When is it acceptable for Huskers defense to give up 511 yards?

suhnami I get the feeling you don't like the hire, and were just waiting to say "I told you so"....Congrats, you got your chance to celebrate Nebraska losing and so far, after one whole game, it looks like you nailed it. Congrats.

We'll revisit this after a few more games, and preferably recruiting classes, and maybe even a few seasons, are under Riley's belt. I think you'll be proven wrong.

Do you think if we talk about the offense in another thread you'll be able to stay on topic? Or will you bring up how the defense allowed big play after big play and couldn't contain the QB (Hill or the freshman)?
you bring up something here at the end.. we should not have been playing the 'contain' strategy against the freshman qb.. i don't believe he was ever a mobile threat, so a true pass rush should have been the plan with him.

Maybe he's not a mobile threat, but he was able to get away from our guys plenty easy it seemed like multiple times.

The defense played well the 3rd and 4th quarters

They need to play that way all 4.

And that's the advantage of a coaching staff worth the money they are paid. Adjustments were made at half time to fix the deficit in the game plan, in the previous regime the game plan was it and if Wisconsin kept murdering you with off tackle runs, well the scheme was sound and wasn't executed properly.

BYU hasn't been ranked at the end of the year in the AP (just for Tim) top 25 since 2009. Jim McMahon hasn't played quarterback for them for over 30 years.

And what does BYU not being ranked in the top 25 since 2009 have to do with their present ability to beat Nebraska?

I don't remember the last time Minnesota finished ranked in the top 25, and they beat Nebraska the last two years. I'm more pissed off about that then I was about losing to BYU.

Keep trying.

Says the guy who wrote an eternal post about BYU's prowess over the last five years...to which I responded.

completely agree ... the talent and depth in this program is alarmingly shallow
I feel very bad for Riley as he is going to bear the responsibility for the current roster deficiencies that he inherited
Bo needed to go and Eichorst recognized the trajectory of the program but a certain part of me wished Bo was here this year to reap what he sowed
unfortunately too many fans are blindly expecting 9+ wins without any clue about the current talent level in this program

You're wrong.

In fact the talent level is way higher than most people realize. One of the things about the game that impressed me the most was the natural athletic ability of many of our players. Westerkamp's catch and run and for that matter all of his receptions showed amazing athletic talent. Alanzo Moore's catch and run for a touchdown showed amazing natural athletic ability. Tommy Armstrong's play (other than the second quarter) showed a very impressive natural athletic ability. Wilbon displayed great natural athletic skills. Our interior defense line has great natural athletic ability.

Why are we finally seeing the natural athletic abilities of our players for the first time. Because we have a new coaching staff that understands the importance of letting the natural abilities of their players- students shine. An understanding of the importance of that is one of the things that separates good coaches from not so good coaches.

The last three coaches we've had did the exact opposite. They stifled and squashed their players natural abilities with poor coaching, over control and causing the players to be constantly overthinking everything. That's why the teams of the last three coaches always looked gun shy, insecure, unsure, hesitating, confused and on and on.

Riley and co get it. They have emphasized right from the start the need to let the players natural skills come out. FINALLY, a coaching staff that gets it.

You're wrong.

What you touched on was offense, and I couldn't agree more with you about our skill positions, watching each player flourish with their natural ability was very nice to see. However, our OL - where the game of football is won, in the trenches - we have so serious issues. Defensively, we have a walk-on starting DE and a walk-on back-up DE so 2 walk-on DE's in our 2-deep at defensive end. On top of that, we have a redshirt freshmen converted from TE, that's 3 of our 4 DE's, IMO that spells trouble early on in 2015. Honestly, I can't remember the last time we had that...

Do we have some talent on defense? Absolutely, no question about it. But we also have glaring weaknesses and are far from a complete team on either side of the ball because of recruiting a few years back. I was extremely vocal about recruiting on this very forum and although for a period of time I was 110% behind Bo, I was called a hater and he knew a heck of a lot more than me. While that is true, the glaring weaknesses on this time is a direct result of poor recruiting for a number of years. Yes, recruiting had picked up but not at the level needed...

