Will the B1G go to Three Permanent Rivals

will the number of permanent rivals vary depending on the institution?
some will have 1 - others 2 and some 3?

Given how the natural rivals fall, it gets hard to put together four pods that are competitively balanced. Maybe one year to year rival, then play 7 teams over two year and the other 7 the following two years. Eight game conference schedule.

Looks like once again Wisconsin would have the easiest path to the conference championship...

Are we sure Alvarez isn't standing in as commissioner???
Purdue has it pretty damn easy. Indiana, Illinois, UCLA.. Yikes. Indiana is another. Purdue-Maryland-MSU.. State of Indy gets the easy road.

Athlons speculates on the subject:

Model one for Nebraska. Ioway USC Minnesota
Model two for Nebraska. Ioway USC Wisconsin
Model three for NU. Ioway UCLA Minnesota
Model four for NU. Ioway UCLA Wisconsin

Games that must be protected:
Illinois/Northwestern
Indiana/ Purdue
Ioway/Wisconsin
Minnesota/ Wisconsin
Ioway/ Minnesota
Michigan/ Michigan St
Michigan/ Ohio St
Nebraska/ Ioway
UCLA/ USC

Personally, I'd rather they go with 4 divisions and 4 teams in each division. Just as an example, I'd like to see Nebraska, USC, UCLA and Iowa in one division. Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Northwestern together. Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana, Purdue, then Ohio State, Maryland, Penn State, Rutgers in the other. Allows you to have divisional champs that can then play semifinal games leading into your conference title game. Can switch on a yearly basis which division champs play in the semi-finals so it's never the same two divisions playing in the same two conference semifinals to add additional crossover possibilities. Team with better overall record gets to host the semifinal game with additional tiebreakers as necessary.

Each division plays their 3 'divisional' games, then you play 4 games against another division and still have 2 protected rivalry games. If one year your divisional pod is scheduled to play a game against the division of a protected rival, you just swap out 'the rivalry' game with a team that the school didn't play the year prior so you're still playing rivalry games but the pod isn't impacted (I hope that makes sense).

On a personal note, I wish Nebraska played USC, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin and UCLA every season. Yes it would be a brutally difficult schedule (and probably never win anything of substance) but god it would be fun to play historic programs every other week.

Nebraska/Iowa doesn't need to be protected (but it probably will be) - before we joined the Big 10, the Hawkeyes were simply the Iowa school we didn't play - we don't have a rivalry in the Big 10 any more than Penn State, Maryland, or Rutgers do.

If there's no rivalry with Iowa then why so much hatred on this board for Iowa? Way more than any other B1G team. :)

Contrary to the majority sentiment in this thread, I think Iowa is the right choice as one of rival teams for Nebraska. Just anecdotally there's more animosity toward Iowa by posters on this board than any other B1G team. That's a sign of rivalry folks.
That's because the dipshits live on here. Nothing more.

Iowa is just blah af. You win, no one cares. You lose you ****ing suck.

Athlons were the ones that said these need to be protected rivalries, this isn’t my own opinion…

But I feel we need to play Ioway and Minnesota every year, not only geographical but Nebraska played these two teams the most in our past history..

Keeping in mind there will be no divisions and the standings will be just 1-16, with the teams with the 2 best records playing in the CCG. There will be 4 scheduling pods and it will be 3-6-6 rotation with protected rivalries. Those rivalries will be a part of the 3 that play each year.

You won’t change the historical rivalries of this conference. I say get over it, that’s the money side of massive conferences. We lost OU as a rival and no one died.

Conf champ games will be interesting. Obviously you always want a chance to play for a conf championship but could see a scenario where a 10-2 team is a big underdog in the conf championship game … loses and forfeits a spot in the college football playoff and another conf 10-2 team that didn’t play in the conf title game gets in

Not a whole lot different from now, except replace the 10-2 team with an 11-1 team.

Would you rather play for a conf title at 10-2 if you were a big underdog where a loss leaves you out of the playoff or pass and get a spot in the playoff?

Obviously I would rather pass an get a spot in the playoffs. Like I said not much different from now where an 11-1 team loses in the CCG and gets left out while another 11-1 team that didn't play for a conference championship gets in. Kind of like Ohio State getting in while USC gets left out.

Without divisions, the top 2 teams are both going to be fairly evenly matched. When you play 9 conference games it is going to be extremely difficult to avoid ALL of the top teams. I’m not sure a team that goes thru the Big Ten with a 10-2 regular season and loses the title game is going to be left out for another team that finished below them or different conference’s team with the same record that didn’t play in a CCG. 12 teams is different than 4.

Maybe it's just because I live in central PA but I wouldn't mind a rivalry with Penn State. Penn State is closer to our level of success (historically) and we'll always have 1982 and 1994 to argue about. Iowa is closer geographically to Nebraska but other than that has just beaten us a lot lately and a lot of trolls. But really who hasn't beaten us a lot lately...

There's a big distance geography wise but if USC and ND can do it could work. We'd still have Iowa as a rival and Penn State would be OSU's second rivalry. Penn State-Michigan State is the other "rivalry" for the Nits (no one really gives a shit about it at least in central PA, lol) I think the fans around here would probably rather play Nebraska than MSU honestly.

When NU first entered the conference I was a big advocate for PSU to be the Black Friday game.

But it was an unpopular opinion.

Basically because of travel purposes..Easier for Penn St to play Michigan St and for Nebraska to play Ioway..

Besides everyone plays that game with in the division except for Indiana/ Purdue and their the reason why we have to have cross over divisional rivalry game..😡

Might be generational. Young people don't seem to care about Iowa. But then again, young people don't seem to care that much about Husker football either, sadly. Hoping Rhule turns that around. By all accounts, he's starting to.

Geography also plays a part in this. Folks living in western Nebraska or eastern Iowa don't seem to care about this game that much. It's bigger for people in eastern NE/western IA.

When Nebraska played Colorado or Oklahoma, the entire state cared. Especially the latter.

Iowa is just not a rival despite their recent success against NU. But again, who hasn't had recent success against NU? I wish the Huskers were more competitive against Wisconsin, because that had a chance to blossom into a natural rivalry. But NU getting repeatedly boatraced by them squashed any chance of a rivalry.

Even Penn St. doesn't have a rivalry in the B1G and they are frequently in the top 10. (Whether they deserve to be or not is a different topic.)

If Nebraska can get good again, there's a chance to develop a rivalry with UCLA since there's a history between the schools. We'll just have to wait and see. However, Nebraska's natural rivalries are obviously in the Big 12 and the SEC.

On 247sports today, they had a round table suggestion of about 4 guys who determined every teams 3 permanent games to play every year…

They took into consideration travel, trophy rivalry games and TV networks wanting certain games they would want to broadcast

They ended up giving Nebraska Ioway, UCLA which mentioned like I have said the Bruins have played Nebraska more than any other Big 10 school.. The final one was Minnesota one mentioned they’ve played for the $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy…

Ioway was given Minnesota and Wisconsin..
Wisconsin was given Minnesota and UCLA..
Michigan was Ohio St, Michigan St, Rutgers
Ohio St was Michigan, Penn St, Illinois

Have also heard of a system of

1 static rival
2 protected rivals that rotate every 4 years
3-6-6 format

This seems the easiest to manage and can be adjusted for competitive balance every four years. Swap Minny for Wisconsin, probably get a four year stretch with tOSU at some point.

Probably because this board is littered with dipshit Iowa fans constantly. Take them away and most people on this board wouldn't give Iowa a second thought.
