Press release game story:

LINCOLN, Neb. - The Nebraska volleyball team swept Montana State 25-19, 25-15, 25-10 to cap a perfect weekend at the Husker Invitational in front of 8,456 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.

Nebraska (5-1) hit .400 and held Montana State (1-4) to a .128 hitting percentage. The Huskers had 47 kills to 26 for the Bobcats, and NU served seven aces and allowed just two.

Harper Murray had 11 kills and hit .400 with three aces, six digs and two blocks. Merritt Beason provided eight kills, while Andi Jackson finished with seven kills on .778 hitting.

Rebekah Allick and Taylor Landfair each had six kills, and Lindsay Krause added five kills while hitting .417.

Bergen Reilly had 37 assists and eight digs, and Lexi Rodriguez also had eight digs. Olivia Mauch chipped in five digs.

Set 1: Although Nebraska led throughout set one, Montana State kept it close, getting within 13-12 and 14-13. A service error by the Bobcats and an ace by Murray made it 16-13, and Jackson and Krause recorded consecutive kills for an 18-14 advantage. MSU answered with a kill and an ace to cut it to 18-16, but a kill by Allick and block by Allick and Murray helped NU stay on top, 21-17. An ace by Beason earned set point at 24-19, and the Huskers won 25-19.

Set 2: Nebraska got off to a 5-1 start with kills by Beason, Krause and Allick and a block by Allick and Murray. NU pushed its lead to 18-7 after a 7-0 run on Reilly's serve. Krause and Allick each had kills in that span, and MSU committed four hitting errors. The Huskers finished off a 25-15 victory with three kills by Jackson down the stretch and a kill and ace by Landfair. Nebraska held Montana State to .067 hitting in the second set.

Set 3: Nebraska jumped out to a 13-3 start and never looked back, cruising to a 25-10 win and the sweep. Maisie Boesiger subbed in, and on her birthday served a 7-0 run. Murray and Rodriguez each served aces in the set, and Landfair and Murray combined for 10 kills to help the Huskers close out their 27th straight win at home.

Daily Nebraska Trivia/Fact: September 7-8

“When Colorado visits Memorial Stadium in Lincoln tonight, it will be the 73rd football game between the Buffaloes and Cornhuskers. The first year these two schools played a college football game against one another came all the way back in 1898. Nebraska won that game, 23-10, then won 5 of the first 6 matchups (including three shutouts) between the two programs from 1898-1907.”

Wholeeeee lotta history! Tonight should be fun. Getting closer…

Crazy MLB 2024

1. No one is running away with anything. It looks more and more like any of the 12 teams who make the playoffs will have almost an equal chance to go all the way.

2. The Braves have lost to injury, Acuna (last year's MVP), 2023 All Stars Riley, Albies, and Strider. 2022 Rookie of the Year Harris for about 1/3 of the season, and Minter, and they still have an 80% chance of making the playoffs. BTW Chris Sale will likely win the Cy Young.

3. The White Sox are epically bad, could be the worst record in the modern era before it's over.

4. Finally, last year's World Champion, the Rangers, are hopelessly out of contention, 11 games below .500.

Colorado's Offensive Line..

Imo, a lot of attention is being focused on Shadeur, Hunter, Horn, and the rest of those wideouts. Hell, I don't blame everyone. Those players are elite. I might even be one of the few Husker fans who thinks Shedeur is the best QB in college football. Nobody should be surprised why they're garnering so much attention.

But, College football is still a big boy Sport. And it's won and lost up front. You can go back and look at every single playoff team from the playoff era, and they all had experienced offensive lines. For every dynamic skill player lining up for Georgia or Bama, they also had a plethora of Sunday dudes, with extensive starting experience up front.

Following that train of thought, let's consider what CU is bringing to Lincoln on Saturday:

LT - 1 career start, will play 1st road game, and 1st career FBS or Power 4 opponent.

LG- 25 career starts, 24 at UTEP, will play only 4th career game vs Power 4 opponent.

C- 4 career starts. Ironically will be his 3rd career road game. All vs Power 4 opponents.

RG - 13 career starts, 12 at Indiana as a Right Tackle. 10 starts vs Power 4 opponents.

