For any job, the salary usually doesn't reflect anything other than the market value, ie. what someone else is willing to pay. May seem unfair or harsh to many but that's the way it is in a free marketplace. In socialism or communism some bureaucrat establishes a political or perceived societal value for all jobs.
Didn't SMU just come up with $100M to finance the team since they won't be getting ACC TV revenue for some number of years? And I think they did it in like a week! Pretty sure they can come up with a mil here or there for a player they want.

Most average Joes can’t fathom the amount of wealth some people possess. When you start stacking multiple digits in the millions column, life gets fairly easy. I know multiple people with balance sheets in the 100 million plus category. Life is different for them and a million here or there is not a great big deal. Ironically even though they could live lavishly, they don’t. They still have problems though. They still get cancer and deal with family stress and tragedy.
It felt super-weird… can neither confirm nor deny having been at a women’s volleyball game recently (could’ve been Huskers or another collegiate team, can’t remember)… but do DISTINCTLY REMEMBER their home court Emcee Repeatedly and Clearly was asking for donations, given a ‘text to whatever’, specifically for their VB team’s recruitment and retention fund.
It clearly ‘Had Nothing to do with their Athletic Department’, was clearly advertised as being a separate entity, yet with X-thousand fans in attendance, I GUARANTEE they’re rakin’ in cash, every game, with the SPECIFIC INTENT on improving the overall talent level of their squad.
Why the F*CK aren’t we doing this with our football program? If they do, it ain’t visible. They need to put up a huge ad on the ol’ HuskerVision screens saying ‘fed up with what you see? Donate to ‘888-DOSOMETHINGABOUTIT’. Advertise the shit out of it about an hour after the stadium starts serving alcohol, and we’re losing to Iowa at home. Fly around a couple planes with those banners. Would fix shit pretty quickly if every fan in the stadium, and streaming at home, could be pissed off, in live time, and then strategically spoon-fed the opportunity to do something about it. Mildly inebriated would be ideal. Lotsa other programs have figured out that this is a surefire formula to improving talent…

Eh. Its not like people don't know how to pay for better football players. Most people don't care enough to actually donate, or are opposed to donating altogether to player salaries.
Nebraska has spent what, 150 some million on renovations and new athletic buildings, is on tap for 100 million for a coaching staff in the next 5-7 years, and a half a billion for a stadium? And alot of these have huge donation components.
There's money in the system, and probably more to be had, but the people who put out 3/4 of a billion dollars in the past 10 years have specifically chosen to stay out of NIL in a grandiose way although across the AD we're probably more well funded than alot of programs who focus any and all moneys only for football players.
His comments may have been said to give reason for moving on later.

How much does the gov get in private donations? Isn’t that what NIL is? NIL certainly isn’t paid by the school or the government.
It still seems absurd to be talking about paying an 18yo kid 10x the Governor’s salary, to play a game.

Governors always seem to somehow accumulate wealth shortly after they leave office. Pillen isn’t worried about his salary.
It is apples and oranges. A politician is paid for by taxpayers. A college football player is paid for by sponsorships and what money he can accumulate with his name. Completely separate type of job. You are using the same silly argument that people used to make that "teachers should get paid more than athletes." Athletes get paid what the market says they should get paid. If you have a problem with that, don't watch sports and if enough think like you, athletes will make less money. As of now, college football players fill 80,000 seat stadiums and have millions more watch them on tv so companies want to be associated with them.
Yep, if you are a high level politician you too will profit off your name for the rest of your life after leaving office. Politicians are the last people we need to feel sorry for.
They could do more. Other programs are doing a Lot more. Just wish those organizing were better organized and proactive. They should be f’ing desperate.
We don’t really know what or how much they’re doing. It’s against the rules to suggest a payment before a kid transfers and there’s WAY more to a player’s decision than just the money.
We’re NOT paying an 18yo kid 10x the governor’s salary. Private donors may paying a player some amount, it’s sure as hell less than the $11.5m that donors gave Pillen. These are not hard concepts to understand unless you’re yelling at clouds.
I agree, I think they need to put a cap on NIL spending.
To be fair, it’s not like Pillen spent those campaign contributions on lavish vacations. He had a very expensive primary campaign against someone with almost unlimited resources. It’s just the way elections are run now

I do feel for the coach as well. I just feel like paying the players was long overdue.
I don't think paying them is a problem but the way they are doing it is. It's a free for all and guys just going to the highest bidders.
They need to find a way to regulate it somehow or a lot more people will feel as you do.

What was meant to be just some extra chump change for the efforts that players exert on and off the field has become what most figured it would be. Unchecked capitalism running amok. The NCAA new what was coming and basically pulled the trigger and stepped back to watch the carnage. "YOU wanted it now YOU got it! We saw this coming!"
You’re not wrong, Was there just suggesting collectively they could do more. Seems pretty lame, at least for the FB program.
They should be paying these players, as they're very obviously being used by businesses in marketing. The lack of regulation puts us at a permanent disadvantage, UNLESS we adapt to it like most other programs have. Our infrastructure is being stubborn and antiquated and it's putting us behind.

Here’s my problem with you beating this drum. You’ve admitted that you don’t know for sure what we’re doing in regards to NIL but you assume it’s stopping us from landing high profile transfers. The assertion was made that we could have landed a better QB if we had paid more NIL money. I highly doubt that’s the case. Face it, we weren’t an attractive destination for a QB wanting a guaranteed starting position in a winning program. We had a returning starter and were coming off 5 sub . .500 seasons.
NOW, the portal isn’t open so we don’t have any idea what we might be able to give a transfer player but if we don’t fork over 900k to a QB remember it might not be because we didn’t try. The estimated NIL values you read really don’t mean as much as you think.

we're paying our current starting 'quarterback' one-third what the lowest-paid QB is in the top 25. There are SEVERAL teams not part of the 'power' conferences included in that fact.
I don't care how 'NIL valuation' or 'market value' reflects what actually gets into these kids' bank accounts... we're not offering anywhere close to 'market value', at least at that position. You could go thru every position in the depth charts and probably find something similar.

You have continuously beaten a dead horse. Go set the example. Go and make a large donation and earmark for NIL. Be loud and public about it. Once your NIL donation is made challenge everybody else to pony up. If you don't don't take the initiative to make that large donation and set the example you should shut up about how people want to spend there money.

‘Market value’ is the metric being used. Probably the best indicator as IRS filings aren’t evidently in play for documentation. ~$10k. Not a lot. Not wealthy enough to make any measurable ripples.
Missing my point, which is that our program, the NIL initiative that funnels money into the program, has been nearly worthless to our Football program. They’re, by contrast, at least measurably effective in other sports. We are putting exponentially less money into obtaining talented players for FOOTBALL, and folks here either a) don’t understand WHY, and kinda want to know or b) defend the principle of Not paying anyone. Those in the ‘a’ category above should be raising Holy Hell about it, and I plan to continue to. Occasionally. Will try and mix up topics more, for you.
You can be as loud as you want to about it. What are the actual facts of how money is distributed. Show them to me. Do you actually know? Or are you mad that we don't have a million dollar QB and using that as facts? I will be honest. I have zero idea how NIL is ear marked. But I do not donate because I have bigger things in my life to invest in. So tell I'm missing the point all you want. Go offer a huge donation and tell them this will only be ear marked for 5 star talent. Or just continue to spout off about it even though you want others to foot the donations.
Politicians are the most overpaid people in this country. They shouldn't make a penny more than a first-year public school teacher.
