Hopefully whatever consultants he’s bringing in are looking at the entire operation, not just the offense. Change in OC may not be enough to turn this around next year.
It is the elephant in the room that nobody wants to talk about but many players DO need to be accountable. I’ve been saying this for a while.
The last paragraph is a 101 on how to throw your players under the bus.
Edit: here’s the paragraph because it doesn’t show the whole thing on the twitter link.
"This is probably the first time you guys have heard me say: The players have to play. They have to play. They can't just say 'well, did you read what they're saying about Satt?' You are Satt. You are the offense. You're out on the field."
I agree to some extent, however great coaching is that magic wand. Great coaching fixes tons of what you say is wrong. Maybe some of that great coaching is changing players or maybe you make them better. Great coaches don't have these issues this consistently.It is the elephant in the room that nobody wants to talk about but many players DO need to be accountable. I’ve been saying this for a while.
There is a common thread between two coaching regimes and similar outcomes in games. What is that common thread? Some players. Honestly I can’t wait two years from now when some of those players have moved on. When the same players make the same mistakes, same breakdowns, same lack of effort, etc etc…no magic wand can help these players.

All of these points are valid and there are definitely some coaches at Nebraska that don’t have magic wands. My point is there are also some players that just can never be reached.I agree to some extent, however great coaching is that magic wand. Great coaching fixes tons of what you say is wrong. Have you ever worked at a place with some employees that have all the intelligence and credentials but somehow can never deliver the project on time or constantly screw up? That is what is going here in Lincoln.
Rhule said they were evaluating everything. That said, the offense is the most obvious problem. It gets pretty damned tough for your defense when your offense keeps stacking 3 and outs.Hopefully whatever consultants he’s bringing in are looking at the entire operation, not just the offense. True but I understand it is a tightrope because the pressure is to win now.And the point is that those employees that can't be fixed get fired. Or, in this case, the players get benched. That's on the coach
Overall, top to bottom, this is just a bad coaching staff.Rhule said they were evaluating everything. That said, the offense is the most obvious problem. It gets pretty damned tough for your defense when your offense keeps stacking 3 and outs.
I think you are talking about smilin Mike and the rugby tackling deal.Sounds like the time Frost brought in outside consultants to teach tackling because we didn't have anyone on the roster that could wrap up a ball carrier.
The problem isn't every player on the roster.
The problem is, Rhule hired a SHIT coach to run his offense.
That can be fixed. Whether or not Rhule has the nads to do it remains to be seen.
You are correct. It was also related to a study helping to avoid injury / concussions so not totally a bad thing.I think you are talking about smilin Mike and the rugby tackling deal.
I’m not ready to say this is a bad staff top to bottom. There are obvious problems and having to can our DB coach late has really hurt us. The elephant in the room is Satterfield’s failure. IMO you start there and see what happens.Overall, top to bottom, this is just a bad coaching staff.
How hard do we think it would be to replace any, and I mean ANY, coach on this entire staff?
After 1 3/4 seasons, EVERY single coach has been exposed more than once.
The AD can motivate the shit out of the HC, the HC can motivate the shit out of the coordinators and position coaches.
At the end of the day----as a coach, you either have it or you don't.
I think this is pretty accurate. You get to a certain point and you either ARE a good coach or you are not. I know there is experience factors and learning the ropes but this is not rocket science. If you have not "figured it out" at a certain point, you are probably not all of a sudden going to become a great coach.Overall, top to bottom, this is just a bad coaching staff.

Satterfield is the obvious “not a great coordinator” coach. Rhule apparently had to “suggest” to White that we needed to go to 4 man fronts during a game this year but at least I see in game adjustments from him that I believe he’s initiating. The offense has put tremendous pressure on our defense.I think this is pretty accurate. You get to a certain point and you either ARE a good coach or you are not. "Good" coaching staffs don't have teams shoot their wad the first half of the season against 4 out of 6 mostly pud teams, then go backwards the second half of the year for 2 straight years.I’m not ready to say this is a bad staff top to bottom. There are obvious problems and having to can our DB coach late has really hurt us. The elephant in the room is Satterfield’s failure. IMO you start there and see what happens.
Players need to take accountability now also, they're getting to may $$$ to not take on some blame for lack luster performance. Time to earn those dollars!Someone has to be the “fall guy” for players not performing to a standard. All fingers should point to Satt. And if Rhule is the lone guy pointing at the players, he should instead point the thumb back at himself, because he’s next in the chain of command.
Satt as OC---subpar;Satterfield is the obvious “not a great coordinator” coach. I think most if not all of our defensive staff is pretty damned good. The biggest issues I’ve seen there have been individual players blowing assignments. On offense it’s play design at times and play calling. Raiola is shell shocked and looks like a freshman now. That’s Satterfield’s fault.
We played really bad teams until we hit average teams in Illinois and Rutgers and a really good team in Indiana. I expressed concern about both sides of the ball early and often. I don’t think we’ve regressed. I think we are what we are. We actually played very well against a very good OSU team and ran into a WAY under valued UCLA team. UCLA has a legit front 7 on D and their coordinators are very good. We’re a mediocre team with a freshman QB who is banged up and shell shocked."Good" coaching staffs don't have teams shoot their wad the first half of the season against 4 out of 6 mostly pud teams, then go backwards the second half of the year for 2 straight years.
I might be the only guy who likes the job Barthel is doing. As an old RB I see improvement in our backs, their ball security, pass pro and how hard they run. He has a stud high schooler committed right now. I just think our offensive problems start and maybe end with Satterfield. It’s pretty damned tough to accurately assess the position coaches with such incompetent game planning and play calling from your OC. None of the offensive staff has worked with Satt before unless Thomas had a year of overlap sometime.Satt as OC---subpar;
Satt as TE coach---subpar;
McGuire WR coach----subpar;
Barthel RB coach---subpar;
Foley ST coach---subpar.
Some might say Raiola as OL coach----subpar.
That's half the staff. If 1/2 half of your staff is subpar, that's a bad coaching "staff."
Then you combine that with 3 games the defense couldn't get the ball away from the opposing offenses, N Iowa, Illinois, UCLA and there you have it.
Overall, this staff is being outcoached from the jump.I might be the only guy who likes the job Barthel is doing. I guarantee Tom could have won 9-10 games with these assistants. The weak link is Satterfield and unfortunately I don’t think Rhule has ever called plays on offense. Play calling is a unique skill that Satterfield clearly lacks.
