Every time we have a possible coaching vacancy, fans start in with the Chip Kelly, Jim Tressel, Bob Stoops, Gary Patterson, John Gruden nonsense. NONE of those coaches are coming to Nebraska. Patterson is the only even remotely possible one in the list, and he's said no to the Huskers at least a hundred times already. We are NOT going to get a coach like that at Nebraska. Why not, you ask? Logic, that's why.
Look at a map of where all the recruits come from in this country. Then put a little star on the major-conference football programs within 200 miles of those recruits. THAT is where these coaches want to go, if anywhere, and that isn't Nebraska. UCLA, USC, Texas, Texas A&M, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State. Why? Because they have the talent, which you need to win.
Look at the current Top 25. All are in the population belts except Mississippi State (#17), Washington State (#18), and Louisville (#19). And there is no secret both Mississippi State and Louisville take certain...uh...LIBERTIES with qualification and discipline issues. On that list, only Washington State and Utah (#23) have situations similar to Nebraska.
A young coach like Scott Frost (or Zac Taylor) might be Nebraska's only real hope, because of a connection to the program. He'd at least give us a sniff where some other young coach (like Major Applewhite) probably would not. And he might actually stick around if he found success. And there's no guarantee Scott would accept an offer even if he got one, because he probably hasn't forgotten the booing, or the previous job snubs, from before.
So Nebraska can offer Scott Frost, or they can get about 15 million people to move to the state so there are actually some recruits. Either way.
