What should Nebraska take from the 2 games yesterday?

Bama's D is also very sound decision making.

Georgia and Oklahoma proved a team with good QB play can score on Alabama. Oklahoma's big problem was its inferior D. You can't expect to score 50 points every game, especially when you're playing the big boys. I watched Oklahoma's 59-56 win over West Virginia, and that was one of the worse defensive displays I've ever seen. But for two comical turnovers by West Virginia, they'd have hung 70 on the Sooners. Alabama played sloppy on offense for the last three quarters and still put up 45 points.

I think we should take that we can also get to that level - Clemson is a perfect example
  • In 2008 Clemson and NU were basically equal and both breaking in new head coaches - NU won the bowl game
  • From 2008 to 2011 NU did ok and played in several conference title games but never broke through
  • From 2008 to 2011 Clemson struggled also and despite decent seasons nothing special ending 2011 giving up 70 pts to West Virginia
  • It is here we took separate turns - NU went into the Big10 and Pelini got his ass handed to him and recruiting never improved. Clemson made a change and hired the best co-ordinators money could buy and made a major financial investment in every aspect of the program. Their DC became the top paid DC in CFB
  • From that point NU went down hill and Clemson continually got better
The lesson we should take from this is that we can get there too. Clemson is not some established National power, Dabo is not some magical coach - they had a vision and put that vision into practice. They believed they could get there and took the actions necessary to do so. I think we now have the coach and the leadership from the University to do the same

I look at Clemson and am encouraged

Thanks for this post, I'll stay optimistic.

Yep, nothing is better than vicious big uglies. However, a T. Farley clone at OLB would help boatloads too.

Not sure how feasible this is...but the 1st thing we take is Clemson's DLine, and the 2nd thing we take is Bama's OLine.

As a fan wanting to see Nebraska playing in one of the 2 playoff games, what aspect of Nebraska’s game should be the number one area for development this year based on what we saw in yesterday’s games?

I think it is simple. Get a lot bigger and faster. ND looked so slow against Clemson and OU was big and strong enough to compete against the Tide.

Let kids go one and done to the NFL. Alabama would lose half it’s roster and only replace 25. Recruiting 5* s would be a double edged sword and certainly wouldn’t be a long term roster management strategy.

I think Georgia is right up there now with Bama and Clemson when it comes to pure talent. Ohio St is not too far behind, although their recruiting will drop some as a result of Meyer's departure. Coach Frost just has to keep building brick by brick.

People also forget the phrase “Clemsoning” existed for a reason. Clemson faltered many times before finally getting over the hump.
Their recruiting was also around 14th until 2015, that’s when it took off.

Alabama is no different than we were in the 90's. Their level of play is very similar to where we were. We were able to do it once. At least in theory, we should be able to do it again. And you don't have to go back to the 90's to find a comparison. Our defense in 2009 was just as dominant as any Clemson or Alabama has had recently. I think we're going to have a top offense here very soon. Combine that with an even average defense and we're going to win a lot of games. If we're ever able to get a good offense and defense here in the same year, it might surprise some people just how much success you can have.
