Vacation from NFL

I didn't miss anything, your isolation to this subject speaks for itself. There's just as much "racism and ignorance" from all people of color, not just "white people" in "white America" towards "black people". What happened 100+ years ago has no bearing on my love for all colors, BLACK included. The same goes for the BLACK people in my family - they couldn't care less what happened many years ago.

As far as other races, or nationalities, in my response, I'm not surprised you're baffled as to why they were brought up.

You're part of the problem, not the solution.
This is the silliest thing you have written thus far. My isolation on the subject? What you are saying doesn't make any sense.

What happened 100 plus years ago might not have an impact on how you feel, but how you feel doesn't erase the issues and problems that that still exists today because of what happened 100 plus years ago. It's still happening today. Put your head in the sand and pretend those problems aren't there. Say it enough times and you'll believe it. Since I still recognize the problems and am actually doing something to try to help make it better, I'm part of the problem and not part of the solution. Riiiiiight.

There is just as much racism and ignorance from all people...? cmon man. You do realize that those in the black community who are speaking out, protesting, etc are doing so because they don't feel like their cries aren't being heard or listened to? (again, see Shannon Sharpe, or don't, if you'd rather not understand) People who argue to "bootstrap it up" are missing the whole point. They're not begging for handouts. They're asking to not be treated like 2nd class citizens. And the refusal to see that they still are treated this way, and the negative impact it has had on their ability as a culture to exist alongside the rest of America is why people are protesting. Kaepernick doesn't stand for the anthem because he's standing for American's who are treated as second class citizens but do not have the voice or platform to speak up for themselves.

I don't follow why people seem to think that once slavery was outlawed, suddenly from that day on it was equally awesome to be black or white. Do they just honestly know that little about history that they think it was over in the 1800s? We're not even that far removed from legal, forcible segregation.

I hear that all the time, that angle of, "Get over it." Like it's just done with and everyone magically *loved* black people the day the Civil War was over. You're talking about people who had a pit dug for them for a couple hundred years and for another 100 after that people wanted to kick them right back in there if they managed to climb out. And then we wanna come along today and be like, "Well golly, I don't get what you're doing down there!"

Don't you at some point stop to wonder if you spend long enough systematically screwing with people and trying to undermine them that maybe it might work? Yeah, Italians and Irish got screwed with, too. But they could change their name and look like anyone else and from that point on they were just some other white guy.

You'd not make much on me. No BEARS, no NFL

We're in the Pittsburg coverage area. Great if you're a Steelers fan, I'm not.
Been a BEARS fan since '55. Only TV exception is a BEARS / PACKERS game.

That's a long time. I take it you were in Nebraska in '55. Was your father a Bears fan? Both of my parents were from Wisconsin. However, my father was a Raiders fan and that's who I identified with in the early 70's. My mother liked the Niners. I still dislike SF. Anyways, I appreciate peeps that stick with their teams, through thick and thin.

So how come this racism doesn't effect all black people....let some of you tell it....we are bumbling idiots that have lucked into everything we have...good grief

Do you guys think black people were sitting around playing the fiddle waiting for a savior the past 160 years .....Blacks used to have booming economic communities and strong families and were taking advantage of their new found freedoms even under REAL systematic racism.

Regardless of racism that exists. That has nothing to do with your personal character. Medgar Evers was fighting racism, while sill being a good father to his family. And being a good person in his community

I am personal friends with two black families who are extremely successful. When the plight of black people comes up in conversation, they are quick to point out that a majority of black people have followed the wrong path. Dr. Ben Carson had a good message. His mother taught him to read, dream, and set goals and he was able to accomplish many of them despite his color and history.

