What does Tony White have to change to stop the quick passing game?

Not much you can do other than make sure the back end tackles well and the front 4 can stop the running game. Pass rush is nullified.

Then you need the offense to control clock with their own passing game and run game.

So I think it is more of a game planning issue for both sides of the ball.

This seems to be his Achilles heel. Ideas? He will see it tomorrow. and later in the season.
Don't be overly predictable with the linebackers and safeties so they aren't always vacating spots underneath. Some of this is also a measure of athleticism at those positions. You need LBs that can cover receivers and tackle speed receivers 1-1 in open space. If your DL can handle the inside running game you can put fatser guys at these positions.

Just take the first read away...once you do that it is a disaster for the QB.

LOL. The RPO quick game is a nightmare to defend. That's why Saban hates it so much. It's even difficult at the HS level. Man and man under helps, but you better be able to stop the run game with 5-6 in the box. I think the 33 is a great defense for it, especially in terms of disguising looks but I do agree that sitting in quarters is not going to be very productive on a whole.

Bottom line is you have to have very good cover guys, very good run stopping LBs in the open field, and you need to bank on the offense f'n it up from time to time.

I will say that White's D is not doing itself any favors on the edge with the way the bs end closes down by turning shoulders and collapsing on down blocks. We have been gashed on the cutback because of it. And with the RPO game you lose outside run support on that kind of action. College game is a bitch to defend.

Only correct answer. Come up and jam or at least man up.

Film is out on our base looks and this type of passing will be ordered up until we show signs of stopping it
This is the answer. Get up on the line of scrimmage. Playing 10 yards deep on the receivers is a gift.

And sprinkle in some LB, corner and safety blitzes! More often than not…as most college QBs do not perform well under pressure. 😉. And yes, JAM THOSE DAMN OUTSIDE WRs! 😁

This is where having Javin Wright available again is nice for pass coverage.

Cover 0 with a spy

Rutgers doesn't run a hurry-up offense. Pre-snap disguise with Cover 2 and then set in on Cover 0. Hope like hell your safeties stay disciplined and wrap up.

Sometimes you give up what you are willing to give up.

There is no magic elixir as a DC. If you want to take something, you give something up.

I’ve said before and agree with others, I hate soft coverage. Need to trust your secondary to handle their business. I’ll accept a couple big plays (within reason) if the tradeoff is not allowing dink and dunk for long sustained drives.

I’m not a fan of Hartzog chasing big TEs all over the field. It did not go well, and he wasn’t even keeping up with him on longer crossing routes (Purdue) when the speed advantage should have shown up.

I still think White’s doing a great job overall. It’s difficult to play dominant defense, but some schools who also lack the 5star ringers do figure it out.

You can’t run any one coverage consistently. More zone look with a man to man or the other way around. Just enough to make the QB think. The best thing is to bracket the receiver with a LB dropping underneath in the passing lane.

Too tight of a man to man can be a killer. Our DBs do not seem all that physical to me. If you don’t get the jam quickly you have given the WR a free quick release and the safety is now responsible. Suck the safety up to the slant and the next thing you have is a ball over the top.

Hope for lots of tipped balls.

Play more #15. He looks like our best cover corner.

If he doesn't line up opposite Hill once Hill is back healthy it's a travesty. He's obviously at least the second best CB we have . As a "pure" cover guy he may even be the best. That said these coaches tend to go with guys they trust more.

Our defensive backfield though experienced isn't the most athletic. Think about when Wright came in the game. He stuck out like a sore thumb with his athleticism and ability to stay in the hip of WRs.

If hope like hell they would put him opposite Hill and move Buford back to Safety and Hertzog back to back up. That alone would get us a bit more athletic on the back in. Throw in Buhdda Wright at LB and we all of of sudden have some better coverage guys back there.

I will go to bed praying tonight that they have the common sense to do just what you said. If not for tomorrow, at least during the bye week.

A QB sees that set up, he checks to a run play. You automatically have at minimum 4 less guys close to the LOS. It becomes a numbers game, run a split zone, cut the field in half, seal the backside all day.
Yes but he can disguise it by showing man and single high. It's a game of chess

He did have a sweet pass break up on that tight end though…

I have no idea why they ever moved Buford from safety. Because Hartzog sure as hell isn't one. And I agree with you completely in terms of personnel, might actually be a nasty defense if we get it right.

Run more man and not sit back in quarters 10 yards off the ball.
And get up on the line of scrimmage against the outside receivers.

But then the question is, why don't they? Well, John Butler, DBs coach and passing game coordinator, certainly knows what he is doing. And if you followed the Bills, you would know that they play good defense, especially against the pass. It's just the style of play that they choose to play. "Bend but don't break."

Another quote that comes to mind is "pick your poison". What do you want to give up? Some teams would probably make us pay dearly if we play press coverage on every down. Rutgers probably is not one of them.

They are smartly making a decision to try to do certain things well and then make adjustments as the game goes along.

Just a side note, Max Klare of Purdue is supposedly one of the better up & coming NFL TE prospects for 2026. Probably the best receiving TE we face all year.
