... and it was a damn thing of beauty!
Every year, me and my buddies pick a game and go. We've been to Madison, Lincoln, Columbus, Clemson, Tuscaloosa, Knoxville and last night, South Bend.
Anyway, I'm certainly no fan of the Biting Irish, but wow, did they look incredible. And wow, did USC (especially given all that blue-chip talent) look bad. In fact, they reminded me a LOT of a slightly better version of us.
Back to Notre Dame, I haven't watched them too much over the past few years, but the stuff they're doing this year made me green (pun intended) with envy.
Let's talk about this "running back playing quarterback" - Brandon Wimbush. Many of the guys who watch Tom Brady and Drew Brees throw 40 times a game and think, "that looks easy; we should do that" would think Wimbush sucks. After all, he was only 9-of-19 (less than 50 percent!!!!!!) for 120 yards through the air. I mean, there are people on this board who thinks Jalen Hurts sucks. Ha!
But wow, Wimbush was fun to watch. I don't know what it looked like on TV, but from our seats, it was cool watching this kid break contain and leave the soft "Cali Swag" defenders grasping for air.
Because of his ability to run the ball, everything else opened up. He did miss some WIDE OPEN receivers, which was a little painful to watch, but then he'd come right back and dash around the end for another first down. Of course, his ability to run opened things up for Josh Adams (and vice versa). Man, USC was confused and beaten down.
Wimbush finished with 14 carries for 106 yards. Adams had 19 carries for 191 yards. ND looked great. USC, by contrast did not. Lots of dink and dump, 8-yard outs, blah, blah, blah. No rhythm, no running game, nothing.
I left the stadium shaking my head, just a little sadder about what we've become.
Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen will likely be top 5 NFL draft picks. Wimbush will likely never be drafted, or will have to try to play WR in the league. SO WHAT?
Here's hoping Tanner Lee and the offense finish strong. Truly, I wish for this with all my heart.
But though I've wanted to be on board with this offense, and badly want to be proven wrong, I still see no evidence that we can ever win a conference championship with our current scheme.
