Was it lack of effort?

Since our bowl disaster against a mediocre Tennessee game, I've been thinking about the difference between our offense and our defense that day.

Watching the game multiple times, our offense was overmatched at times in terms of sheer athletic ability. However, I saw no plays where our offensive players didn't show maximum effort.

Our defense, however, was a different story. Sure, we had problems athletically there, too, but much more alarming to me was the BLATANT lack of effort on multiple plays. Rarely have I seen players jogging after ballcarriers, like some of our defensive players did.

This link is the best I could find to illustrate that lack of effort, but it somehow omits the most blatant case of that -Dobbs' first long run, on which a starting linebacker literally jogs after him. For a different example of this, watch starting at the 2:20 mark and notice the two joggers on that particular play.

I think we all know that we need more talent, on both sides of the ball. However, lack of effort can never be tolerated, and when a regular ol' fan like me can see lack of effort, plain as day, on the TV screen, that's really alarming.

I just wonder if that truly lackadaisical effort was what disgusted Riley to the point of making this change.
