten Coach of the Year after leading a young Nebraska team with no seniors to its first Big Ten title since 2017. The Huskers finished the regular season 28-1 overall, their best regular season record since going 28-1 in 2005. After going 26-6 last year and missing the NCAA regional finals for the first time since 2011, the Huskers started over with a starting lineup featuring four true freshmen and a junior transfer (Beeson). Cook's Huskers won their first 27 matches of the season and held the No. 1 ranking from Oct. 23 through the end of the regular season. Despite having no seniors on the roster for just the second time in Cook's 24 years at Nebraska -- as well as starting a true freshman at setter for only the second time in Cook's tenure -- the Huskers earned the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016 and the sixth time overall under Cook.

- Cook was inducted into the AVCA Hall of Fame in 2017, joining former Husker volleyball coach Terry Pettit in the Hall.

OT: Nebraska Nice

Back from my annual drive from Idaho to my home state and had a few random thoughts.
Thanks so much for those of you who gave me advice years ago on how to cut thru the panhandle to see Scottsbluff and Chimney Rock.

Construction woes. Those are real. I've never seen so much construction on virtually every interstate and highway that I was on. And I was on a lot of them, thru a lot of states. By far the worst was trying to get onto I80 at Ogallala. They were literally moving the cones around while I was trying to find the access ramp. On the way home I drove on NE state highways quite a ways and it was much better.

Now for the good stuff. Scottsbluff National monument. When times short even sitting in the parking lot eating a runza while looking skyward is amazing. Chimney Rock - incredible selection of NE/plains history books. Omaha - yes, the zoo (esp. the aquarium) gets better every year. Lauritzen Gardens for a concert. Forest Lawn Cemetery. Runzas. Off the beaten path - Ravenna and Broken Bow. The Custer County Museum in BB is a gold mine for anyone who had family who homesteaded in BB or were in S. Butcher photos. BB even has a Runzas!!

And finally, "Nebraska Nice" is real. ❤️ I'm guessing that those of you who act like jerks on this board are pretty nice as well. I'm proud to be born in this state and a grad of UNL. Now let's bring in the football season!!! GBR!!