RT- 13 career starts, 12 at Jackson State. 0 career starts vs FBS or Power 4 opponents.

Let's recap:

- 56 total combined starts.
- 17 total combined starts vs Power 5/4 competition.
- 9 total combined starts on the road vs Power 5/4 competition.

That CU offensive line is coached by Phil Loadholt. This is his first Offensive Line coaching gig.

It seems difficult to imagine that group is going to hold up.

FWIW

Nebraska's Defensive line and linebackers have 104 combined starts.

Any long travelers for the Buff hunt?

I am so bummed that I will not be in Lincoln on Saturday night!

I was fired from career position, at 55, for not taking the vax, moved to panhandle Florida for political cover, and love it here, but never really recovered financially as cost of living here is high. (Dear Facebook lol)

I was planning on being at the game and I am so bummed as plans did not work out. I am still sitting at the office today doing the math if I leave right after work, drive 18 hours overnight, can I make some tailgate and the game? Have to leave right after the game to head home and get a little rest in Mizzou Sunday AM.

Will there be tickets outside less than $500?

Am I crazy?

I think this game is the game where our beloved state, Team, and Brand, start their return to the rightful place among CFB Bluebloods! College football will be whole and right again after tomorrow!! lol

I hope to be in tears of joy about 10 pm Saturday night!!

Who is traveling the furthest for the game tomorrow? Roll Call?

Tomorrow...

Provides a catharsis that has been 23 years in the making. Against the team that started all of this misery and pain. Hope everyone is ready for the relief and happiness that we're about to experience.

Nebraska is going to beat the brakes off the Buffaloes tomorrow and return to its rightful place in college football.

It happens tomorrow. This game means everything for the coaches, the players and the fan base.

Can't wait...

Aaron Murray - Raiola Breakdown

Many apologies as I cannot post the link to Aaron’s analysis of DR on YouTube. As someone who is not a football expert nor able to watch the game, I appreciated the insight from a former QB.

He breaks down most of the pass plays from play concepts, pre-snap checks, route running, decision making and execution.

He gives DR a b-minus overall. Disappointed with the receivers specifically in their route speed/execution. Called them slow and very average. DR missed some opportunities, of course. Also was confused on the some of the pass play concepts that he said made no sense.

Anyhow, it was a bit sobering. If anyone has watched this analysis, I would be interested in other’s opinions.

Worst part of stomping Colorado tomorrow

Our fans are going to way over value the win. Colorado's not good, but it's going to be taken as some great victory, when it should be valued about the same as beating Purdue. It's an old rivalry game and I want the win over any others this year, but it has to be taken with some perspective, Colorado is not a good team.

The board will be filled with playoff predictions, when we just simply aren't there yet. I can already see the posts: Raiola for Heisman, Nebraska's chance at the B1G title, Can Nebraska get a home game in the playoffs, etc.

The Colorado win needs to happen and will happen, but that just puts us on track for an 8-4 or 9-3 season. We are building and going the right way, but Colorado is not a hump game to being a great team, it's a small bump on the way to being a good team.

But that's the way fans are. We are either trash or a title contender. Just a warning for what's to come as many of my posts will slide to the other side pointing out why we aren't a great team, when my opinion of the team hasn't changed.

Football Denver Post articles on NU vs CU game

How can CU Buffs QB Shedeur Sanders win big at Nebraska? Block Big Red noise, you'll beat Cornhuskers, Steven Montez says
by Sean Keeler, Denver Post

BOULDER - Steven Montez threw up a prayer and turned a Sea of Red into church mice.

"I just remember it being dead quiet in the stadium," Montez, the ex-CU Buffs quarterbacking great told me over the phone Tuesday. "That was the thing that stuck out to me the most."

He remembers Laviska Shenault, the Travis Hunter before Travis Hunter. He remembers Viska hifting into fifth gear on a "go" route the last time they played in Lincoln, six Septembers ago, converting a right-shoulder fade into a game-winning TD and a 33-28 Buffs victory.

He remembers Jay MacIntyre getting clobbered on third down to give Montez a second chance at paydirt. He remembers the sweetest silence ever. He remembers talking trash to Nebraska linebacker Dedrick Young II, a pal of teammate and CU lineman Brett Tonz, while sprinting downfield to celebrate.

