The question is kind of pointless but I was just debating with my dad who the better QB was, Armstrong or TMart? My dad says Armstrong. I say TMart. My sister chimed in and said they were equally frustrating in their hot/cold inconsistency.

Thoughts?

Better at what? Pure QB talent? Probably Armstrong.

In terms of production, both were pretty electric on the field, if maddeningly mistake prone. I'm sure T-Magic has more actual production and wins, but I view them as both roughly equivalent all factors considered.

Better question: Where do they rank among all NU quarterbacks?

Sheer numbers say they both produced a ton of yards and played a ton of games, but in terms of where they took the team, I find it hard to believe either are in the top 10.

I don't have much memory before Gill, so pardon if some of the list don't belong or if I'm missing obvious ones who should be here.

Frazier
Gill
Tagge
Ferragamo
Frost
Berringer
Crouch
Gdowski?
Steve Taylor?
Ganz?

Were T Martinez and Armstrong in the class of any of the guys above them?

I think Both Martinez and Armstrong have Ganz by sheer longevity. Ganz didn't play many games.

No

This is what I think. TMart came within a whisker of a Big 12 title and got us to one B1G title game. Of course, his dumb ass interception into the end zone probably cost us that Big 12 title game too. Armstrong? Nada

TMart was never the same after his injury in the Missouri game. Defenses were figuring out how to contain him prior to that, but he was still an explosive running threat which the injury pretty much took away. So, my vote is TMart before the injury, your sister's position afterward.

As for past quarterbacks I think there are too many great ones, playing in different eras to rank them.

But TMart and Armstrong were both four year starters and were of the same era and have similar skill sets. So I thought the debate about those two was interesting.

He was still pretty decent after he recovered from the injury. He ripped off two long distance runs against MSU in 2012 I think that won us that game. And that is why I think he was better than Armstrong. He had a homerun ability with his legs due to his sheer speed and burst that Armstrong lacked. Armstrong had more shake and bake, but he had very few truly long distance runs

You cant compare different eras effectively.

Ferragamo in Riley's offense would have been a freaking star. Ferragamo in option I, would have been a disaster.

Armstrong in Riley's offense was out of place, but imagine he or Martinez running Osborne option offense.

I have always said I think TA would have been truly special in an Osborne option offense. He isn't as fast as TM was pre-injury, but he's instinctive as a runner and I thought he saw the option well when they used to run it. Particularly when he should keep and cut up field.

My top 12 - Most wont know but Dennis Claridge was a big and very athletic QB.
Frazier - Had a lot of talent around him.
Frost - Lots of talent around him
Gill - Defense cost him a NC
Crouch - Least amount of talent around him
Claridge - Athletic with lots of talent around him
Tagge - Like Frazier talent everywhere
Ferragamo - Very talented - makes all the throws
Humm - Limited talent around him
Berringer - Bad luck playing same time as Frazier
Gdowski - Very athletic
Taylor - Athletic
Martinez - Gave NU everything his body possibly could - Never fully recovered from injury

Tom Sorely, Dave Humm

It actually went after Tagge. Dave Humm, Vince the Prince, then Tom Sorely, then Turner Gill, Steve Taylor, Frankie London, Mike Grant who was removed by Tommie Frazier. You know the rest
I actually forgot, before London in 89 was Gerry Gdowski

I would have to agree with your sister . I think TM woulda coulda shoulda, but he never recovered from that injury I believe it was in his sophomore year. Both had a hard time breaking bad throwing form and habits. Tommy ended on a frustrating injury career as well.

I'm calling it a draw.

A healthy TMart-- yes, possibly cracking the top 10 all time. A hobbled TMart? Put him behind Mickey Joseph.

If only Gdowski played 3 of the 4 years instead of just one.

Martinez and Armstrong were lucky to play for 4 years without any competition to challenge them during their careers.

Great list....

Have to go with Armstrong because he was the better playmaker. TM's only attribute was his straight line speed. No elusiveness to avoid the negative play when the OL was impersonating matadors.

Also TA had virtually zero quit and was tough as nails.

Agree. TA personally willed his teams to many wins that TM would never have.

A hobbled TMart was still way better than Mickey Joseph. Even though TMart struggled with passing at times...he was light years ahead of Mickey Joseph.

London ultimately did nothing other than hold.

How easily people forget how good McCant was for one season - all conference ahead of Hagan, who was so dang talented - surprises me.

Gerry Gdowski and Keithen McCant made the most of their one year being the starter. I would have taken either one of them over Armstrong in a heartbeat. Love Armstrong's determination and will to win but Gdowski/McCant were just better players.