2010 DE class doesn't apply, their five years were up in 2014.

2011 DE class, should be redshirt seniors right now
Carter - JUCO, does not apply

2012 DE class, should be redshirt juniors right now
McMullen - current starter
Moss - couldn't keep his dick in his pants

2013 DE class, should be redshirt sophomores right now
Gregory - does not apply, JUCO, early entree to NFL
Mixon - did not qualify
Natter - still waiting
Suttles - kicked off team

That's as bad as it gets and exactly why we have issues at DE. LB'er, don't even get me started.

Ah hell, since I mentioned it....

June 2010 Nebraska accepted the bid to join the B1G. Since June 2010 here's our LB'er signees.

2011 class
Pirman - released from team by Pelini
Santos - released from team by Riley (although he was committed prior to 6/2010 acceptance)

2012 class
Afalava - kicked off team by Pelini
Anderson - JUCO player with 2 years to play (eligibility gone for 2015)
Brown - kicked off team by Pelini
Rose - starter, still on roster

2013 class
Banderas - starter, still on roster
Love - left team under Pelini
Newby - still on roster

2014 class
Walton - kicked off team by Riley

How in the living &$^$ can you seriously have this problem as a team in the B1G, at Nebraska? I mean seriously...

Wow that is pathetic. You don't realize it is that bad until you actually see it on paper. Insert Facepalm. Thanks for sharing HTO.

But HTO don't you realize that the move to the Big Ten REALLY hurt Pelini and made him have to revamp his defense AKA recruit more linebackers? Whooooooooooooops.

I know... it's hard not to be mad at the former hc. It's like he left the worst part of himself behind. But I figure that if I continue to be upset then that means the guy is still getting to me... even though he's gone. I refuse to let that happen.

So instead I look at the fact that a lot of great football teams have been made up of great players at the skill positions... mixed with average players at the remaining positions. The key to those teams success was that their coaches, "coached up" the average players with an obsession on fundamentals, to a point where they didn't hurt the team. And they coached up the talented players to go from really good players to being great players.

I'm thinking that Riley and co are probably pretty good at that simply because that's the type of teams they had every year at OS. In fact the team they have this year here at Nebraska... would have probably seemed like manna from heaven to them at OS. I continue to believe we have the makings for a really good team... THIS YEAR. I don't predict scores or season records, but I believe that at the end of the season we will be proud of our team. It's been a long time (18 years) since I felt like that.

Ott, Phillips, and Sayles would all be in the two deep, but we needed to save those scholarships for walk-ons who may earn them, duh.

And don't you know how hard it is to recruit linebackers to Nebraska? It's like, really hard. You can't just drive around and pick those guys up you know.

I think you should ask John McEnroe that question, with that Bee-ber pic it's just too hard for anything serious.Laughing

Boy this seems so familiar. Didn't you, or me, or someone compile a list kind of like this pointing out the lack of depth/recruiting failures at DT back in 2012 after Cameron Meredith had to play DT, and we got rolled by Wisky?

Hard to believe, completely failing to adequately stock players at 5 defensive positions in like 4 seasons? Shocking!!

NU gave Bo 7 years, a lot of you have given Riley one game. Now who isn't being realistic here?

What??? You're dreaming up a load of BS.......

Just because some are not enthralled with our new HC & staff doesn't mean that has anything to do with Bo.

I agree entirely here, I am done with all the excuses and justifications on why nu cannot field a decent team. Especially on defense when we see other teams who have not even recruited at our level playing much better defense
After one game. I thought you were just going to let it play out, but you lied. Just like Blo, a huge Hypocrite. Your agenda is showing again.

For the record since you seem to care, note the time stamps

The previous post you reference:

And you could be correct but normally a team even those players not starting are better at something they have been used to for several years.

I do not want to be the guy that seems to be obsessed with this team failing because I want Riley to succeed and I want banker to succeed - So I will just leave it and let the year play out good or bad. I am very concerned about our defense and the philosophy on offense but it is what it is and I will root for these kids and coaches