The black community today is addicted to free money handouts, and that is the chains and whips that control them today (those are my friends words, not mine). Jewish people have had a little bit of persecution in their lives as well. They put a strong emphasis on the family and education. They make up 10% of the population, but comprise of over 25% of the richest people in the United States. They have several things they can point to historically to say why they cannot make it – but they have adopted a different philosophy.

athletes forget that their fans watch games TO GET AWAY from societal problems---it is a big turnoff to see athletes--especially highly paid ones--take focus away from the game. Not saying they dont have a right to do so, just saying that it is not what their customers came/paid to see.

Unless you are a black fan, and support what they are doing. The NBA has long been considered a "black man's game" and its wildly apparent that what the black portion of the fan base finds tolerable and what the white portion of the fan base finds acceptable are often wildly divergent (this is fairly easily seen in the culture around the NBA and the game of basketball/streetball in general).

Its my general theory that even though blacks probably make up the majority of NFL players (certainly star players), the NFL is such an overwhelmingly QB driven league, and QB's are overwhelmingly white, the NFL has somewhat "hidden" the divergence in opinion between its white and black fan base because it has a white face to put on most of its franchises. In this particular case though, trotting Drew Brees up to the podium isn't going to sooth a lot of the white fan base that is pissed CK chose this forum, nor would it help with blacks who support CK.

I don't understand why athletes think their opinions are so GD important. Your job is to throw a ball for a living. No one gives a crap what you think about societies injustices. Do your job and keep your political opinions to yourself, and if these issues are important to you, how about doing something about it in the community? instead of disrespecting the flag and the people that have given their lives so that you can make millions playing a silly game.

In general, I don't think athletes think their opinion is all that more important than yours or mine. Famous people black and white both do realize that what they say matters more than what you or I would say. So while maybe I think Apartheid was bad and I take up a collection in church for the Mandela foundation and maybe go buy as many copies of Lethal Weapon 2 for my friends as I can afford, it becomes really apparent as a person of power that you have the ability to make something *really* visible should your heart lead you there.

Alot of these comments basically wreak of jealousy to me, that we don't have the same platform to air our views, and that basically no one cares what our view is, accordingly. And perhaps some disappointment that very few other rich people are making the opposite view known, when we can't at that level.

Edit: And its equally annoying to me when folks say something like "I'd never get away with this at work". Let's take our own advice, outcomes are not all equal. If you are unimportant enough to *NOT* get away with airing your feelings at work without much repercussion, work harder and get a job as a bigger fish somewhere else where you can. (Alternatively, find a company that values the thoughts of its Everyday Joe employees). Kind of upsets me too that a 20 year old kid with an arm can make more money than I'll make in my life and be treated like a god after sleepwalking through college, but I'm not going to begrudge them taking advantage of their circumstance because the rest of us are working stiffs with jackass bosses and companies.

I've taken a vacation from the NFL for most of my life. Just never got into it that much. I might watch a game or two over the season and the Super Bowl as well, but that is about it for me. College football is more than adequate for me.

I used to watch a lot more. I catch mostly the night games now.

Born South Sider, Jackson Park Hospital. Stepping into the way back machine, I also liked the Chicago Cardnials. They played At Comiskey Park til 59. Sox Park was closer (Bridgeport) than the Bears...But always a Bears fan. Always a Sox fan also.

So, now you got to finish the story. How'd you come to root for the Huskers?

My dad was transferred to OKC when I was young, no interest in the Sooners.
He was then transferred to Omaha, 1962. The start of that 1st season, the Bobfather, the way they played, they way they carried themselves hooked me. HUSKERS have been my one & only college team since '62.

Life repeats its self, I was asked to take a job & move back to Chicago! I was back in Heaven, Soldier Field, Sox Park. Just like Frank's "My Kind of Town" if your a native, it's in your blood, for good or bad.

Now, retired in WV, I wear different HUSKER gear a couple days a week & always on game day. Folks here seem to like NEBRASKA, want to know about the state & football. Just the opposite when I wear my BEAR gear, no one says or asks about Chicago...just that they would never live there!! :) My Chicago attitude takes over and I'll say, you couldn't make it there anyway...I say it with a smile 'cuz the folks here are nice.