"What did you say?" I asked.

A pause.

"I don't know if it's appropriate for print," Montez laughed.

"Did Dedrick say anything back?"

"He didn't say a word to me," Montez replied. "I could just tell he was absolutely livid."

Funny thing? Montez considers Young a friend now. Well, except maybe this week. The Color That Shall Not Be Named Week.

"I'd rather be dead," Montez quipped, "than red."

The best grudges never die, do they? Since 1964, CU's played in Lincoln 24 times. They won five of those games. Over the last 60 years, only two Buffs QBs have ever beaten the Big Red twice: Darian Hagan (1989 and 1990) and Montez (2018 and 2019). Shedeur Sanders, whose 1-0 Buffs visit the Huskers on Saturday night, is on the cusp of becoming the third.

"We knew it was going to be loud," Montez recalled of CU's last visit to Lincoln. "But then you get there, and especially the last drive of the game, I couldn't hear when I clapped my hands to get the snap. I just felt my hands touch. I don't know how the center heard me."

"I couldn't hear any of the offensive line communication. It's as if the crowd noise is pouring over your body."

Montez's pro tip for Sanders: When it comes to Big Red Country, it's what you do, not what you say. Because as long as the latter is happening between the hash marks, nobody's going to hear it anyway.

"The secret, first and foremost, I think, (has) got to be dealing with that crowd noise," Montez said. "I've played in a lot of different places -- I've played at (Oregon's) Autzen Stadium. I've played at the Big House (Michigan). Lincoln is, by far, the loudest environment I've played in over my career. So I think if you can deal with the crowd noise, I think you can really have a chance."

And with what he saw of Shedeur and the Buffs against North Dakota State this past Thursday night, he thinks CU really, really, really has a chance.

"The way Travis (Hunter) is playing, the way Shedeur is playing, the way Jimmy Horn Jr. is playing," Montez continued, "if they're able to get those guys the ball, they're going to be tough to stop."

"Even comparing myself and Shedeur, his level of efficiency has surpassed what I put on tape at CU. He's playing some of the best ball that I've ever seen from a CU quarterback in shoot, I don't know how long -- at least since I started watching the Buffs. The way (Sanders) played last year, with the protection he got, it was honestly pretty mind-blowing to see him play that well (while) getting hit that many times, getting sacked that many times."

And that's coming from Montez, who was a darn tough cookie himself. The El Paso, Texas native threw for 63 scores as a Buff from 2016 to 2019, and his 9,710 career yards rank No. 2 on CU's all-time career passing charts behind only Sefo Liufau (9,763).

At 6-foot-5, 230 pounds, Montez, who turned 27 in January, was blessed with a prototype NFL QB body, a strong arm, and an easy, quick release. But the pro game can be a fickle mistress, and after stints with Washington and Detroit in the NFL and the Seattle Sea Dragons of the old XFL, Montez signed with the CFL's Edmonton Elks this past January and was added to the Elks' "retired" list this past May.

This fall, Montez is the QB coach at San Marin High School in Novato, California, having dabbled on the coaching side at this time a year ago.

"It brought me a lot of peace and a lot of fulfillment working with these kids, so I really just wanted to do it again," Montez said. "I had so much fun coaching these kids -- I had a blast last year."

Plenty of tread left on those tires, though.

"I mean, if the situation is right, I feel like I would definitely love to come back and play again," Montez said. "I still feel young, still feel in my prime."

He still loves proving doubters wrong. Still loves being the underdog.

And speaking of, the Huskers are seven-point favorites heading into Saturday night. They were three-point favorites six years ago. Ya never know.

I thought the initial vibe coming into that 2018 game was, they thought we were going to show up and they were going to just roll us or something," Montez recalled. "It felt like all the fans were really confident they were going to beat us that day. And it didn't end up shaking out like that."

Heck, yeah, he misses it. We're all going to miss it.

"Nebraska's not going to renew that contract, are they?" Montez asked me.

"Not anytime soon," I said.

Another pause.

"After going 0-3 (in the first three games)," Montez chuckled, "I wouldn't want to play us, either."
